**Carter**

*Five days later:*

My boss called me. On Friday morning, which was odd.

“Hey, boss?”

“I need to meet your charge.”

“Oh?”

“I just need to see her for my own eyes, before I set this annoyance  to bed.”

So Creedon was still pushing. I let out a breath. “I’ll take her to the harvest festival. You see her then what?”

“I decided if I’m willing to keep her here. With this Alpha breathing down my neck, I don’t want problems. I will have to cave sooner or later.”

“I thought I still had time to coax her wolf?”

“You do, but I want to see what all the fuss is about.”

“You think she's the woman they are looking for?”

“I know what she came into town wreaking of, as much as you do. I’ll overlook you not telling me about that tidbit of information for now. After I meet her, we will have a long talk.”

I closed my eyes and cursed silently. I didn’t want him anywhere near her. I suddenly realized what that said about how I felt about my alpha. I didnt’ trust him with a ten foot pole where Briar was concerned. 

“Understood. Next Saturday at the fall festival,” was all I said, arguing with him about the it would just prove how important Briar was to me and make her a pawn. I left work early leaving my paperwork to fill out tomorrow. I needed to see her. My mind was running over a million different situations. I wanted to hold her in my arms to remind myself she was still with me. I needed to feel her warmth against me. I about ran right into Mazzie on my way out.

“Easy Carter, what's the rush? Is something wrong?”

I glanced around us and nodded to the locker room to gain some privacy.

“Alpha wants to meet Briar, he knows I omitted some information about her. I have a feeling its going to come back and bite me in the ass.”

“Shit!”

“Double shit because Jake always warned me not to let him know who was important to me, said he’d use it against me. Now by trying to protect her I’ve put a target on her.”

“Fuck Car, there’s something Jake must know that the rest of us don’t.”

“I’d put money on it Maz, I just don’t know what it is. I thought I knew the man and he had a whole family on the otherside of the country.”

“Your sure she’s his?”

“No, but he raised her like his own. Briar thinks he was her uncle, I don’t know of any brothers he's got. Martha claims her. It seems like the only logical explanation. Not to mention Lana said her aura is big, she had to come from more dominate stock then me or you.”

“That dosen’t say much Carter, look at yourself. Your parents aren’t even dominant.”

Mazzie was right, there were so many secrets, and none of it was making sense.

“I’ve gotta get her riding by this weekend, if things go to shit…”

“I get it Car, Lana and I have your back. Just slow down and feel it out at first. Don’t prompt her or he will know it. Just make sure there are witnesses so he dosen’t pull anything extreme.”

What Mazzie said made sense, and the festival was perfect for that. I could ensure we were surrounded by friends.

“It’ll work out Carter, just do your job and I’m not talking about the one we do here. Take care of her at all costs.”

“I will Its just, walking away from everything…”

“If it comes to that I’ll make sure your family understands. I know thats hard but at the end of the day you can’t loose her, it will ruin you both.”

I nodded she was right. “I’m going home, if something happens, take care of Rosie and Tucker.”

She put her hand over her heart. “I promise, now go home to your girl before you loose your shit. Your a loose cannon right now. Don’t let that get back to him.”

I nodded pushing my emotions deep inside my wolf. He would hold onto them for me till I got home.

An hour later I unlocked the door and walked into the house. It smelled of pasta and tomato sauce and garlic bread. I beelined for the kitchen and wrapped my arms around her from behind pulling her away from the stove as I burrowed my face into her neck. She paused for just a moment discarding the spoon on the counter and turning in my arms. She cupped my face, her green eyes looking up at me with concern.

“Whats wrong Carter?”

I just wrapped my arms around her pulling her flush against me. “It’s just been a hard day,” was all I could come up with since I couldn’t tell her.

“Wanna talk about it?”

I shook my head no, and let her scent relax me. She searched my eyes, but I didn’t want her to see so I just fucking kissed her. I couldn’t stop the desperation that kiss conveyed. She kissed me back and I realized she needed that connection as much as I did which just sent me into a frenzy as I lifted her up placing her ass on the island as my hands roved over her body. I needed this woman desperately.

Her legs wrapped around me, her fingers tangling into my hair. I had her tee pulled over her head without a thought, my mouth kissing down her chest when a soft knock came at the door. Her body came straight to alert, but it took me a moment to register as I was lost in the need for her skin against mine.

“Carter.” she murmured as I kissed back up her neck as I panted. The knock sounded again louder this time.

“Carter!” she yanked my hair back forcing me to look into her eyes. “Someones at the door.” 

I registered her startled expression. I blinked before I pierced together what she was saying. 

I pulled her off the island setting her bare feet on the tiled floor and handed her, the shirt I had tossed aside. 

“Stay here,”She was putting on her shirt as I strode half cocked to the door. Looking out the peep hole I yelled to Briar. “It’s just Amber,” when I glanced back I saw her physically relax. I opened the door and looked down at her.

“You owe me!” She passed me the baby who was almost one as the other two ran inside the house.

“Uncle Carter! We get to stay with you tonight!”

Amber grinned. “Have fun!”

“Really Amber tonight?”

“Yes you promised, its date night and their Auntie canceled on me so I’m calling in my favor.” She smiled conivingly.

“I ran my hand through my hair gathering my will to attempt a protest when briar came up behind me wrapping her arms around my waist and settling her cheek into my shoulder.

“Oh, good your here!” Amber smiled at Brair warmly. She looked from one of us to the other and smirked our mussed hair and Brair’s swollen lips no doubt a sign of what had just been going on.

“I guess we have your horde for the evening?” Briar asked. 

Amber grinned. “Yeah Carter owes me one don’t you?” 

I could only nod or risk amber telling Briar I had delayed her power.

Amber looked at Briar over my shoulder as she spoke. “They have their PJs and everything in their bags she pulled a diaper bag off her shoulder  and handed it to me. “Don’t let this man fool you he knows how to change a diaper.” Amber pointed out. “It’ll be great practice!” she yelled over her shoulder as she walked out the door. I blinked at what she was implying.

Briar chuckled glancing at the little one now resting on my hip. “We got it Amber, I just cooked dinner they will be taken care of.” she promised. “Now go have some fun.” she told the mom. Whose eyes lit up as she waved from the mini van.

I scowled at Briar who just gave me a beaming smile taking the kid out of my hands.

“Whos hungry!” she asked and there went my night.
