Peter's POV

As soon as I saw her, I felt a jolt in my chest. She stood among the seven potential spies, her eyes flashing with defiance, her posture tense but composed. The suspicions of those in charge of selection had brought them here, but when my eyes met hers, something felt off.

It was like I recognized her, but that was impossible. I had never seen her before. Yet, there was something about her that drew me in. I studied her closely, taking in the sharp lines of her face, the way her eyes scanned the room, searching for escape routes and angles. She was calculating, assessing.

I couldn't ignore the strange pull I felt toward her. It was like an unseen force had taken hold of my chest, making it hard to breathe. It didn't make sense. I had never met this woman before.

The King spoke, his deep voice commanding attention. She bowed slightly, her voice steady. "If it pleases you, Your Majesty."

There was something about the way she held herself, the control in her voice, that made my unease grow. And then, she turned to me.

For a fleeting moment, our eyes met, and I could have sworn I'd seen those eyes before. But where?

*+*+*+*+*+*

The duel was supposed to be a test, a way to determine whether she was a spy or just an innocent person in the wrong place at the wrong time.

At first, I didn't think much of it. But as we began to fight, doubts started to creep in. She moved with a precision that was uncanny. Her footwork, her defensive positioning, and her counterattacks all seemed familiar.

It was as if I'd trained her before, fought alongside her. But that was impossible. The person who came to mind was Tiana, someone I'd trained with, fought with.

And yet, this woman wasn't Tiana. She was faster, sharper, and more controlled. She had the same calculated movements, but they were honed, refined by experience and survival and she had a stronger physique that made fighting come more naturally for her.

But it was impossible. Tiana was gone.

As we fought, I started to feel something strange. It was the same feeling I had when I first saw her. I couldn't explain it, but it was like there was a connection between us.

When the fight was over, the King was very suspicious. He thought she was a spy. And I have to admit, I thought that might be true too. She was very good at fighting, better than anyone I had ever seen before.

But as I thought about it more, I started to feel like something wasn't right. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I felt like there was more to her story than she was letting on.

So when she was taken away to her room, I found myself thinking about her a lot. I wanted to know more about her, and I wanted to help her.

During breakfast, I noticed that there was a lot of food left over. There were sweet treats and pastries that the nobles hadn't eaten. Normally, this food would have been thrown away or taken by the servants.

But for some reason, I decided to take the food and put it on a tray. I didn't think much about it, I just did it. And then I found myself walking to her room, carrying the tray of food.

I'm not really sure why I did it. I just felt like I wanted to help her, and I thought maybe she might be hungry.

When I walked into the room, I saw her sitting up straight, her food plate untouched beside her. She looked up at me, and I could tell she was being careful.

I put the tray of food down and shrugged. "I thought you might not like what they gave you," I said.

She looked at the food, then back at me. "Thank you," she said slowly. Then she asked, "But why did you bring me food?"

I didn't answer her question. Instead, I picked up one of the sweet cakes and took a bite. We just sat there for a moment, not saying anything.

Finally, I spoke up. "I don't think you're a spy," I said.

She looked surprised. "Oh, wow. That's a relief," she said.

I watched her reaction, then leaned against the wall and crossed my arms. "The person who taught you how to fight... I think they might have learned from me."

She sat up a little straighter, and I could tell she was being careful about what she said. "That's possible," she said.

"Why do you think that?" she asked.

"Because you're very good at fighting," I said. "And I've only taught a few people how to fight like that. One of them is dead."

She didn't say anything, but I could tell she was reacting to what I said. I could see it in her eyes.

"Who was the person you're talking about?" she asked.

I smiled a little. "Tiana," I said.

She looked surprised again. "She was the one who was supposed to marry the Alpha," I said. "But then she was accused of trying to poison him."

Something changed in her eyes. She was reacting to what I said. "Do you really think she did it?" she asked.

I didn't answer right away. I was thinking about it.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “But it doesn’t matter. The past is the past.”

And it was.

No matter how much I had questioned it over the years, no matter how much I had wanted to believe there had been more to the story—nothing would change.

Tiana was gone. Amara was gone. My son was gone. And I was still here, going through everyday with only memories to keep me company.

She seemed like she wanted to ask me something else, but she didn't. Instead, she asked, "Do you think the King will believe I'm not a spy?"

I let out a breath. "I'm not sure," I said.

She sighed a little, then nodded. "Get some rest," I told her, turning to leave.
