Briar

My mind raced at the implications of that but before I could question him we were rounding up a driveway that opened up to a clearing with a majestic modern cabin taking up its center. My jaw dropped as I eyed the house. What the actual fuck was going on. Carter opened my door and I slid out leaving my bag behind in the truck. His fingers twitched and he grabbed my arm facing me, his body blocked my view of the house.

“I should have explained it all sooner, but we have run out of time.” The strain on his face as he admitted those words was evident his eyes swirled with emotions.

“Explain what?” I asked desperate to know what was going on, what caused this storm brewing inside him.

“I wish I had the time to tell you everything, but we don’t have that luxury, and we are already running late,” I went to reach for him but he stepped aside his hand falling from my forearm, the storm in his eyes replaced by an unmovable hardened mask as he faced the house.

“Let’s get this over with,” was all he said and moved forward and there was nothing else I could do but follow as he strode up the porch steps. He rang the doorbell as I reached his side. What in the actual fuck was going on. An older woman answered with her dull brown hair with traces of grey tied up in a tight bun and wearing a crisp grey maid uniform with a white collar and white folds around the sleeves.

“Sheriff Carter,” she greeted.

“Olivia,” he said curtly, giving her a nod.

She glanced at me but said nothing.

“Master Clyde is waiting in the den,” she let Carter know before she turned and walked away.

The massive open plan of the living area was breathtaking however seemed devoid of the feel of ever being lived in. I followed Carter down a hall off the living space before we came to a door and he knocked.

“Come in,” a voice rumbled from the other side. Carter turned the knob and pushed the door open and stepped inside. I followed him in, determined to know what all this shit was about. Carter stepped to the side as I entered, letting me in and shut the door behind me as I came face to face with the creepy guy from the fair. My eyes widened as Carter walked in and walked to stand next to the desk with his hands behind his back. His face was unreadable as the man grinned at me as his eyes flickered with amusement.

“I see you brought our guest, Miss Anderson, have a seat,” He motioned to a few plush chairs.

I crossed my arms under my breasts and narrowed my eyes at him not breaking his stare zeroed in on me.

“I’d rather stand, what's this all about anyway?” I said as that bloom in my chest stretched throughout my body itching under my skin.

He chuckled.

“She’s feisty, I see what you mean,” his eyes stayed on me, as I glared at him. What had Carter told him about me?

“And defiant I see. It’s not everyday a female is so…interesting.” Clyde said with a smirk that promised his words . “As for what this is all about? This is about you Briar…or is it Adelaide?” My eyes widened and I suppressed a noise of anger that pooled in my throat. I couldn’t help but tear my eyes from Clyde to Carter glaring accusations. Apparently this jackass knew a lot about me, from somewhere. Carter didn’t meet my eyes, instead he met Clyde's glance at him briefly before staring ahead. It was like he knew exactly what was happening and didn’t give two flying fucks.

“I guess it depends on who's asking,” I snapped, anger roiled around my insides and I shook my head to help clear it away enough to focus.

“Clyde Brogen, this is my town. Nobody stays here without my say so. I’ve granted you an extended stay only because of who your father is. I’ve had Carter here keeping a very close eye on you since you came here. He inhaled deeply. He glanced at Carter.

“Seems he's been enjoying some fruits of his job…maybe he's taken this assignment too seriously.” he said as he spared Carter an appraising glance. Carter’s eyes stared at a spot on the wall behind me as if I wasn’t even there as he responded.

“I always take my job seriously.” was his only comment.

“That you do,” Clyde agreed with a grin.

“Tell me Adelaide, what brought you to my town?”

I really didn’t like this creep and apparently my secret was out. He had shared his findings with his ‘boss.’ The betrayal coursed through me like knives stabbing at my insides.

“I don’t go by that name anymore. My uncle left me his place, and his business. I was in a bind and needed somewhere to go. It was my only option”

“What kind of bind? You say he was your uncle?”

“The kind where an egotistical ass hat thinks his girlfriend is his property. Yes, Jake was my uncle.” refusal would do me no good here I realized so I gave him the vague truth.

“What is this some delusional small town mob boss act?” I snapped.

“Carter, tell me do you know of this brother to Jake she is speaking of?”

“No,” Carter answered. “But Martha and Henry claim her as their granddaughter,” he added dryly. His eyes briefly diverting to the man before staring ahead. My jaw dropped. How could he keep that from me? Why would Martha and Henry claim me so warmly if I wasn’t who they thought me to be.

Amusement flared in Clyde’s eyes again.

“Seems we have a bit of a mystery, don’t we, Miss Anderson. Seems my Sheriff has done his job well.”

He looked at Carter, who just stared ahead. Satisfaction was the only thing that graced this dickbag’s features. So everything between us was nothing to Carter. He was playing me the entire time. My heart tore in agony. I was so incredibly stupid. I was breaking on the inside; however, that bloom under my skin merged with my cold fury as I stared at this man who thought he had the right to uproot me from what Uncle Jake left me. He could go fuck himself. What crazy, asinine cultish bullshit was this place?
