Her CEO Stalker and Her Second Chance Mate Chapter 9

She had slept restlessly, the strangled cry that escaped her reinforced my want to crush whoever this asinine piece of  shit was, and I would, too. Just like so many men before him, I’d crush him like a dung beetle. She confused me. She came across as human to all of my senses, yet she also presented signs of rejection; though, that could be confused with the plethora of traumas she must have endured by the hands of this delinquent poor excuse for an Alpha. In the grand scheme of things, none of that mattered. Human or wolf, as she walked out of the bathroom, makeup covering her bruised and swollen face, I saw a warrior. I respected that, but she couldn’t hide the acrid scent of the deviant Alpha that leached off her. It would take time for his scent to dissipate, but it was yet another sign of what was forced upon her. I couldn’t come right out and ask as she didn’t seem to know anything. It would be a burden she would have to bear unwittingly for the time being.

Some alphas still tried to control and lay some sort of claim on their rejected mates; they became unbalanced. Unhinged Alphas were dangerous creatures and needed to be neutralized. I played the game with her, waiting for his name, just to be sure she would be safe before I went hunting. She wasn’t the first female I had found in dire straits, and she wouldn’t be the last. It seemed to be my calling.

I must say, there was something about her; something quizzical and refreshing. She reminded me of someone dear to me. Someone long gone, because she had no one to save her either. I had been a young idiot once and failed to be there to protect the one meant to be  everything to me. Since then, I began to look for the signs in every woman I came across. Dev had been a lesson I wished I hadn’t had to learn. That lesson, however, has saved dozens of women since. Her loss would not be in vain.

I watched as she came out of the convenience store, the fingers of her right hand twitched. The same side where she hid the knife I had given her, hidden away in her boot. I would give her a few lessons on how to handle it effectively before we parted ways. She seemed to know a thing or two, but one couldn’t be too careful. I had to hope it would be enough to keep her safe. Someone had done a number on this girl. Who scared someone so strong so bad? Regardless, she was determined to survive; leaving her previous life behind, willing to let someone who looked like me be her savior. Just like all people, bikers could be both good and bad. Fate had a funny way of leading the wounded sheep to the wolf who wouldn’t eat them alive, as in my case.

As she got closer, she held up a bag of gummy worms, her maroon lips in a mocking grin. I had to chuckle; she had discovered my weakness for sweets. While she still nibbled on jerky, I had devoured the candy, and we had run out. She had kept the bag in her hand, pulling one out at every stop, she fed them to me. Hands-free snacking? Who was I to object? It reminded me of a little kid trying to share with an adult, you just couldn’t say no. Between my belly full of gummy worms and her jerky nibbling, we were making good time with minimal stops, and we would be to this lawyer in no time. Whoever this uncle of hers was, he had helped raise her right. Even after her ordeal, she didn’t let it consume her. Her eyes were on tomorrow, and though I couldn’t fight her future demons, I’d make sure the one that threatened her would come to an end.

She hopped on, tearing open the new package, and offering me one. I snickered before grabbing it with my teeth, to the confusion of onlookers, before I sped off. I swear I felt her smile on my back even through my vest. It was a good sign. Her impish nature would keep her going, she would find a way forward. I sighed, content with that.

Several hours later, we found ourselves parked in a parallel space outside a downtown building in a small town. The sign read open. She patted me on the shoulder as she got off.

“You can come in if you want.” I looked at her, her eyes honed in on the door, but her body was hesitant to move forward. I suppose she could use a little support, so I nodded, got off the bike, and followed her inside.

A lady in a pantsuit sat at the front desk and eyed us.

“Adelaide Anderson. Mr. Monroe should be expecting us.” Adelaide confidently informed the receptionist, who glanced at us both but wrinkled her nose.

“Mr. Monroe is expecting you,” she drawled. “Give me one moment to prep him and have the documents in order. We also have your mother's estate to address.” She stood and went through the door behind her desk. Adelaide let out a long breath, stuffing her hands into her pockets, and pulled her hood to further cover her face.

“What's wrong, Honey?” I asked, stepping next to her.

She sighed. “I put this off longer than I should have. I didn’t want the shit they left me. I just wanted them back,” she murmured.

Guilt marred her words, but before I could say anything, the receptionist returned.

“Mr. Monroe will see you now,” she said, opening the door and ushering us into a simple office area.
