Liam's POV

Two hours had passed, and at last, we were dragging ourselves from the warmth of our room. Another shower had come and gone, and I made sure to sever the link with Logan. At least we were clean now.

I had no clue how Logan was going to manage the mess in his car, but I was certain he’d figure it out.

Lia was heading to the clinic to check on Theron, hoping she could offer him some help while we worked. I’d urged her to rest, to take it easy for a day, but she insisted on staying busy. I linked my fingers with hers as we walked toward my office, the simple act of holding her hand in public sending a surge of satisfaction through me. It felt good, claiming her, marking her as mine. I didn’t want to let go—not now, not ever.

When we reached the door, I stopped her, pulling her into a deep kiss. I poured every ounce of my love, my passion, into it, not caring if the whole world saw. Life was pulling us back into our daily grind, our countless responsibilities, but I was determined not to let that stop me from reminding her—showing her—that she would always be my priority.

We broke apart, both of us gasping for air. I watched as she turned to walk away, her jeans clinging to her curves in the way that made my body stir, the image of her leaving me hard and restless. I didn’t move until she disappeared from view, and only then did I step into my office.

"Well, looks like Luna finally let you off the leash, huh?" Nikolai quipped as I entered.

I shot him a look. "She doesn’t have us on a leash, Nikolai. If anything, it’s our wolves that are clingy. And just remember—whatever snarky comments you throw now, they’ll come back to bite you when you find your mate."

"No thanks! Don’t want one. Don’t need one," he replied, brushing me off.

I noticed Bastian’s grimace from across the room and quickly changed the subject for his sake.

"So, what exciting things have we missed the last few days?" I asked, adopting my best 'let's get down to business' face.

"Aren’t we waiting for Logan?" Bastian asked, glancing at the clock.

"He’s running a bit behind," I smirked, amused at his predicament. "We can start without him. I’ll fill him in later." Bastian nodded, and the meeting continued.

Most of the report was routine, thankfully. There had been some rogue activity near our borders—nothing hostile, just scavengers looking for food. Warrior training was on schedule, because, of course, Nikolai would allow nothing less. He started outlining a new youth training program set to launch next month, and after a brief discussion, I promised to get Logan’s input and get back to him. From my end, it seemed like a solid idea.

A couple of hours later, we were winding down, talking about inventory issues I knew were already under control. I was about to zone out when Bastian’s voice brought me back to attention.

"... think witches could be involved, do you?" he asked, sounding almost as though he were thinking out loud.

I blinked, completely lost. "I’m sorry, what?"

He repeated himself, his eyes narrowing as he sensed my distraction. "The weird weather pattern from the other night. Could witches be involved? It felt too targeted to be a coincidence."

Shit. This was exactly what I was afraid of.

There was no love lost between witches and wolves. We had to ensure the pack knew Lia wasn’t one of them, but we couldn’t reveal the truth about her just yet. Not until we were certain she could control her powers.

"How exactly would a witch have gotten into our pack undetected?" I glanced at Nikolai, hoping he'd back me up.

"They wouldn't," he said with absolute certainty.

I nodded in agreement, but Bastian didn’t seem convinced.

"But how can you be sure?" he pressed. "As far as we know, our defenses have never been tested against a witch. I can’t shake the feeling there’s something... supernatural about this."

I could feel a groan rising in my chest. Damn, Bastian’s persistence made him a great Beta—but it was a pain in the ass right now.

I was about to tell them the truth, screw the consequences, when the door slammed open, and Lia burst in.

When she saw I wasn’t alone, she froze, her mouth hanging open, as though the words were stuck in her throat.

"Angel, please don’t interrupt me during a meeting," I snapped before I could stop myself.

The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted them. I was just rattled—trying to keep a lid on our secrets and not wanting her to overhear any discussion about her powers. But Lia didn’t wait for me to apologize.

"Sometimes, there are more important things than meetings, Liam. But please, don’t let me keep you." Her voice was cold, sharp. She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving me stunned.

"Damn, that girl is feisty!" Nikolai grinned.

"That girl is your Luna," I reminded him, my tone softening as I watched the door she’d just walked through. "And you have no idea."

Both Nikolai and Bastian laughed, but I couldn’t shake the frustration. I’d just promised myself I would always make her my priority—and the first time a little stress came up, I made her feel like nothing more than a nuisance.

"So, back to our previous conversation, Alpha," Nikolai said, his voice dripping with amusement at the title. "I’ll look into ensuring our defenses are solid. I’ll reach out to other packs who’ve had issues with witches and see what kind of protections they’ve used."

"Thanks, Nikolai. And I’m sorry I snapped at you. Seems my Luna isn’t the only one I owe an apology to today."

"Don’t sweat it, man," he said with a wink. "I mean, what’s it been—four hours since you got any? Probably just withdrawal."

His deadpan delivery had me laughing despite myself, especially when Bastian nearly fell off the couch behind him.

"Okay, you snarky bastard! I deserved that." I chuckled, but then my tone hardened. "Now, can we get back to business so I can go find my mate and grovel?"

I jumped right into pack house repairs, giving them no chance to drag it out. Thirty minutes later, the meeting was over. I excused myself and immediately set out to find Lia and beg for her forgiveness.

I searched the entire house, the gardens, but she was nowhere to be found. Assuming she might’ve gone for a run, I linked the patrol team to check if they’d seen her. I knew she was angry with me, and she might’ve needed to let her wolf out to burn off some frustration.

I waited, hoping for good news—but when the patrol responded, it wasn’t what I’d wanted to hear.

"Alpha, the Luna left the territory about an hour ago."

"What do you mean she left? How?" I barked into the link, panic creeping into my chest.

"Well, um, she was driving your truck. We assumed you knew and didn’t tell us she couldn’t leave."

"Of course she can leave. Thanks for the info." I cut the link, trying to keep my voice steady.

I immediately dialed her phone—no answer. I left a voicemail, begging her to call me, to let me know she was safe. Then, I made the dreaded phone calls.

The one to her father wasn’t as bad as I expected. His response was typical. "What the fuck do you mean you can’t find my daughter?" he growled at first, but after hearing the full story, he just started laughing.

"I told you not to piss off my little spitfire. You’ll learn," he said, still chuckling. He promised to help find her, but it didn’t reassure me much.

I finally dialed Logan’s number, knowing I couldn’t put it off any longer.

"What's up, bro?" he answered cheerfully.

I took a deep breath, trying to keep it together. "Logan, she left."
