Falling For The Biker: The Vice President's Girl Chapter 141

Ezra

My feet lead me before I can think. I head straight for the door and sure enough, Mitch stands at our front step.

His hair slicked back, and a hard glare pointed at me.

"Mitch," I breathe, absolutely shocked. "I thought you weren't...wow, it's good to see you."

His lips curl in distaste. "Can't say the same. Where is she?"

"Can we all talk?"

"Can't. I've got Pete in the car, can't leave him out there."

My jaw drops and my eyes widen. "Pete? You brought...Pete? Can I...is he..."

The words die out in my throat, heart pounding against my chest as I stare at the single black car at the end of the driveway.

Pete is here.

It's been years since I saw him, since that night of the accident. I wasn't even allowed at the hospital, and god...I loved him, he was my brother back in Outlaws.

"I just came to see the kid, Ezra. Maybe introduce her to Pete and that's it."

My jaw ticks. "Are you going to take her?"

"Not sure yet," he shrugs. "Look, I'm not here to waste anytime—"

"Let's have a chat inside, I can ask some of the guys to help with Pete, he doesn't have to stay in the car."

Mitch breathes deeply, resigned and then he nods. "Fine."

It's weird, you know? Standing in front of the one person that has hated me his whole life, the one person that has it out for me...and yet, he's not looking at me with that death glare, he's not throttling me.

Maybe we can forgive each other. Maybe we can move past this and have Hannnah in both our lives.

"Okay." I nod. "I'll get some help. Would you like to come in?"

"Pete's in the car."

"Right, I'm sorry." With that, I head back in and all eyes swivel to me as Wren rushes up to me.

"What did he say?" She asks. "What is—"

I cup her jaw. "Breathe, sweetheart."

She exhales shakily and I press a kiss to her forehead before finding Ray in the crowd with my eyes.

"We're gonna need some help. His disabled brother is in the car, so we need both of them in Ray's office."

Ray nods. "Got it. Torch, Kendall and River, please?" They get up immediately. "Mrs Dee, please be on standby just in case."

We all file out, the door wide open and held that way by Wren. Mitch gives us all a once over, clicks his tongue and leads us to the car.

My heart is in my throat as he opens the back seat and then...I see him.

Pete.

He's laying on the seat, blue eyes wide open, staring into nothing. His blonde hair falls over the car seat, and for a second I wonder if Hannah looks like Diane or Pete.

They all have blonde hair and blue eyes.

Mitch grabs a wheel chair from the trunk. "You can grab him, he doesn't have any feeling in his legs so you won't hurt him. But be careful still."

There's a gaping hole in my chest that only spreads wider the more Pete's limbs flop around as we try to take him out.

Sweat beads roll down my neck as I grab onto his upper body, and gently, we're able to place on the wheel chair.

"Pete," I rasp, crouching in front of him.

He just looks at me, nothing in his gaze. His lips are parted, drool sliding out of the corners.

Tears spring to my eyes, and I hold his hands. "I'm so sorry. I haven't visited, I haven't...god, Pete."

And then I feel a twitch of his fingers, and I gasp, loudly. "His fingers," I say to Mitch, "it-it twitched."

"Yea." Mitch nods. "It happens, don't get excited. Let's all head in, please. It's a long drive back out."

But I don't want to stop apologising. I wish my apologies could bring him back, even if just a little bit.

I don't let anyone else near Pete. I roll the wheel chair myself, careful with every little bump or steep path.

Finally, we make our way into the house and up the stairs with Wren, Quincy and Hannah following behind us.

Everyone is quiet, staring at Pete pitifully, helplessly, and I want to punch them. I want to snap. It's rude to stare, they shouldn't look at him like that.

When we're in the confines of Ray's office, I break down. The sobs rip out, because I stare at one of the men I've loved so much and I can't find him.

He's not...he's not in there. Because of me. Because I ruined him, because I clipped the back of his wheel.

It was an accident and yet...yet I wish I didn't leave that accident unscathed.

It should have been me.

Nothing could have prepared me for this, and the guilt that threatens to drown me, doesn't waver. In fact, it only grows.

My chest aches, my whole body trembles. I ignore the stares aimed at me, and I just hold on to Pete's wheel.

"It should've been me," I mutter to him, tear drops dripping onto his jeans. "I'm so sorry, Pete. I really, really, am."

And all he does is blink...at me.

"Hannah, come here," My tone is soft, coaxing the little blonde girl that's hiding behind Wren.

After my episode, everyone gave me some space to recover. I wish I could say that it all changed something, but it didn't.

Hannah shakes her little head, hands gripping tightly onto Wren's clothes.

"It's me, come on, darling," I try again. "You promised you'll meet your dad and uncle."

We all wait patiently, until she finally steps out from behind Wren, and Mitch physically softens. His eyes go big and round, fixed on Hannah as she runs into my arms.

I pick her up. "Good job."

She wipes my still wet cheeks and pouts. "Don't cry again, daddy."

Her words catch me completely off guard and I chuckle at that, the rest joining in.

"So, remember I told you about your real daddy and your uncle?"

"Yes." Her head bobs.

"They're here and they want to meet you."

When I take a step toward Mitch, her grip tightens around my neck but she remains calm. "This is your uncle Mitch."

Mitch swallows, staring, speechless. Then finally he speaks. "H-hey, little...girl."

I snort. "And this is your dad, Pete." She squirms to be put down and I place her down.

"Hi." She smiles at Pete and waves, tilting her neck so she's looking into his eyes.

"Pete, this is Hannah-" I squat, "Diane left her at...at my door step when she was only a few months old. I've b-been looking after her and...and...Hannah?"

"Yes, daddy?"

"Tell Pete how old you are."

"I'm six years old." She holds up six fingers with a smile at him. "And my name is Hannah. I have a cousin, and his name is Noah. And I have aunt Wren, and aunt Beth, and I love to read stories. Do you love to read?"

'He doesn't,' is what I want to respond. Pete has never been a reader, god, he hated any kind of books.

Pete stares at her. He doesn't blink, no, he stares...intently. And that's when I see it.

His eyes shine, they glisten and well up with tears.

My heart jolts. "Pete? Can you...can you hear us? Understand us?"

He doesn't respond, and doesn't take his eyes off Hannah.

"What's going on?" Mitch frowns.

"It's Pete, look–" I point, gossebumps scattering across my flesh, "–he's...he's tearing up."

Everyone gathers and that's when it happens...

A lone tear rolls down his cheeks.
