Her CEO Stalker and Her Second Chance Mate Chapter 120

Briar

I bypassed the guys and bee-lined it to my office. I sat in my chair as I waited for the arcane computer to load, I’d have to have Misty suggest an updated system. My mind swam in those mear moments but it was long enough for my thoughts to go to Carter. I was infuriated at him, yet at the same time I missed him so terribly I wanted to scream. Two tears fell and as I swiped them away the office door opened. Byron caught me but I tried to cover by clearing my throat and blinking.

“Ya ok Briar?” he asked, stuck like a deer in the headlights on the threshold. It was as if every neuron in him was suddenly fixated on me.

I rubbed my eyes.

“Just something in my eyes,” I lied. His eyes narrowed, he wasn’t buying what I was trying to sell him.

“Listen,” he said as he closed the door behind him. “If you're in some kind of trouble, the boys and I have your back, whatever you need.”

I cleared my throat.

“I’m not in any more trouble than any other day, but I do think we need to look into hiring someone to take over services. I have some personal things to attend to and now that we are caught up we have the funds to bring someone in to do the bit of help I’ve been doing. You guys know the people here and I respect that you may have a few options that would be agreeable to you all. Of course I want to interview and ensure I agree with you guys but at the end of the day whomever it is has to work for all of us. This way I can work from home and do the scheduling, ordering  and marketing. If done right I think we can exceed the business this place had before Jake passed.” I said and I was 100% bullshitting myself through this conversation.

“I have a nephew that might be right for the job but I’ll ask the others and let you pick from the prospects that are interested,” he explained. I nodded but he was looking at me too hard as he went quiet.

“I’ll still come in a few days a week to make sure everything is running smoothly,” I promised, trying to ease his mind. I had decided on my way here I needed to give myself the time to focus on these secrets. I apparently needed to learn more about this place and the people that inhabited it. I was pretty sure that everything I needed to know started and ended with Jake. Whatever was in this fucking letter was going to alter my life and I just couldn‘t handle that right now. Not without Carter, maybe ever. What I could do was go through his things and try to find the corner piece of the puzzle amidst the chaos of my life. Look for clues that would tell me what I was dealing with here. I’d have to press Martha eventually. At some point the truth had to come out.

When Byron left I looked out my office window across the bay…every man had his eyes on me…great…Just what I needed more entitled assholes. Deep down I knew these men weren’t like that…hell, I couldn’t even bring myself to believe Carter was like that. Maybe that was my flaw that had led me down the path I was on now, I had always tried to see the best in people and that mindset had most certainly been a flaw in my character when it came to Creedon. I saw potential, but I had been to dumb to realize that that fucker was too far gone. I looked within myself as I glanced down the line of men. I couldn’t bring myself to see them as the enemy. What I needed to do right now was work so I pulled up the calendar and slotted several services into my time for today.
