Wren

My heart drops to my stomach, and a tight smile stretches across my face.

"I will," I reply.

"Go ahead then." He crosses his arms, a brow lifted.

"After the baby shower—"

"Wren," he scoffs. "I'm not stupid. Is there..." he hesitates. "Is there someone else?"

My eyes nearly bulge out of their sockets, pulse thumping. "God, no. There's no one el—"

"I've noticed, you know? These past weeks...I see how you sneak off to answer some goddamn call, I see how guarded you've been around your phone—just...don't lie to me, Wren. Not about this."

I cup his face, whispering. "I promise, baby, I'm not talking to anyone else. There's no one else."

"Then why can't you answer the phone?"

"I'll answer it, but not now."

He searches my eyes for a long beat, and slowly, realization dawns on him. "You know who that is, don't you?"

My hands fall from his face, and my head bows slightly, shoulders sagging.

"Yea." I lick my lips. "I...I know who it is."

I'm tired. So tired of Mitch and these sick games. He knows I'd never hand Ezra over to him. Yet he keeps asking, he keeps threatening, giving deadlines.

But I'm also scared. For Ezra.

He steps away from me, eyes hard. His chest expands on a deep inhale, and he nods, slowly.

"I see."

When I reach for him, he jerks away.

"Ezra..." my voice breaks. "Babe..."

Tears burn the back of my lids, Ezra goes blurry immediately, and his face crumples.

He sighs, pulling me into a hug. "Don't cry, please, baby."

I can't help it, the tears just fall.

"I promise, there's no one—"

"I know, darling. Shush-" small circles rub on my back, soothing me. "But Jesus, Wren, you're killing me here. Something is wrong, and I feel helpless."

When I look up at him, he thumbs my tears away. "I can't tell you, n-not yet."

He pinches his eyes shut, placing a firm kiss on the top of my head.

"Are you pregnant?"

I stiffen, the tears pausing. "W-what?"

"You've been moody, worried," he breathes. "I know we've not been very careful—"

"I'm on the pill, Ezra."

"I know, but it's not guaranteed. You...you asked about kids in the car, and I...I just want you to know that you can tell me if you are, we'll handle Ray together."

I blink. Once. Twice.

And then I burst into laughter. Cheeks stained with tears, yet giggles rip from my throat.

The confused frown on his face only makes this more ridiculous.

"I'm not pregnant, Ezra," I chuckle.

"Why's that so funny?" He grumbles, unimpressed.

I press my lips together, stifling another round of giggles as I wipe my cheeks. "It's not, I just didn't know how to react."

His frown doesn't waver, and I plant a soft kiss on his lips.

"You're sweet," I say. "It's good to know you won't deny me if I get pregnant, but god no, I'm not pregnant."

"Are you sure?" The frown eases.

I nod. "One hundred."

Because I checked. Yes, yes, judge me all you want, but I did check a few weeks earlier when I missed a day of taking the pill.

Safe to say, I was terrified.

"Okay, but—"

The door slams open, and we jerk apart, his words interrupted by Lizzy's entrance.

"Belize!" I squeal, glancing at her blue dress.

She squints at me, groaning. "How did you find out my real name?"

"Your name is pretty!" I hug her. "I wonder why you shortened it. If my name was Belize, I'll scream it everywhere."

She snorts, arms wrapped around me. "I prefer Wren to Belize. Maybe we can exchange names?"

I laugh, pulling out of the hug.

"It's good to see you again, Wren. It's been a hot minute."

Chuckling, I shake my head. "I was there last week! Is someone obsessed with me?"

We both laugh at that, and the she salutes Ezra. "VP!"

He nods. "Hey, Liz. Where are the others?"

The violent rev of bikes answers our question.

Brandon rushes out. "What in the world is going on out there?" He pops the door open.

We all stand at the entrance, staring at the dozens of bikes—some painted with pink, others blue—that flank Ray's Mercedes, and two other cars.

Raymond rarely drives his car, he had to pick it up because Quincy got pregnant.

She isn't any different from Ray. She loved riding on Ray's bike. Even when they're going on dates.

But, we all have to be safe with the baby, so no more bike rides for Quincy until the baby is born.

Ezra steps out as the car comes to a stop, and he holds the door open for Ray. A smile spreads across my face when he dips his head all the way down in an exaggerated bow.

Ray grins like a proud dad, patting Ezra's back and then he opens the door for Quincy.

It's so ridiculous to see all these tattooed, large-muscled men in pink or blue outfits, bikes painted, but it also warms my heart.

This...this is family. And for the first time, I'm glad to be back here.

Asides Ray, Quincy, Ezra and I, every other person is on one colour, either pink or blue. It's so colorful, it's almost nauseating. Almost.

"Aunt Wren! Daddy!" Hannah waves at Ezra and runs to me. I squat in time to catch her in my arms, twirling her around.

"My pretty girl." She giggles when I plant tons of kisses all over he face.

There's a tug on my skirt, and when I look down, I see Noah. He gives me a dimpled grin, waving.

I pick him up too, nearly throwing my back but I manage. "And you too, my handsome boy," I say, repeating the same kisses, and thriving in his hearty giggles.

Gosh, they're adorable.

It takes a moment to realize everyone's staring at me, adoration in their eyes.

"I can't wait to have you carry my baby like that too, Wrennie." Quincy dabs at her eyes, rubbing her now very obvious bump.

My smile is wide. "I can't wait either."

Everyone coos, and I laugh, walking into the bar with the kids still in my arms, but not before I hear a hushed whisper.

"VP has a daughter?"

The clinking of my fork on my glass interrupts every chatter as I stand in front of everyone, beside the cake.

Slowly, all the chatter dwindles to a stop. "First of all, on behalf of the parents, I want to thank you all for coming."

A round of applause echoes, followed by hoots and cheers. It's been an hour since everyone settled down, dancing, eating and catching up.

But now, it's time to do what we are here for.

"Will the parents please step forward." I smile at Ray as he helps Quincy to her feet, striding toward the cake. "The gender of this baby will be revealed based on the colour in the cake."

My eyes find Ezra, Beth and the kids. He throws me a wink and a subtle thumbs up that encourages me.

The nerves cool. "Pink signifies a girl, and blue signifies a boy. Please, will the parents cut the cake?"

Everyone stands, watching as Ray and Quincy hold the knife together, and they cut out a triangular piece.

I hold up the pink colored cake, a large grin on my face. "It's a girl!"

The whole room erupts.

Quincy bursts into tears, and Ray fist pumps the air, pulling Quincy into a large hug.

Everyone is cheering, grinning, clapping. It's so surreal. I'm going to have a niece, a pretty baby girl.

The music turns up, and tears spring to my eyes when I find Ezra again. He's clapping, a wide smile on his face while Hannah and Noah play with balloons beside him.

He looks good, perfect...such an amazing man, patient, kind, breathtaking.

Only one thought pops into my head... I love him. God, I do. So much.

My eyes don't waver from him. Even when he slips out his phone from his pocket and clicks on the screen.

And I watch as the smile drops from his face, his grey eyes darken as he finds me across the room.

My heart sinks.

His face hardens, he's pissed.

In that moment I know.

I know that he knows.
