Falling For The Biker: The Vice President's Girl Chapter 145
Ezra
[Eight Months Later]
Mom: We're almost there, honey.
My heart jolts, and my palm sweats when I read the text that came in a second ago. I meet Judi's gaze few distances away, and when she lifts a brow, I nod.
"Yes," I confirm. "They're almost here."
She grins and fluffs the last ribbons. "You guys! Wren's almost here!"
Everyone scrambles to their places, and by everyone, I mean; Ray, Beth, Noah, Lizzy and Ajax.
Wren has no idea they're all here, she has no idea what I have planned. She thinks it's Hannah's birthday party, but what she doesn't know is Hannah asked for a special birthday gift.
Speaking of Hannah, she bounces up to me in a pink tulle dress, and a birthday crown on her head. She's got splatters of glitters on her face and I know Judi put them there.
That's going to be a bitch to take off. But she likes it.
"Daddy–" she slides her sweaty palms in mine...or is it my hands that are sweaty? Either way, she looks up at me with a bit of fear and nervous excitement, "–what if she says 'no'?"
Good question, sweetheart.
I exhale, and lower to my hunches with a small smile. "Do you think she'll say no?"
"I don't know. I don't want her to."
"She loves you, you know that right?"
Hannah nods. "I love her, too. But what if—"
"Hey, hey," I kiss her forehead. "No what ifs. It's your big day, today. You're seven years old. Whatever Wren decides, just know she will always love you—us, okay?"
She breathes deeply then nods. "Okay, daddy." With that, she walks over to meet Noah.
It's not the first time she has asked me that. Since we started planning this, there's no day she doesn't ask 'what if Wren says no?'.
Wren and my mom had been here much earlier to help with decorations, but when Ray and the others were coming, I had to beg my mom to make up some excuse to take Wren out for a bit.
And now, they're returning and I feel like I'd shit with the way my stomach rolls and churns with nerves.
The small box burns a hole in my suit jacket, and god, I've never felt so much anxiety in my life.
I jump in fright when I feel a hand on my shoulder.
"You're jumpy." Ray chuckles. "I have never seen you this nervous. Fuck, man."
"I want to throw up."
That's not entirely true, but still.
He snorts. "I understand. It was the same for me when I proposed to Quincy. Even though we've been together for so many years, and have a baby together, I was still so goddamn nervous."
"I think it's the realization. When it finally hits you that this is it."
"Yes." He nods. "I knew she'd say yes, we'd talked about it. But I still thought I'd pass out."
"I want to pass out," I reply, breathing deeply.
He smiles softly. "You know, I'm still surprised."
"About?"
"About you, and my sister. When you called me and told me you wanted to propose, for the first ten seconds, I was stunned, frozen," he says. "I almost wanted to say no. Almost."
My laughter is dry. "Thank God you didn't."
"It was purely instinct. And then I had to sit with it, and honestly, I'm glad you have each other. I see how you take care of her, and everyone around you. And I'm glad, so fucking glad, that my best friend will be my brother-in-law."
"We don't know if she'll say yes."
His brow lifts. "Really?"
"I mean we just celebrated her on passing the exams, she's going to start her nursing school in a few months, what if she's not ready?"
"No one said you have to get married right away, Ezra."
"I know that, but—"
"They're coming up!" Judi shrieks. "Oh my god, Raymond! Go to your position!"
"Yes ma'am." He salutes, pats me on the back and leaves.
A small smile curves on my lips as Judi barks orders at everyone that went out of their position. She's been such a big help, and an amazing friend to Wren.
"Hannah girl," Judi sighs. "Go stand with daddy, please."
"Sorry, aunt Judi." She leaves Noah and runs up to me.
We stand facing the door, waiting for the moment our world walks through.
But I glance back once more. And I'm glad I did. Because I see our biggest supporters, cheesing at us with wide smiles on their faces and encouraging thumbs up.
Lizzy and Wren have been talking even more since we moved here, so I had to invite Lizzy for this. Unfortunately, Quincy's visiting her parents with MaryAnne and couldn't make it.
Ray promised to get everything on video and even schedule a video call for both of them.
The hall is beautifully decorated courtesy of Judi, the best interior decorator and event planner, the long table is beautifully set...everything is gorgeous.
And it still shows that this is Hannah's birthday, with pinks and purples, gummies and barbies.
Suddenly, the hall goes quiet and I hear Wren's laughter just before the door opens.
And she steps in.
Everything stops for a whole second.
All I see is her.
Plum dress cinched at the waist and flowing to the top of her knees. A white pair of heels, and her hair up in a long, straightened pony tail.
My breath hitches because she's so breathtakingly gorgeous.
Even though I already saw her in this outfit earlier, I still can't get over how stunning she looks.
Her smile lights up some more when she sees me, and Hannah. "Hey, birthday girl. We got you another cak—" she freezes.
Her eyes look past me and towards Ray, Beth, Lizzy, Ajax and Noah. "Oh my god," she gasps. "W-what? Ray? Lizzy? What?"
As she takes a step forward, my mom plants a soft hand on her shoulder. "I'll take the cake," she says. "I think Hannah and Ezra have something to ask you before you meet your family."
She frowns. "Huh?"
Gently, I nudge Hannah but she doesn't move. Instead she grabs my hands and tugs me with her.
This was not the plan, but my little girl is nervous. Hell, so am I.
"Hi darling," I greet.
Confusion swirls in her bright blue orbs as they dart between Hannah and I. "H-hey, is everything okay?"
I nod. "Definitely."
"You look constipated."
Someone chokes on laughter from behind and I chuckle too, unable to help it. "I am," I reply.
"Aunt Wren," Hannah says softly.
Wren squats, cupping her face. "Yes, sweetheart. Are you okay?"
"Daddy and I want to ask you a question for my birthday."
"Oh?" Her head tilts. "Is there another birthday present you want?"
Hannah nods. "Yes."
"What is it, sweetie?"
Hannah looks at me, and I give her a firm nod.
And then...we deliver what we rehearsed.
