**Erika’s POV**

The Alpha wanted to see me?

That didn’t make any sense. The Alpha didn’t just summon people, especially not someone like me. I wasn’t important. I wasn’t that high-ranking. I was just Erika, the daughter of the widowed Lady Althea who was taken into the pack house since her father's properties had been burnt.

The girl who snuck out of etiquette lessons to ride horses and spar with the guards, the girl my mother constantly scolded for being too wild, too reckless, too much.

My mother’s expression remained unreadable, but I saw the way her fingers clenched slightly against the fabric of her dress, the way her posture stiffened ever so slightly.

“Are you certain it was the Alpha himself who sent for us?” she asked with a raise of her brows.

The servant nodded quickly. “Yes, my lady. The Alpha’s guard delivered the message himself. He was very clear when he requested you and your daughter.”

I glanced at my mother, searching her face for some kind of explanation, but she gave away nothing. For just a heartbeat, I thought I saw hesitation or worry, even, but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared.

“Did the guard say why?” she pressed.

The servant shook his head. “No, my lady. Only that the Alpha wishes to see you both immediately.”

Immediately. My stomach twisted.

That didn’t sound good at all.

My mother exhaled, smoothing down the front of her gown with slow, deliberate movements. “Very well,” she finally said. “Tell the guard we’ll be there shortly.”

The servant bowed and scurried off, leaving only silence in his wake.

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. “Mom,” I murmured, hesitating. “What do you think he wants?”

She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she turned toward me, really looking at me in a way that made my skin prickle. As if she was trying to figure something out. As if she wanted to say something, but for once in her life, didn’t know how.

Finally, she spoke. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “But we’ll find out soon enough.”

Then, without another word, she started walking toward the castle.

I hesitated for only a moment before following, my heart slamming against my ribs.

What could the Alpha possibly want with me?

The walk to the Alpha’s chambers felt like it stretched on for miles. My heart pounded by the time we reached the massive wooden doors, guarded by two towering Lyncan.

They stepped aside without a word, pushing the doors open.

The Alpha’s quarters were as intimidating as the man himself. It had high ceilings, walls lined with books and weapons, and a massive fireplace crackling softly in the corner.

The Alpha sat behind a wooden desk, his sharp, calculating eyes scanning a stack of papers.

He looked up as we entered, and a shiver crawled down my spine.

“Ah, Erika,” he said in a deep rumbling voice. “And Lady Althea. Thank you for coming.”

My mother dipped into a graceful curtsy immediately. I scrambled to do the same, though mine lacked the same effortless grace.

“Of course, Alpha,” my mother said smoothly. “We came as soon as we received your summons.”

The Alpha leaned back slightly. I studied his face, trying to read it but his expression gave nothing away. “I’m sure you’re wondering why I called for you.”

“Yes, Alpha,” my mother replied.

His gaze shifted to me then, ", I’ve been watching you, Erika.”

My stomach dropped as I heard those words.

Watching me?

Panic surged through me. Had he seen me sneaking out? Had he heard about the sparring matches? Did he know about the time I nearly broke that noble boy’s nose when he got too handsy at a gathering?

"Allow me to apologize on behalf of my daughter's behavior Alpha Corvin, " my mother hastily said.

“You’re strong,” he continued, his voice calm, unaffected by the way my thoughts were spiraling all the while ignoring my mother's hasty apology. “Stronger than you realize. And I think it’s time you started training properly.”

I blinked. Certain I had misheard. “Training?”

The Alpha nodded. “Yes. You have potential, Erika. Real potential. And I’d like to see you reach it.”

I could only stare.

Me?

The girl who barely made it through an hour of etiquette lessons without fidgeting? The one who was constantly being reminded to act ladylike and not like some common warrior?

My mother, however, did not look nearly as pleased.

“Alpha,” she said carefully, “while I am honored by your interest in my daughter, I must remind you that she is a noblewoman. Her duties lie in securing a suitable mate and upholding the traditions of our pack.”

The Alpha arched an eyebrow. “And who says she can’t do both?”

My mother opened her mouth, likely to argue but the Alpha lifted a hand, cutting her off effortlessly.

“I understand your concerns, Lady Althea,” he said, his tone calm but firm. “But Erika’s strength is a gift. One that shouldn’t be wasted. I might have as well said that my daughter Elara should not train but she is." There was a pause. “I’m not asking for your permission. I’m telling you what will happen.”

The air in the room shifted. My mother’s jaw tightened. She didn’t argue, didn’t protest.

She couldn’t.

The Alpha’s word was law.

“Starting tomorrow,” he continued as if there had been no tension at all, “Erika will begin training with the Beta. He’ll assess her skills and help her reach her full potential.”

I felt like I was dreaming.

Training with the Beta? The second strongest wolf in the pack? That was… everything.

No more lessons on how to pour tea properly, no more lectures on how to be the perfect lady. This was my chance to prove to everyone that I wasn’t just some noblewoman meant to be paraded around until I found a mate.

“Thank you, Alpha,” I said, barely able to keep the excitement from my voice.

A faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips. “Don’t thank me yet, Erika.” His gaze darkened slightly, like a warning and somehow I began to overthink everything.

What if this was not as good as it seemed?
