Falling For The Biker: The Vice President's Girl Chapter 146
Wren
"Aunt Wren," Hannah starts, taking in a deep breath. She looks so nervous, skin flushed and clammy.
My brows pinch in worry. What exactly does she want? I'll give her the world.
I have to say, her nervousness is making me queasy.
"Talk to me, love," I urge softly. "I'll give you anything."
Her eyes go big and round, filling up with tears. "I know that it's my birthday but I want to say thank you for always taking care of me, and playing with me, and tucking me in to sleep even when you were studying for...for..."
"My exams?"
"Y-yes." She nods, and sniffles. "I love you, aunt Wren, and I know I've been slipping and calling you 'mommy', but that's because you're like my mommy and since I don't have one, will you..." she swallows and my heart skips. "Will you please be my mommy, aunt Wren?"
And before I can process, Ezra drops to one knee and holds out an opened box.
My breath hitches.
Th-that's a ring. There's a ring in the box. He's kneeling, he's...oh my god.
"You've been amazing, Wren," he declares almost quietly, "so fucking amazing. To me, to Hannah, to my family, and I can't thank you enough."
A thick lump settles in my throat. "Ezra..."
"I'm so proud of you. I can't imagine how tough it must've been when writing that exam especially with your learning difference, but I'm not surprised you nailed it." He smiles, sweat beads forming on his temples. "You deserve it, my hardworking, smart girl."
I'm shaking, legs trembling. My tongue is tied, my heart is pounding. I know we have an audience, but I don't see them.
I only see my two favorite people. My boyfriend and my...daughter. God, this is real.
"Y-you're proposing."
He nods. "But if you let me get to that, I'll appreciate it. I have a whole bunch of things memorized."
Small, watery laughter breaks past my lips, the same time my eyes fill with tears. "I'm sorry."
"You're fine, darling." His hand trembles slightly, and I only just notice how nervous he is. "I told you I'd marry you. I told you I'd make it right with you. We've been through so much together, yet even with all my baggage, my dirt, you somehow managed to clean me up and still stay."
"I could never leave."
His gaze meets mine. "I'd never let you. I love you so much, Wren. There's no one else I'd want to spend the rest of my life with. Hannah loves you, and I love you. We want you in our lives, permanently, and so this time I'm actually asking...will you marry me, Wren? Please?"
The thing is, Ezra and I have talked about marriage. He's brought it up so many times that his proposal was anticipated.
I'd imagined all the ways he'd do it. I'd imagined the way I'd react, how I'd scream "yes" and jump into his arms, or maybe how I'd be a little more...demure.
But as I stand here, his words playing over and over in my head, and little Hannah staring up at me with both fear and hope...I'm totally speechless.
And so emotional because the tears break free, rolling down my cheeks in waves.
Ezra cracks a tight smile. "Still waiting for your answer, love."
I laugh again, and because the words are finding it hard to come out, I nod eagerly.
He lifts a brow, and my smile widens as I finally speak, "Yes, Ezra, of course I'll marry you."
"Right answer. You got me sweating a bit."
Gently, he slips the dainty diamond ring on my finger and I turn to Hannah, picking her up quickly. "And yes baby, I'll be honored to be your mommy."
She wraps her little hands around my neck and the sound of cheers and claps startles me for a bit.
That's right, everyone is here.
Ezra rises to his feet and holds the hand with my ring, lifting it to his lips as he places a kiss.
"You have no idea how happy you've made me," he rasps, thumbing away my tears gently. "No fucking clue."
And with his fingers pinching my chin, he lifts my face and kisses me. It's slow, and very brief due to Hannah and the audience, but the effect is all the same.
When he breaks away, I can't take my eyes off him. "You're perfect," I murmur. "I want nothing more than to be yours in every sense of the word. I love you."
"My birdie, my pretty girl."
He kisses my forehead and then stares at both of us before kissing Hannah's cheek. "My two girls."
"Thank you for being my mommy...mommy," Hannah says and I, well and truly, melt.
I hug her tighter. "No, thank you for choosing me and trusting me with such a role, sweetheart. I'll be the best mommy I can."
"You already are."
Cue the fresh wave of tears. I shouldn't have done any makeup.
Soon enough, after our little moment, Judi shrieks. "My best friend is a fiancee!!"
A large grin, all teeth, spreads across my face and I lift my hand with the newest and most expensive piece of jewelry.
"I am a fiancee!!"
And the music turns up. Hannah squirms down from my arms, and everyone crowds Ezra and I, congratulating us.
Settling in to London was smooth. It's safe to say we've found our root.
Ezra opened a diner for Andrea and it's been amazing, Hannah's making friends in school, Ezra's bars have been expanding and me...I'm starting nursing school next month.
As everyone dances around us, helping themselves to all the desserts, I take notice for the first time, the relief in my chest.
We still talk about Hayden. His little onesie frame is hung up in our living room, but everyday, the pain lessens.
Slowly, our hearts are healing, and it's beautiful. Perfect.
Ray takes my hand and spins me in time with the music. "I'm so happy for you, Chirp. And so, so proud. You chose yourself, you fought for what you wanted...and that means even though our scum of a father failed, I didn't fail. I did a good job."
"You did." I nod in agreement, smiling. "The perfect role model to look up to. Thank you for taking care of me, for fighting for, and with me. You're the best big brother."
"You're the best little sister. You and Ezra...you were made for each other. Trust me, I might never get used to it, but I approve. One hundred percent."
"That means a whole lot to me. Thank you."
"I love you, Chirp."
"And I love you, Ray."
Ezra sidles up to us. "Can I dance with my fiancee, Ray?"
Raymond laughs. "Oh, you fucker!" Still, he places my hand in Ezra's, winks and walks over to Andrea.
Ezra and I laugh with each other in both surprise and genuine happiness, gratitude.
I place my ring hand on his chest—as he sways us—admiring how beautiful it compliments my skin and how perfect it looks against his chest.
"I'm still in awe," I say. "I didn't expect it today of all days, Hannah's birthday."
"What if I said it was her idea?"
My brows shoot to my hairline. "It was?"
"Mhm, she wanted you to be her mommy as a birthday present. Left to me, I'd have done this earlier."
"You didn't have a ring earlier, Ezra." I snort with a playful eyeroll.
He clicks his tongue. "If you think that I've not had this ring since the moment we moved here, then you don't know me."
"Since we moved?"
"Yes," he confirms. "It's been months since I got it."
I cup his jaw, and with a small smile on my face, I kiss him. Again. And again. "You're incredible."
He pulls away, eyes darkened. "Wanna get out of here? After the birthday?"
"To where?"
"I booked us a hotel to celebrate properly. My mom will take care of Hannah."
"Hm." I bite my lip, thinking. "I didn't pack a change of clothes, though."
He raises an amused brow. "Who says we need any clothes?"
I gasp and slap a hand over his mouth. "Oh my god! Ezra!"
His tongue swipes across my palm and I rip my hand from his mouth, nose scrunched in disgust. "Ew."
He laughs, but sobers quickly. Then he lifts my chin, gives me a small peck.
And with his intense gray eyes pinning me to the spot, he murmurs, "I want to make love to you, all night long, Birdie. I want to be buried so deep inside you, you'd feel me for days. And I want to hear you scream, uninhibited. No Hannah, and no moms."
My stomach dips, core pulsing in anticipation.
He presses his lips to mine, briefly. "What do you say, fiancée?"
I think I'm hypnotized by this man, intoxicated by his words, his scent, his kisses. Because despite the dryness of mouth, and my heavy tongue, I reply,
"Yes, fiancé."
