Logan’s POV

After our talk, once Lia and I were finally spent and wrapped around each other, I felt the shift in her emotions begin to stir. I didn’t rush her—just slowly traced my fingers along her arm, up and down, letting the silence hold until she was ready to break it.

“I want to see her,” she said at last, her voice firm, unshaken.

I didn’t even pretend to misunderstand. “No,” I replied, equally resolute.

“Logan, I need this. I need her to see that she didn’t win. That she didn’t break me… didn’t break us.” Her voice trembled just slightly, but her resolve didn’t waver. I groaned, already knowing where this was going.

“She’s not in good shape, Lia. You really don’t want to see her like that.” I tried to reason with her.

“I’m a Celtic Wolf, remember? Selene made me out of tougher stuff than you think.” Her bravado was loud and clear. Whether she believed it or not, I couldn’t argue with that—at least, not convincingly.

“Fine,” I sighed. “We’ll take you tomorrow.”

“No,” she shot back, already pulling on her jeans. “Now.”

I was momentarily distracted by the perfect curve of her backside as she bent to grab her shirt from the floor. But when I didn’t respond quickly enough, she turned, throwing me a glare that hit harder than any command.

“Fuck. Liam’s going to kill me for this,” I muttered, hauling myself out of bed.

The stench hit us the moment the heavy metal door to the lower cells creaked open—a nauseating mix of blood, sweat, and excrement. These cells were reserved only for the worst criminals—the monsters who had betrayed our pack in the most heinous ways. Rowena, after attacking an Alpha, had earned herself the deepest, darkest cell we had.

“Tell me what happened to her,” Lia said as we made our way down the corridor.

“Her trial happened about a week after the incident. It was short. Strangely short. Either she was arrogant or just plain stupid—but she never denied what she did.” I remembered that day clearly, the rage I’d swallowed down to keep from tearing her apart on the spot.

“Nikolai questioned her. If Liam or I had gotten near her, we’d have killed her. No doubt. But no matter what Nikolai said or did, her only defense was that she believed she was supposed to be our Luna.”

Lia snorted. “She’s delusional. I might actually pity her… if I didn’t loathe her so much.”

I couldn’t argue. Even now, I couldn’t fathom what had ever drawn me to her. Assuming I was ever really drawn to her. At this point, I wouldn’t put anything past that woman.

We reached the end of the hall, past the line of iron-barred cells. Rowena’s was the last—buried in the furthest corner of the dungeon, where no light reached. She had committed crimes against her Alpha… but worse, she’d hurt our Luna. That was something neither Liam nor I could ever forgive.

I held Lia close as we moved through the darkness. Our wolves could see just fine, but the thick, oppressive atmosphere ignited every protective instinct in me. She tried to appear unfazed, but I could hear her breathing through her mouth, fighting the urge to gag on the stench. As we stopped outside Rowena’s cell, I wrapped my arms around her from behind, holding her tight to my chest. I trusted Nikolai’s restraints, but I wasn’t taking chances—not with her.

Lia gasped as her eyes adjusted and took in the sight. Rowena was suspended by silver chains, her wrists torn and raw where the cuffs had bitten through flesh. Her toes barely brushed the floor. Her clothes were in tatters, torn from the lashes she’d received as part of her sentence. Most of her wounds had healed, but she would never see sunlight again. A wolf who challenged her Alpha could never be trusted.

“What… what is she doing here?” Rowena rasped, her voice dry from lack of water.

“She’s here because she is this pack’s Luna,” I growled, “and she wanted to inspect the prisoners.”

Rowena managed a pitiful growl in response.

“I came,” Lia said, stepping out of my arms and closer to the bars, “because I wanted you to see what a complete waste your efforts were.”

“It was no effort at all,” Rowena sneered. “Why would he want you when he could have had me? You’ll never be the Luna I would’ve been. Sooner or later, they’ll see it—and you’ll be in here, not me.”

My claws extended, canines descending with a snarl building in my throat. But Lia? My fierce, steady Luna remained utterly calm.

“Guess no one told you,” she said smoothly, stepping back into my arms, “that I’m a special kind of wolf. I have this convenient ability—my mates can’t lie to me when I command them not to. So I know exactly who they want—and who they don’t. If I were you, I wouldn’t count on a cell exchange program.”

Then she turned to face me, wrapping her arms around my neck and rising on her toes. Her kiss was deep and possessive, claiming me in the way only she could. Rowena snarled from the shadows, but we didn’t give a damn.

When we finally broke apart, we looked at each other with unguarded love. I swept Lia into my arms and turned to leave. She had gotten what she came for.

But then I stopped, a thought forming.

She wasn’t the only one who could give commands.

Turning back, I stared at Rowena’s broken, dangling form. “Tell me the truth,” I ordered, my voice thick with Alpha authority. “Did I really sleep with you—or did you drug me, like last time?”

She clenched her jaw, fighting it—but my command could not be denied.

“I drugged your wine,” she admitted, each word dripping with reluctant truth. “You passed out before anything really happened.”

I hissed in disgust. “From what I’ve heard, I didn’t miss much.”

“That’s definitely not true,” Lia said with a mischievous giggle, her laughter making my cock twitch like it always did.

I growled playfully, beginning to lead her away, but Rowena’s voice slithered through the darkness once more.

“Your last Alpha cast you aside,” she called. “It’s only a matter of time before they do too.”

Lia muttered under her breath, shaking her head. “Don’t do it, Lia. Take the high road. Let it go…”

She stepped toward the cell door. I moved to hold her back, thinking she was ready to leave—but she slipped from my reach, turned abruptly, and with a swirl of her arm, she unleashed a blast of force so powerful it cracked the air.

It struck Rowena dead in the chest. Her skull slammed into the stone wall with a sickening crunch, and she went limp, unconscious in her chains.

“She’ll definitely feel that when she wakes up,” Lia smirked, strolling back into my embrace. “Now we can go.”

“Feel better, doll?” I asked as we reached the top landing.

Before she could answer, we ran straight into my brother, standing there with his arms crossed and fire in his eyes.

“What the fuck were you thinking, taking her down there?” he snapped. “It’s dangerous as hell!”

Lia slipped out of my arms and into his, pressing her hand to his chest. “If you’re going to be mad, be mad at me. I insisted on seeing her.”

Smart wolf. She knew he couldn’t stay mad at her long. He buried his face in her hair, but his glare found its way back to me.

“You didn’t have to agree,” he grumbled.

“Right,” I snorted. “Let’s talk again when you successfully tell her no.”

Lia reached for my hand, pulling me into their circle. “Enough, boys,” she said. “We’ve got bigger problems to deal with.”

“Like what?” we asked in unison.

She grinned. “We’ve got to tell your mother she has a ceremony to plan.”

“Fuck,” we groaned together.
