Wren

"You didn't have to get anything, Birdie." Ezra clips my seatbelt for me.

My cheeks burn. "I can't just go to a little boy's birthday party empty-handed."

He pauses, gaze heating up my skin and then he leans in and kisses me. It's a small peck, gone before I can think about it, but my lips tingle nonetheless.

"You're amazing," he praises, smacking his lips and turning the ignition.

I just stare, heart palpitating in my chest, and my whole body reddens.

The ease in which he did that feels so domestic, and I fear I'll get used to this side of Ezra.

"What did you do that for?" I ask, breathy.

He pulls out of the mall, and places a hand on my thigh. "Do what?"

I don't respond.

Instead I take in his profile, his messy dark hair, eyes focused on the road. He's dressed in a white dress shirt and blue denim.

He's gorgeous, rugged...absolutely breathtaking.

It's not good for my heart.

"Hm?" He glances briefly at me. "What did I do?"

I shrug, gulping. "I don't know...you're just being...well, behaving like we're in a relationship."

He snorts. "Because I kissed you?"

My stomach twists unpleasantly, and I shift in my seat.

"Nevermind." I push his hand from my thigh.

He gives me a side look, lips curved downward. "Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He pauses, frown deepening and I look out the window.

"Do you think I'm stupid?" He asks. "Did I do something? Do you need me to park somewhere?"

"Nope."

Irritation rolls off him in waves, and he doesn't say anything again. The rest of the car ride is tense, and awkward.

My phone lights up with a meme from Judi, and my lips twitch only slightly. She's been sending picture memes since I texted her about Ezra and I.

Unfortunately for her, and fortunately for me, we've not had a proper call about it.

I'm dreading it.

Ezra pulls up in front of a quaint white house, surrounded with greenery and a picket fence.

When I move to get out, the locks click into place.

"You're not leaving this car until you tell me where I went wrong," he says calmly, voice firm.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

A deep sigh rolls out of his lips. "Birdie," he raises my hand to his lips and kisses my knuckles, "–talk to me. Did I say something? Or do something?"

I huff, heat flaring in my vheeks. "It's nothing serious. In fact, it's silly."

The thing is, I'm embarrassed. I'm upset about something so trivial.

"It isn't silly. It got you upset, so tell me so I can make up for it. Please."

Now, I feel worse.

My throat tightens. "Okay, well I asked why–" I pause, pressing my lips together. Then, I breathe. "I asked why you're acting like we're in a relationship, and you laughed. There, I said it."

The words tumble out in one breath, and his eyes soften.

"You thought I was laughing at you?"

"No." I twiddle my thumbs. "I thought you were laughing at the idea of us being in a relationship."

He blows out a breath, and reaches for me. "Come here." I'm pulled into an awkward hug over the console which I quickly settle into.

God, he smells so good.

"First of all, I'm sorry," he murmurs. "I didn't laugh because of that. I laughed because giving you random kisses should not be a basis for being in a relationship. I just found the reasoning a little flawed, I'm sorry."

Everything about the way he speaks, validates me...it's so sweet, I nearly melt into a puddle of goo.

"So you're not against us being in a relationship?"

"We're fuck buddies, that's a relationship."

Pushing away from him, I glare. "Really?"

He laughs, shoulders racking.

"Very funny," I dead pan but it only makes him laugh harder until he eventually sobers.

"I promise," he chuckles. "I'm not laughing at you. But to answer your question..." he trails off with a sigh. "Honestly, I don't know."

My heart sinks to my stomach.

I nod. "Okay."

As I reach for the door, he holds me back. "Hear me out, will you?"

"Do I have to?" I respond dryly.

"Yes," he answers. "Sleeping together in itself is risky. Being in a relationship is something we'd have to commit to, and Ray will feed me my balls if he gets wind of that."

He's right, but it still makes me uncomfortable.

"Yea, I get it," I say. "Not like I want to date you though. We're just testing this secret fuck buddy thing out. Right?"

Lies, lies, lies.

He gives me a long look, like he can see right through though the bullshit I just spilled.

But, he nods anyway.

"Right."

Large palms cup my jaw, and my breath hitches.

"W-what is it?" I stutter.

"Can I kiss you now without being questioned?"

Blush coats my skin, and I roll my eyes. "Shut up."

He grins, pressing his lips to mine. And I return it. It's slow, soft, sweet...it's perfect.

A finger tips my chin up, and the kiss becomes deeper. Goosebumps spread across my skin, stomach clenching.

The console between us annoys me, but the kiss doesn't end. I can get lost in his kisses, in his scent.

He pulls away, smacking his lips. "You taste like strawberries."

I laugh. "You've wiped out all my lipgloss. You're—"

A knock on the window has me jumping away from him.

"Oh my god." I press a hand to my chest, staring at the gorgeous woman at Ezra's window.

Ezra pinches his lips together, eyes shining with humor as he rolls down the glass.

"Beth," he greet with a wide smile. "Hi."

She rolls her eyes. "Stop being a harlot and come meet the kids." Then she glances at me and grins. "I'm sorry about my brother's lack of manners. Ezra brinf her out so we can know ourselves...properly."

"Yes ma'am." Ezra rolls up the window and unlocks the car.

I round the car to meet Ezra and his sister.

I'm shocked at how tall she is, almost as tall as Ezra with the same thick black curls but with brown eyes, although it's equally as piercing.

Freckles scatter across her cheek bones, and the beauty mark on her face only adds to her allure.

She's stunning.

"Hi," I greet, stretching a hand out. "You're beautiful."

"I like her." She winks at Ezra. "Thank you. I'm Elizabeth, you must be Wren."

He told her about me.

I give Ezra a look, biting back my giddy smile. "Yes, I am–"

"Uncle EJ!" A little boy's voice echoes and I turn to see him running towards us.

Behind him is a little blonde girl in pigtails. "Wait for me, Noah!" Then she looks up, and her grin is instant.

"Daddy!!"
