Dahlia’s POV

I’d long since lost track of how far I’d run—maybe for hours—when it finally dawned on me where my wolf was leading us. The storm that churned around us was fueled by our shared pain and fury, raw power surging through my veins as her emotions tangled with mine.

And yet, in all that time, I hadn’t realized she’d been the one steering us. While I had spiraled into a mess of heartache and confusion, she’d held onto a thread of clarity, forming a plan even as she bore the weight of both our burdens. Guilt pressed down on me, heavy and relentless, as I felt her retreat into the quiet of my mind, curling up to tend to her own wounds at last.

“I’m so sorry, Blue,” I whispered through my tears, which mingled with the rain as they slid down my cheeks. “I should’ve talked to you sooner. I know Logan and Fang are your mates too… I just—I wasn’t ready to deal with any of it.”

“I understand, love. I’ll always carry what I can for you.” Her voice came faint, so soft it sent a ripple of worry through me.

“You shouldn’t have to,” I replied, heart aching. “We’re a team.”

Even as I said the words, I could feel how close she was to breaking. Her sorrow threatened to drown us both. She whimpered, her sound low and broken, then finally murmured, “I knew you had to leave. I just… I wish we’d stayed long enough to ask him why. Why he hurt us like this.”

Her voice drifted off, and then she was gone—deep in sleep.

Her words echoed in my mind, but I couldn’t agree. Facing him wouldn’t have given us closure, only reopened wounds that were already festering. Nothing he could have said would’ve erased the betrayal. I’d been foolish to believe him when he promised I was the only one he’d ever love.

People don’t change. I knew that. But I’d wanted so badly for him to be different.

If I’d stayed, all that would’ve followed were tears, blame, and ugly truths. I refused to let myself be humiliated again. I hadn’t done it with Finnian, and I wouldn’t do it now. The thought of crying in front of him made my stomach turn. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing me broken.

I forced myself to breathe, to focus. I needed a plan.

Looking around, I realized I was standing at the border of Midnight Moon Pack territory. Blue had brought me here—and it wasn’t a bad idea. No one here knew me, and if I could convince my aunt to keep my secret, I might just be able to disappear for a while. At least long enough to figure out my next move.

There was a more pressing issue, though. My wolf had retreated, and I’d shifted back into my human form, completely naked and exposed. I’d have to approach the guards like this, praying they had the decency to offer a blanket before their curiosity got the better of them.

Gathering what was left of my dignity, I stepped from the cover of the trees, pushing aside the pain, and walked toward the guards with my head held high.

One of them, a large, shirtless man in tan cargo shorts, stepped forward. Tattoos covered his chest and arms, and he radiated strength and authority. His features were sharp, his gaze intense—but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes that told me he found the situation more entertaining than alarming.

“Evening, ma’am. What can I do for you?” he asked, polite, though his eyes traveled freely across my body.

I lifted a brow at his obvious inspection, but he merely shrugged as if to say, Well, what did you expect?

“I’m looking for my aunt,” I said, awkwardly. “She’s a member of this pack.”

Thankfully, a second guard approached with a military blanket and draped it over my shoulders. I gripped it tightly, grateful beyond words, and nodded my thanks.

“And you are?” the first guard asked, tone clipped, making it clear I wasn’t getting anything without giving something first.

“Dahlia Sterling. Beta Female of the Crystal Moon Pack,” I replied, extending my hand. “Nice to meet you…” I let my voice trail off, subtly reminding him he hadn’t offered his name.

Recognition flickered in his eyes before he took my hand. Great. He knew my father. So much for staying hidden.

“Welcome to Midnight Moon, Dahlia,” he said. “I’m Zared, Gamma of this pack. I’ve met your father before. That makes you Calliope Halloway’s niece, right?”

“Uh, yes.” I eyed him warily. “You seem to know a lot about me already.”

“Not really. Just good memory,” he said with a shrug. “Met your father at an Alpha convention. He mentioned being mated to Calliope’s sister. Come with me.”

He turned on his heel and started walking. When I didn’t immediately follow, he sighed loudly and glanced back. “Don’t you want to see your aunt?”

“You could’ve said that was where we were headed,” I snapped, hurrying after him. “For all I knew, you were taking me to the cells.”

“If that was the plan, you wouldn’t be walking behind me,” he replied, rolling his eyes.

Blue growled in the back of my mind, but I hushed her. He might be irritating, but he was helping us.

We reached a sleek black sedan parked just inside the gates. Zared opened the passenger door, and I climbed in, pulling the blanket tighter around me.

He slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine.

“Sorry I don’t have clothes for you. Could stop at the pack house, but your aunt probably has something that fits better.”

He didn’t sound sorry at all. Still, I was more curious about seeing Calliope than offended by his indifference. I hadn’t seen her in years. Would she recognize me? Had she changed her mind about helping me?

The drive took us through what looked like a quaint little town. Cozy houses, a small park surrounded by shops and cafes—it all felt simple and peaceful.

“Is your pack house nearby?” I asked, breaking the silence. “None of these homes look big enough.”

“It’s just past the town,” he replied. “Smaller than most. Only ranked wolves live there. Everyone else prefers their own space.”

I nodded and fell quiet again. Conversation was too much while grief kept dragging me under.

Eventually, we pulled up to a charming blue house with white shutters and a white picket fence. Roses bloomed in the garden, and they instantly reminded me of my mother. Maybe she and Calliope had shared a love for gardening.

“We’re here,” Zared announced.

I didn’t wait for him. Nerves jittered through me, and I nearly dropped the blanket as I jumped out. Adjusting it quickly, I followed him to the front door.

My heart raced as we waited. I hadn’t considered if someone else lived here.

The door flew open after Zared knocked—hard enough to wake the dead.

A stunning woman with auburn hair and vibrant green eyes stood in the doorway. She looked at Zared, then her gaze landed on me.

“Dahlia? Is that really you?” she gasped, stepping forward with arms wide. “You look just like your mother.”

I collapsed into her embrace, no hesitation. The safety of her arms shattered every barrier I’d tried to hold.

I sobbed uncontrollably, all the pain and betrayal breaking free.

If she hadn’t been holding me together, I might’ve dissolved into nothing. I squeezed my eyes shut, but the images came anyway—him with her. Their touches, their moans. Everything I once believed was mine now belonged to someone else.

How could I have been so blind?

I gave them everything—my heart, my body, my trust.

And still, I couldn’t regret it. Because with them, I’d felt like the truest version of myself.

One day, I’d face the truth. That I saw what I wanted to see. That I loved a lie.

But not today.

Today, I would dry my tears, hold my head high, and begin again—with my aunt beside me.
