At that moment someone knocked on the door and by the scent I knew that it was Ethan. I tell him to come in and the door opens to reveal him and Renee. Hmm, I wonder why I didn’t catch her scent? They walk closer to me and the doctor bows his head before turning and walking out of the room.

“How’s he doing?” asks Ethan.

“No change. His vitals are stable, but he still hasn’t moved. I’m constantly talking to him but I don’t think he hears me.” A tear slides from my eye down my cheek.

“Don’t cry Freya. He’s strong and I’m sure he’ll wake up soon.” says Renee.

“I pray to the Goddess that you’re right. Anyway, what brings you both by here today?”

“Oh, the witches wanted me to tell you that Tabitha is awake. She’s pissed, but she is awake and asking for you.” says Ethan.

“Me? Why is she asking for me and why is she pissed?”

“She won’t talk to anyone but you is all I know. I know that you don’t want to leave him, and if the circumstances would allow, I wouldn’t have come to you with this, but you need to speak with her. The last thing we all need is for her to go on a rampage when the only one powerful enough to stop her is in a coma.”

“I understand. Give me thirty minutes and I’ll be right there.”

“Okay, I’ll let them know.” He and Renee turn and leave the room together and it makes my heart hurt. Seeing mates together when I can’t be with mine hurts me and I wish it didn’t. It isn’t their fault, but I resent them for being able to talk to their mates and have them hold them at night.

Thirty minutes later I am in the room with Tabitha, but she isn’t saying anything. How long is she just going to sit here because this is time away from my mate. Finally, I’ve had enough of the silence, so I open my mouth to ask her why she wanted to talk to me, and she starts talking.

“I asked you to do one thing, and yet again your kind failed me.” What is she talking about?

“Tabitha, what are you...” She raised a hand to stop me from finishing my sentence and spoke again.

“All you had to do was keep her safe and you didn’t keep your promise. You promised me that she wouldn’t be anywhere near that battlefield. What the fuck was she doing there Freya?!” She screamed at me.

“Tabitha, she wasn’t supposed to be there. I made arrangements for her to stay with the women, children, and others that weren’t fighting. She was supposed to be in the bunker protecting them. I was just as shocked as you to see her when she showed up.”

“Your mate almost killed my child!” I just looked at her because I had nothing to say to that and I didn’t think it was a statement that needed a comment.” How could he want to kill my child?” She had different emotions playing on her face and my heart broke for her. “She is all that I have left of my mate, and he tried to take that from me as well.”

“I thought you were planning on dying, so you would have lost her anyway. Did you have a change of heart about living?” This conversation was starting to piss me off. At least she was able to have a child with her mate and build a life with him before he was executed while mine is fighting for his life or should I say his sanity in a coma. “You wanted to kill yourself regardless of how it would affect her and Dylan, your second chance mate, but you’re mad that she was almost killed? Why does it matter to you?”

“When you have a child then you will understand. Your life no longer matters. Your happiness and plans no longer matter. The most important thing to you is that little life that you bring into this world.”

“Then why are you fighting so hard to not be around? Why won’t you allow the most important thing in the world to you to finally have a mother?” says Shayla.

She walks into the room and stands next to me staring at her mother dead in the eyes. I move to leave the room and give them some privacy, but Shayla grabs my arm and tells me to stay.

“You just don’t understand.” says Tabitha.

“You’re right mother, I don’t understand. I get that you gave me up because you didn’t feel like you were mentally sound enough to care for me and I thank you for that but help me understand how we get reunited just for you to say that you want to die. Do you hate me that much? And what about Dylan? Why won’t you give yourself a second chance at happiness? I’m sure my father loved you as much as you loved him, but he has been gone a long time and it is time to let go. If he is or was as great as you say, then I’m sure he doesn’t want this life for you and he doesn’t want you to kill yourself. You’re being very selfish. Why would you make us go through the pain of losing you when you know first-hand what losing someone you love more than anything feels like?” Shayla turns and walks briskly out of the room.
