***Present***

**Tiana’s POV**

My fingers began to tremble uncontrollably, tears brimming at the corners of my eyes. It felt so real, like I had been present when my mother— no Erika's mother had been beheaded by the Alpha. What on earth had she done to deserve such a cruel fate.

"What did she do?"

"She poisoned the Luna," the old woman said without flinching.

"What, why? She doesn't seem like someone who can do that."

"Of course, it was not true." The old woman rolled her eyes, walking to a small stool opposite me. She sat down gingerly and sighed, shaking her head and letting out another heavy sigh. "She was framed for poisoning the Luna."

"By who?"

"You had not figured it out in the letter you wrote me," she said. "But you got a confession from a servant who testified against her."

"So you have no idea why?"

"Of course I do," she chuckled wryly. "You see, you Erika are a special child. Born under a special constellation. You were destined for greatness."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, my heart hammering against my ribs. A prophecy? A constellation? What did any of this have to do with Erika? With me?

I could still feel the phantom sensation of my mother’s—no, Erika’s mother’s—blood splattering across my skin, the metallic scent thick in my nose. My fingers trembled as I clenched them into fists, trying to steady myself.

“What… what do you mean I was destined for greatness?” My voice wavered, barely above a whisper.

The old woman—Grandma, as Erika had once called her—sighed, settling more comfortably onto the stool. Her eyes, though old and weary, gleamed with something unreadable.

“There was a prophecy,” she said simply. “One that spoke of the Luna’s first child. A child born under a rare constellation, destined for power beyond imagination.”

I frowned, shaking my head. “But the Luna’s first child was—”

“Elara,” the old woman finished for me. “Or so everyone thought.”

A cold chill slithered down my spine. I had seen Elara before. The girl was a mirror of Erika, with the same sharp features and piercing eyes, but there was something softer about her. Something sheltered.

“Elara is Corvin’s daughter,” I said slowly. “How could I be—”

“You are not Corvin’s child.”

The old woman’s words cut through me like a blade.

For a moment, I could only stare at her. The room suddenly felt smaller, the air pressing against me, suffocating.

“What?” I breathed.

She leaned forward, her gaze never leaving mine. “You, Erika, are the daughter of the Alpha of Beaumont City. The true heir to that land.”

I jerked back as if she had struck me. “That’s not possible. I—I was raised as part of Corvin’s pack—”

“As an orphan,” she corrected. “Taken in by the Luna. But the truth is much darker than that.”

I shook my head. “No. No, that doesn’t make sense. If I was—if Erika was the Alpha’s daughter, why would Corvin let her live?”

The old woman exhaled deeply, folding her hands in her lap. “Because the Luna was his fated mate.”

I stilled. My thoughts screeched to a halt.

“What?”

“Alpha Corvin was not always the ruler of Stormville City,” she murmured. “He was once nothing more than a rogue warrior. A man without a pack, without a home. But he had power. Ambition. And with an army of rogues at his command, he set his sights on Beaumont City.”

The name sent a shiver through me.

Beaumont City.

I didn’t remember much about it—just hazy memories of stone walls and golden fields, of voices calling my name in the wind. But those could have easily been dreams.

“How did he take over the city?” I asked hesitantly.

The old woman’s expression darkened. “He did what all power-hungry Alphas do. He killed the ruling Alpha and slaughtered everyone in his path.”

A lump formed in my throat. “Everyone?”

“Everyone,” she echoed. “Warriors, elders, civilians. The entire bloodline of the Alpha was wiped out in a single night.”

I felt sick.

I could picture it too clearly—homes burning, bodies littering the streets, blood soaking into the earth.

“If he killed the whole bloodline,” I forced out, my voice trembling, “then how did I survive?”

The old woman’s gaze softened. “Your mother hid you.”

I sucked in a sharp breath.

“She hid you with her elder sister during the attack. You were just a year old at the time—too small to fight, too young to even understand what was happening.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, my head spinning.

“But… if Corvin killed everyone, how did my mother—Erika’s mother—survive?”

The old woman sighed, rubbing her temples as if the memories weighed just as heavily on her as they did on me.

“She survived because she was his mate.”

I opened my eyes, my chest tight with disbelief. “That doesn’t make any sense. Why would the Moon Goddess mate a Luna to a monster like him?”

“She was already mated when she met him,” the old woman admitted. “She loved your father—her true mate—with all her heart. But fate is cruel, child. Corvin felt the bond between them the moment he set foot in Beaumont City, and he could not bring himself to kill her.”

A shudder ran through me.

I had heard of such things before—of second-chance mates, of unfulfilled bonds. But this… this was something else.

“He killed my father,” I whispered.

The old woman nodded.

“And my mother begged for her life,” I continued, my hands shaking.

“She did,” she confirmed. “Not just for herself, but for her sister’s family as well.”

I felt like I was going to be sick.

But now I was supposed to believe I was the heir of a fallen city? The daughter of a woman who had been forced to beg for her life?

“Then what happened?” I asked, my voice hoarse. “What did Corvin do?”

The old woman leaned back, her eyes dark with something unreadable.

“He let her live.”
