Logan’s POV

"Hey, good-looking! Where have you been hiding lately?" Rowena purred, her hands pressing against my chest as she leaned in to kiss me. I caught her by the shoulders before she could get any closer, pushing her back to arm’s length.

"Really, Logan? Rowena Grimshaw? Are you fucking kidding me?" Liam snarled in my head.

"I know, okay? I fucked up! But you're not helping right now!" I snapped back.

From the corner of my eye, I saw Lia flinch when Rowena touched me. I didn’t know if it was jealousy or just discomfort at witnessing the exchange. Probably the latter—wishful thinking wouldn’t get me anywhere. Liam instinctively pulled her closer to his side, his grip protective. She let go of my hand, and my chest tightened. If Rowena noticed any of it, she didn’t let on.

"Baby, is that any way to treat your future Luna?" she whined, her voice dripping with entitlement.

"What the hell are you talking about, Rowena?" I scoffed, my patience running thin. "I barely remember spending any time with you, and I sure as hell never gave you any reason to think you'd be my Luna!"

She was out of her damn mind.

"You don’t mean that, Logy!" she cried, her voice rising in hysteria. "You told me we'd be together! You promised me I’d be your Luna!"

Though she and I had never marked each other, I could feel the tension rippling through Lia. I needed to end this before Rowena caused any more damage.

"I am your Alpha," I commanded, my voice dropping with authority. "And you will address me as such or not at all. This conversation is over."

My words carried the weight of an Alpha command, and the moment they left my mouth, she had no choice but to obey. Without another glance at Rowena, I grabbed Lia’s hand and pulled her past her, out the door.

I didn’t check if Liam was following—I could feel his presence at my back. Lia struggled to keep up, but I didn’t slow down. My mind was racing, too tangled in thoughts to think straight.

What the hell was that? I knew I had never promised Rowena anything, yet she spoke as if I had. The certainty in her voice unnerved me.

We reached the third-floor landing when Lia suddenly yanked her hand from mine and came to an abrupt stop.

I turned to face her, and the look in her eyes sent a cold shiver through me. Fury radiated off her in waves. And honestly? I couldn’t blame her. Some part of me had known this moment was coming.

I stood frozen. My wolf growled at me to fix this, to say something—anything—but the words wouldn’t come. I braced myself, expecting her anger to hit me like a storm.

But she turned to Liam first.

"Why did you bring me here?" she asked, her voice calm. Too calm. And that worried me more than if she had screamed.

Liam hesitated, confusion flickering across his face before he answered.

"You're our mate and Luna. We want you with us. Always."

"I'm not a child, so don’t treat me like one," she said, her tone eerily steady as she turned to me. "I know what you meant about ‘spending time’ with that girl. That was your way of saying you slept with her."

She wasn’t asking. She knew.

"You obviously led her to believe she would be your Luna, so at some point, you must have wanted her as your mate. And that’s fine. I don’t need a title. I certainly don’t need either of you giving up your lives or relationships just because some mate bond tells you to. Anything you think you feel for me isn’t real. You don’t even know me."

"It isn’t stupid!" Liam snapped, frustration lacing his words. "The mate bond is a gift. We’re paired for a reason—because we were made to complete each other."

Lia didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t argue.

"Please, baby girl, just listen," I pleaded. "Rowena was a mistake. I never wanted her as my Luna, never wanted her as my mate."

I was grasping for words, anything that would make her understand. But my thoughts were tangled, my tongue clumsy. I had never been good with words the way Liam was.

Fang howled in my head, his desperation mirroring my own. He could feel her wolf slipping away from us through the bond.

Lia’s lips curled into a bitter smile. "Is that your M.O. then? Using your Alpha status and the promise of a future to get women into your bed? And when you’re done, you throw them away like trash and use your Alpha command to make them disappear?"

I flinched.

"How lucky am I," she continued, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "to have a mate of such stellar character? Tell me, Logan, how many more ‘Rowenas’ are out there? And why the hell would I ever willingly tie myself to a man who clearly doesn’t understand the meaning of loyalty? How long until you do the same to me?"

Her words struck like knives, each one sharper than the last.

"Baby—" I choked out, but it was useless.

Because she was right.

I had known from the beginning that I didn’t deserve her. That the moment she saw me for who I really was, she wouldn’t want me.

Her expression hardened. "And don’t call me ‘baby girl.’ I’ll never be your anything. Coming here was a mistake."

With that, she turned and walked away.

Fang roared in my head, begging me to go after her, but I was paralyzed, the weight of her words crushing me.

"Fix this. Now." Liam’s voice snapped through my mind like a whip.

I met his gaze, and the sheer panic in his eyes jolted me into action. I didn’t know what I could say or do, but I couldn’t just stand there and let my brother lose her because of me.

Lia was already on the stairs above, furiously typing on her phone. She was moving fast. Too fast.

Liam and I took off after her, bounding up the stairs two at a time. We reached her door just as she was slamming it shut. I thrust my arm out, blocking it before it could close, and shoved my way inside.

"Lia, please," I pleaded. "Just talk to me for a minute."

She turned to face me, and the moment our eyes met, my blood ran cold.

It was the look of a decision already made.

I could feel what was coming through our bond. Her fury. Her sadness. Her resolve.

My wolf lunged forward, desperate, just as she spoke.

"I, Dahlia Sterling, of the Crystal Moon pack, reject—"

I lunged, reaching for her, desperate to stop her from finishing the words that would sever our bond.

But I never got the chance.

Before my hand could touch her, she crumpled to the ground at my feet.

Panic clawed at my throat.

I had thought I knew fear when she started rejecting us.

But nothing—nothing—compared to the terror of seeing her lying there, lifeless, on the floor before me.
