Dahlia's POV

Leaving Liam standing at the door of his office, I made my way to the clinic, a lightness in my steps that I hadn’t felt in ages. It was strange how much could shift in such a short span of time. A few days had brought more change than I could have imagined.

"Lia—uh, I mean Luna!" Tori's voice called out as she hurried to meet me, her excitement barely contained. I rolled my eyes and couldn’t help but laugh.

"Just Lia is fine, please. I’m here to work, just like every other time," I told her, pulling her into a quick hug.

"Really? That’s fantastic! Dr. Edgewater will be thrilled to see you! He’s swamped today and a little grumpy about it. We all thought, you know, now that you're the new Luna, you might not be helping here anymore."

She sucked in a breath, as though she’d used all her air just to get those words out in one go. I laughed, shaking my head.

"Well, I’m here now. Point me in the right direction so I can get started."

We made our way down the back hall, the familiar scent of antiseptic and busy energy filling the space when, out of nowhere, Theron came charging out of an exam room, nearly knocking us over. Luckily, he reached out in time to catch me before I could face-plant on the floor.

"Reinforcements have arrived!" Tori announced proudly, pointing to me.

"Are you serious?" Theron asked, his tone full of disbelief. "You’re actually here to help?"

"Put me to work," I replied with a firm nod.

"Thank fucking Goddess!" Theron exhaled in relief, then, as if realizing how unprofessional that sounded, he stepped back quickly. "I mean, uh, thank you, Luna." I was still catching my breath when Tori leaned in.

"She doesn’t want you calling her that," she whispered conspiratorially.

"It’s still just Lia, Theron," I confirmed, grabbing the nearest chart and knocking on the door to the exam room.

Two hours later, we’d managed to clear the entire morning roster, and we were taking a well-deserved break in the break room, grabbing some coffee.

"How are you so efficient?" Theron asked, his expression a mix of awe and disbelief. "You see twice as many patients as I do in the same amount of time, yet they all rave about how attentive you are and how important you make them feel."

"It’s a gift," I said with a playful wink.

Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. Pulling it out, I saw it was one of my Crystal Moon patients, Chiara Winslow.

"Chiara? How’s everything going with the twins?" I asked, concerned for her.

"Is this Lia?" A man’s voice answered, tight with fear. "This is Fenris Winslow, Chiara’s husband. Something’s wrong with her. Can you help?"

I straightened, the anxiety creeping into my chest. "Fenris, tell me exactly what’s happening. Don’t leave anything out!"

"Everything seemed fine. She healed fast after the twins were born—you know, you were there. She wasn’t bleeding when you did her postpartum checkup. But today... today she started bleeding again. A lot. She got up to feed one of the pups, and blood just poured out of her. That was over an hour ago, and it hasn’t stopped. She’s pale—almost gray. I don’t know what to do!" His voice cracked, each word a sob of helplessness and fear.

"Fenris, listen to me," I said, my voice calm but firm. "Get a neighbor to watch the pups. You get Chiara to the infirmary right now. I’ll notify Dr. Winslett to expect you, and I’ll meet you there. Don’t waste any time. Do you understand?"

"Y-yes! I’ll do it now!" His response was almost frantic, relief flooding his voice.

"Good. See you soon," I said, ending the call. I looked at Theron, who was watching me closely.

"Can I help?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.

"I don’t think so, but thank you. Hopefully, we’ll have it under control by the time I get there. If not, we’ll have plenty of hands to help." I was already heading for the door. "I just hope this isn’t my fault. What if I missed part of the placenta?"

"There are a lot of reasons for secondary postpartum hemorrhage, Lia. You know that. Don’t blame yourself before you know what’s really going on. Even if you did miss something, it happens to the best of us eventually." His attempt at comforting me worked, though I wasn’t sure it would be enough to ease my worries.

"I know wolves die from complications sometimes, but I’ll be damned if I let it happen to her!" The words came out of my mouth with more conviction than I’d expected, but the weight of responsibility crushed me all the same.

I sprinted all the way back to the pack house, barely slowing down until I burst into Liam’s office. My only thought was to borrow a car and get to Chiara as fast as I could. But when I saw not one, but three pairs of eyes staring at me in surprise, I froze. The words caught in my throat.

Liam broke the silence, cutting off my thoughts. "Angel, please don’t interrupt me during a meeting," he snapped, his tone harsh.

Was he serious? Anger flared within me, the indignation rushing in as I stared at him. Did he really think I’d interrupt him for something trivial? This wasn’t the time for this bullshit.

"Sometimes there are more important things than meetings, Liam. But please, don’t let me keep you." I shot back, my tone cold and cutting, before turning on my heels and walking out.

I knew the keys to his truck were in the console table by the door—he’d left them there every night without fail. I wasn’t about to ask permission, not with a life on the line. This was an emergency, and I was taking the damn truck.
