My Possessive Alpha Twins For Mate Chapter 294
Dahlia's POV
I made the usual hour-long drive from Blood Moon to Crystal Moon pack territory in a record-breaking thirty minutes. Goddess, how I was thankful for my wolf reflexes. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot of the pack infirmary, I jammed the truck into park and leapt out, leaving the keys carelessly in the ignition. There was no time to waste.
I burst through the front doors, not slowing my pace, navigating through the crowded hallway that served as our emergency waiting area. The receptionist, a young woman who knew me well, didn’t even bat an eyelash as I skidded to a stop in front of her.
"Chiara Winslow?" I asked, my voice tight with urgency.
"Already in surgery. OR two," she answered quickly, without hesitation.
"Thanks!" I called back, already turning toward the OR.
"Lia!" A familiar voice shouted, halting me in my tracks. I turned, recognizing Fenris’s anxious face.
"Fenris!" I said, rushing toward him. "You did great getting her here so fast. She's in surgery now. I'm going in, but I'll talk to you as soon as I know anything."
"Thank you," he breathed, relief flooding his features. "I’ve been out here, dying with worry. No one would tell me anything."
"I'll be back soon." I assured him, my heart aching for the anxiety he was going through.
I scrubbed in and made my way into the sterile OR. As soon as I entered, Dr. Winslett looked up from his work, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"Nice of you to join us, Ms. Sterling," he quipped, already knowing my scent. "We’re almost done here."
"I was out of town," I explained quickly, my voice tight with concern. "But I just saw Chiara last week for her postpartum checkup, and everything seemed fine. What happened?"
Dr. Winslett glanced at me, sensing the anxiety in my tone, and softened his approach. "Nothing you could’ve predicted. Take a breath, Dahlia. Uterine Artery Pseudoaneurysm. It's rare, but it happens. Her wolf wouldn’t have sensed it until the bleeding started."
I closed my eyes for a moment, relief mixing with dread. "So when she started hemorrhaging, her wolf couldn’t handle the blood loss?"
"Exactly," he said, confirming my fears. "But you got her here in time. She’s going to be fine. I’ll tell her mate to quit worrying. If he’d brought her in sooner, we could’ve avoided some of this."
I chuckled, a sense of calm sweeping over me. "If I know Chiara, she probably downplayed the problem and begged him not to bring her in. And knowing Fenris, he would’ve listened." I let out a light sigh, relieved that I wasn’t about to be giving them the worst news.
Dr. Winslett snorted. "Thank Goddess you made him come. She was close to losing her uterus, but she'll heal now, and they’ll be able to have more pups eventually. I’m done here, but we’ll give her another blood transfusion to boost her wolf’s healing."
"Thank you, Dr. Winslett." I leaned in to kiss his cheek in gratitude, catching him off guard. He blushed, something I wasn’t used to seeing from him, before dropping his surgical tools in the metal tray and pulling off his gloves.
I hurried to change and go give Fenris the good news. As I passed through the crowded hallway, I grumbled to myself about being short in a world full of towering wolves. Still, it didn’t take long to spot him pacing near the end of the corridor.
He turned the moment I approached, his eyes filled with desperation. "How is she?" he asked, his hands tightening around my arms.
"She’s fine, Fenris. They're getting her settled in her room now. Come with me, I’ll stay with you until she wakes up."
"So, she’s going to be okay?" His voice was thick with concern. "We can still have pups?"
"Yes, you can still have pups," I said, doing my best to reassure him. "Though, maybe give it some time before you start planning the next litter." I tried to lighten the mood, but I could see him relax a bit.
"Yeah, of course," he chuckled, his nervous energy still apparent.
By the time we reached Chiara’s room, she was already waking up, her eyes fluttering open. Fenris rushed to her side, showering her with kisses, his relief palpable. I explained the cause of the bleeding and the blood transfusion she was receiving. She, too, voiced concerns about their future pups, but I reassured them both again.
When they seemed to settle, and Chiara’s eyes were drifting shut again, I whispered my goodbyes and promised to check in tomorrow.
On my way back to the truck, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out, seeing my dad’s name on the screen. Groaning internally, I answered, knowing one of the twins had likely called him, worried about me.
"Hi, Daddy!" I answered, using my most innocent voice.
"Dahlia, where are you? Are you okay?" His tone was panicked, making a small knot of guilt form in my chest.
"I’m fine, Daddy," I assured him. "I’m at the Crystal Moon infirmary. Chiara Winslow had an emergency, so I came to help. She’s fine, and I’m about to head back to Blood Moon."
"Thank Goddess!" he sighed in relief. "Will you call your mates to let them know, or should I?"
His obvious concern for their peace of mind irked me. I wasn’t ready to let them off the hook just yet.
"I’ll handle it, Daddy. Don’t tell them anything," I said, my annoyance clear. He knew better than to push.
"Fine," he replied, a sharp edge to his voice. "It’s your mate bond, you handle it how you see fit."
"Thanks, Daddy," I said, the annoyance melting into something softer. "Are you home? I could stop by."
"No, sweetheart," he replied with genuine warmth. "I’m visiting a friend in another pack today, but I’d love to see you another time."
"Okay, well, enjoy your visit. Love you!" I added, ready to end the call.
"Love you too, darling," he said before hanging up.
I climbed into the truck, taking a moment to catch my breath. The last week had been a whirlwind of emotions, stress, and sleepless nights. I was exhausted, but as I started the engine and drove off, I found myself thinking about Blood Moon.
When had it become home?
"It's been home since we learned our mates were there," Blue, my wolf, replied sleepily in my mind.
"Hmm. Maybe for you," I said with a wry smile, "but I think it took me longer."
"Whatever you say," she responded, sarcasm laced in her voice. "You did good today. Helping people, I mean."
"Thanks, love," I murmured, not admitting how much her approval meant.
"You're welcome!" she purred. "Now let’s go home to our mates."
"One of our mates is still on my shit list," I warned her, my voice hardening. "He doesn’t get off so easily."
Blue rolled her eyes, but she didn’t argue, her mind drifting to sleep.
The drive back to Blood Moon took a full hour, but I took my time, knowing I wasn’t as sharp without my wolf fully awake. As I pulled into the driveway, Liam rushed out the door to meet me. Had he been waiting by the window the whole time? Not that I should’ve expected less.
"Angel, I’m so sorry!" He reached for me, his hands trembling.
But I wasn’t ready for his touch. If I let him hold me, I knew I’d melt, and I wasn’t about to let him off the hook. I held up my hands to stop him.
"I’m exhausted. I need to rest. We’ll talk when I wake up," I said, my tone brooking no argument.
But a small part of me didn’t want him to worry while I slept, so I softened a little. "I’m fine. One of my patients had an emergency, needed surgery. She’s okay, and I’m heading home now."
"Shit!" He cursed, his face a mix of regret and frustration. "I should’ve given you a chance to explain. I’m so sorry."
I smiled faintly, offering him a brief moment of reassurance. "We’ll talk later, okay?" I said, turning to walk into the house, leaving him standing there, waiting for an apology he didn’t deserve.
