Rebirth Of The Rejected Luna Chapter 142: Only You Can Do It

**Carlo's POV**

The word hit me like a ton of bricks, and I froze. Corvin, the master manipulator, had always been a step ahead of everyone, but this was different. Betrayal? What had the Luna and Lady Althea done that could possibly make them deserve this?

Before I could ask, Corvin’s eyes snapped to mine, sharp and cold, like a warning. I hesitated but then spoke anyway. “The sins of a mother shouldn’t fall on the child,” I said, testing the waters, even though saying it out loud felt wrong.

Corvin’s face hardened, but there was something almost like thoughtfulness in the way he said, “That kid is asking way too many questions. She’s too dangerous.”

I swallowed, the realization hitting me all at once. Erika was right in the crossfire, just like her mom had been. But this time, Corvin wasn’t going to mess it up. He wouldn’t let Erika live, wouldn’t let her grow or figure anything out. He’d make sure she was gone.

“Does she really have to be eliminated?” I asked, the words tasting bitter like I didn’t even want to say them, but I had to. I needed to know.

Corvin tilted his head, narrowing his eyes. “Since when did you start questioning who needs to be eliminated or not?”

The words were a cold slap to the face, and I felt a sudden jolt of fear. Fear for Erika. Fear for myself. I had always followed Corvin’s orders without question, and always been loyal to the pack. But now, with Erika’s life hanging in the balance, everything felt different.

His eyes were sharp like he could see straight through me. For the first time in a long time, I felt uneasy in his presence. I’d always known Corvin was ruthless and calculating and a real predator. But this? This felt different. It wasn’t just about power. It felt personal.

And I was in way too deep to walk away now.

His stare softened a little, but it didn’t make the chill down my back go away. “So, Carlo…” he said, his voice calm, almost too calm. The next words came slowly like he was trying to make me feel them. “Where does your loyalty lie?”

My throat went dry.

Loyalty. I’d never questioned it before. I’d always been loyal to the pack, to Corvin, to the Alpha. But now? With Erika’s life at risk and everything he was asking of me? I couldn’t shake the feeling that this time, my loyalty was being tested in a way I didn’t know how to answer.

“I’ve always been loyal to you, Alpha,” I said, my voice steady, though my insides churned. I couldn't afford to show weakness, not now. I was loyal, always had been. That was my identity. But Erika... Erika was pulling at the very core of me in a way I never thought possible.

Corvin looked at me for a moment, like he was judging every word and move I made. He leaned back in his chair, a creepy grin on his face. “Good. That’s what I expected.” His eyes got darker like he was thinking something more than just being amused. “But loyalty is a fragile thing, huh, Carlo?"

I swallowed hard, keeping my eyes on him. I couldn’t let him see how much this was messing with my head.

He spoke again, quieter now like he was telling me something secret. “Erika…” He said her name like it didn’t matter. “She’s too smart for her own good. I can see it in her eyes—the doubts, the questions. She’s already starting to figure things out, more than she should. More than is safe.”

My fists tightened, and my chest felt like it was going to burst. “What are you saying, Alpha?” The words came out shaky. I already knew what he meant, but I needed him to say it. I needed to hear him say it.

Corvin's lips curled into a dangerous smile. "I’m saying she’s too smart for her own good. She’s a threat, Carlo. And you," he leaned forward, his eyes darkening, "you are the only one who can deal with her."

My heart stopped, and for a moment, everything around me blurred. “What do you mean?” My voice was barely a whisper, thick with disbelief.

Corvin didn’t need to say anything more. The look in his eyes was enough to send a cold shiver down my spine. He was giving me the task, the responsibility. To kill her.

"She’s your mate," Corvin said, his voice low, almost conversational, as if he were discussing the weather. "Only you can do it. No one else. She trusts you. She’ll listen to you. That’s why it has to be you. You’re the one who can get close enough. You’re the one who can eliminate her without question."

The world around me felt unsteady suddenly. Erika was standing on the edge of a cliff and I was being told to push her over. The burden of what I had to do felt like a stone pressing down on my chest, threatening to crush me.

I struggled to breathe, each inhale feeling harder than the last. I had to calm myself, to push the panic away. I needed to think. Erika meant everything to me. The thought of losing her, of causing her harm, twisted my insides, like something sharp was turning inside me.

“Please,” I whispered, though I could hardly hear my own voice. Even if Erika had to die— which I didn't want, I could not be the one to shed her blood. “There has to be another way.”

Corvin’s gaze hardened, and the softness in his features vanished. His eyes narrowed as he leaned closer, his voice turning cold and deliberate. “There is no other way, Carlo. Not for her. She’s too dangerous, too smart, and she knows too much. You want to live, you want to have a future, don’t you? Then you will do this. You will eliminate her. You will be the one to protect everything we’ve built.”
