Liam's POV

“What the hell just happened?” I muttered, turning to face my brother. Logan let out a frustrated growl, which quickly died in his throat the moment our mother snapped at us.

“Language, Liam!” she scolded sharply, then turned to Logan. “And stop growling. You might be part animal, but that doesn’t mean you need to behave like one.”

Her tone softened, but the weight of her concern remained. “Now, will someone please explain what’s going on?”

Logan exhaled heavily, his shoulders drooping. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “Everything was going great. We had an amazing day, she was thrilled about meeting you all. Then she stepped away for just a few minutes, and when she came back—something had shifted. She was completely different.”

“If something had upset her,” I reasoned, “wouldn’t we have felt it through the bond?”

“You boys know emotions don’t come through that clearly until the mark is in place,” Mom reminded gently.

“We can feel it,” Logan and I said in unison.

“Our bond is different,” I added quickly. “It’s a long story. We’ll explain it later.”

Right now, all I cared about was making sure Lia was okay. I reached over and tugged Logan’s sleeve. “Come on. Let’s go check on our mate.”

But he didn’t move. His attention was locked onto something—or someone—across the room.

“I should’ve known she’d be involved,” he muttered darkly.

I followed his gaze, eyes narrowing when I spotted Rowena sitting at a table with one of her friends. They were leaning close, whispering in hushed tones, and from the way they kept glancing around, they were clearly up to something. Rowena's eyes lifted and met ours, and the flicker of guilt that crossed her face gave her away.

“I told that snake to stay away from Lia,” Logan hissed, fury crackling in his voice. “Now she’s going to pay.”

He pushed back from the table so abruptly that his chair crashed to the floor behind him. I lunged forward, grabbing him by the collar before he could storm off.

“Logan, wait!” I said firmly. “Even if she did do something, we can’t prove it yet. We can’t just go after her without evidence—we’d look like we’re abusing power in front of the pack.”

“That’s exactly why I have an Alpha command,” he growled. “She’ll talk if I tell her to.”

“Logan!” Dad’s voice was calm, but carried a warning edge that couldn’t be ignored. “I know how it feels when your mate’s hurting, but you cannot use your Alpha tone over personal matters. Especially without cause.”

“Why do you suspect her?” Mom asked, eyes narrowing toward Rowena.

“Because this wouldn’t be the first time she’s tried to come between us,” I answered. “She’s been interfering ever since Lia showed up. She still thinks she has a claim to Logan… she’s convinced she’s supposed to be our Luna.”

Mom snorted, her tone laced with sarcasm. “I wonder why she’d think that,” she said, shooting a pointed look at Logan.

“The best thing you can do for your mate right now,” she continued, “is to stay away from that girl—and anyone like her. I know how hard that might be, given the mess you’ve made, but this? This isn’t helping. Instead of wasting your energy on anger, go fix what you broke.”

Logan flinched, the shame briefly crossing his face before rage took hold again.

“Screw this. I’m going to check on Lia,” he muttered before stomping toward the stairs.

I offered our parents an apologetic glance and hurried after him.

“You need to calm down,” I snapped through our mental link.

His only response was a low growl in my head.

“She’s already upset,” I reminded him. “She doesn’t need to feel our emotions making it worse.”

That seemed to get through to him. Logan halted, fists clenched and chest heaving, waiting for me to catch up. His fury hadn’t subsided, but at least his restraint was holding—for now.

I took a breath and spoke gently. “Let’s just check on our girl, alright? We’ll talk to her. Everything else can wait. Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe she really is just feeling sick.”

“Maybe,” he muttered, then turned and started walking again.

We knocked on Lia’s door. No response.

The sound of the shower running reached us, and I figured she probably couldn’t hear us.

“Ghost? Fang? Can either of you reach Blue?” I asked our wolves.

“It feels like she’s shut me out,” Ghost said, his voice filled with unease.

“I can’t sense her either,” Fang added, just as agitated.

Logan frowned. “Let’s just grab the key and let ourselves in. We’ll wait until she’s out of the shower and then talk.”

I shook my head. “No. I don’t want her to feel trapped. Let’s give her a little space. We’ll check back soon.”

Reluctantly, he agreed. Still, he insisted we wait in his room—it was closer, and we’d be able to hear the moment Lia left hers.
