Wren

"Mhm," Hannah hums with a nod, licking her fingers. "I love it."

My lips twitch. "You do? Really?"

"Yes. Daddy will love it too."

"What am I gonna love?"

Hannah and I shriek, when Ezra's voice comes in from the door. My heart picks up, caught off guard.

"Daddy!" She squeals, stretching her hands to be put down from the island, and I help her, watching her run into his arms.

Hannah and I had woken up some hours ago and when she requested for pancakes, I had to say yes on the condition that she reads the labels for me.

I'd hate to mix up the salt for sugar—almost happened, by the way. Lucky for us, it turned out well.

Ezra strides towards me with Hannah in his arms. "Hey darling." He kisses my forehead, then my lips.

It's a brief kiss but still, it turns my brain to mush.

"Hey," I reply in a whisper, a small smile on my lips.

After last night, Ezra slept off but I couldn't sleep. He and I? We need to talk. Our flight is already scheduled for tomorrow, and now he's refusing to acknowledge that.

"How'd you sleep?" He asks, tucking a hair behind my ear.

I shrug, and pass his plate of pancakes to him. "Fine."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah." I nod.

He gives me a long look, searching my face and then he sighs. "This is about last night, right?"

"We can't do this now," I say. "Let's have breakfast first."

His lips press into a thin line. "Okay."

We settle at the dining table, and Hannah digs in immediately. I thought she'd be missing Noah, Beth and Andrea more than this, but she seems to be content here.

Of course, there's been some days the kids get on a call and Noah begs to come over and 'see Uncle EJ's house', but since we're already leaving to England...

Ezra hasn't said what he'll do with the house. Since it's his, I think it'll just be here for whenever we come back to visit.

"Daddy," Hannah says, taking both of our attention. "Did you know that aunt Wren almost mixed up the sugar?"

My jaw drops. "Hey!"

"Really?" Ezra's eyes widen comically. "Good thing you were there to prevent that, right?"

She nods happily. "I helped."

I pat her head. "You did, baby. But don't throw me under the bus like that next time."

Her giggles get muffled as she continues eating.

It feels so domestic, eating breakfast together with my boyfriend, and his daughter—who could be mine one day.

"Daddy?" Hannah calls again.

I snort, and pinch her cheeks softly. "No talking while eating, sweetheart."

"Oops."

Ezra lays between my thighs, head resting on my chest as I sift my fingers through his hair, enjoying the weight of his body as it sinks me into the sofa.

"Mitch and Pete have gone back," he tells me.

"I'm sorry."

Ezra had gone to the hospital after breakfast. Mitch had called and so he left.

I didn't expect him until evening, and was surprised when his car pulled back into the driveway a few hours later.

"Yeah. He said he'll always call to check up on Hannah because she's better off with us, and maybe one day, he can look at her without feeling a sting of betrayal at Diane...and me."

"You both did what you thought was best," I say. "It wasn't your f–"

"I know." He kisses my chest. "He...he forgave me for Pete's accident. And he thanked me, for taking care of Hannah."

My words get stuck in my throat, and I hug him tighter just as his tears soak through my shirt. But this time, the tears aren't of anguish but of relief, of freedom.

Tears burn the back of my eyes. "He f-forgave you?"

"Yea," he croaks and lifts his watery eyes to mine. "I didn't know, g-god...I didn't know how much I needed to hear that from him. To hear that it's okay, to hear that it's all good. Wren..."

His shoulders shake softly as he hides his face back on my chest. I rub my hands up and down his back, and into his hair.

"I'm so happy, baby. You deserve forgiveness, you deserve to feel free from that guilt...you deserve to live your life without all that baggage."

"I'm so...I feel so much lighter, Wren. God, he even apologized...for my legs. We...we spoke today, I explained everything, and we reached some sort of understanding about it all."

"That's amazing." My smile is watery, excited.

Finally, he can breathe. We can breathe. The relief feels great, yet, something nags at the back of my mind.

"Baby?" I call.

He sniffles and looks up at me. I thumb away his tears with a small smile. "Maybe we should take a page out of Mitch's book," I say, "-and forgive ourselves...for Hayden."

His eyes fall shut, and his chest expands on a deep exhale. When he opens them again, they shine, glimmering with both sadness and longing.

"You're right." He nods with a sigh. "We should, especially if we're going to be starting over. We shouldn't live with all these guilt, all these 'what ifs'."

My heart jolts. "We're still gonna go, right? To England? Tomorrow?"

"We'd have to extend it by two days, but...yeah."

A wide smile spreads across my face, ear splitting. "Okay," I agree.

I couldn't pack because I was skeptical after what he said last night, but now, we have more time on our hands and so many things to put in place.

"We'd never have wanted our baby to die," I say. "And if we could change everything, we would."

He nods. "Yes. We did our best, and we're going to always love him, remember him, and tell his siblings about him."

"And we'll start with telling Hannah."

He freezes. "Are you...are you saying..."

"I love her." She might as well be my daughter...if that's okay, of course."

"Of course, it's okay!" He exclaims, smiling so hard that I can't help but join in. "God, I love you, Wren. I didn't know how much I needed you in my life until you came in."

"I love you. And I love your family, all of them."

"They love you too."

"I'm going to do this right, okay? We'll hold off on telling Hannah, we'd go to England, and we'll settle in...see how life treats us, and I'm going to make it right with you."

I grin. "I wouldn't want it any other way."

"Life's finally looking up," he breathes. "You're perfect, my gorgeous girl."

"And you're perfect for me."

His face dips and he presses his lips to mine. And all I can think in this moment is...finally!

We've gone through so much to get to where we are, and there's no other person I'd have by my side except him.

The kiss is soft, slow, and freeing.

Yes, the pain and the loss is still there. It'll take some time, and it may never truly go away.

But there's no more guilt, no more burdening weight of blaming ourselves.

We're well and truly free, lighter...and ready to start over.

His body settles into mine, his hard length presses into my stomach, and I spread my thighs wider, accommodating him on the narrow sofa.

Quickly, the kiss builds in intensity. My hands slip into his shirt and he groans in my mouth, rocking his hips slightly.

I moan, goosebumps spreading across my skin, and just when I'm about to peel the shirt off his body, I hear it.

Soft footsteps padding down the stairs.

My heart skips and I push Ezra off, hurrying to my feet.

"Baby, wha—"

Hannah comes into view with her pack of colour pens and coloring book. She gasps when she sees Ezra.

"Daddy! You're back!"

Understanding replaces the confusion on Ezra's face, and heat creeps up his cheeks.

When Hannah flings herself into his arms, his sheepish gaze meets mine.

"Thank you," he mouths.

I snort, and break into laughter.

And when I remember that one time where we almost got caught in the kitchen, I laugh harder.

His eyes fill with humour as the embarrassing blush spreads further across his skin. I bet he forgot Hannah was in this house.

Gosh, I'd hate to scar little Hannah like that.
