When we got home Carter let Rosie out and I put the leftovers in the fridge, I grabbed a green apple and the peanut butter along with a knife. I guess I could call it a craving, I could live on this and zesty fries with vinegar and ketchup.

Carter found me on our bed with a stack of files when he came back in. Rosie and Tucker found spots on the bed as Carter climbed in behind me, his arms wrapping around me and pulling me close as he leaned against the headboard.

“What are we looking at mate?” he asked.

“I don’t know, just yet,” I admitted opening a file I had just looked at. Carter stilled behind me.

“Niomie,” he said and I glanced at him over my shoulder. Regret etched his features. I flipped past the first picture to a list of information.

There were pictures of her, selfies with another man, a note of a divorce, the date she entered Divide, photos of her and Carter around town that made me swallow as I remembered his part in all of this. His smile, however, never met his eyes. Not like they did for me. I let a tear fall as Carter’s grip tightened around me. I closed the file and went to the next. It was of a man. Carter swallowed hard.

I could feel Carter’s anxiety rising as I moved on through the next several. Every single one similar to the first.

“What the actual fuck.” I murmured and Carter buried his face into my shoulder, I could feel tears welling against my back as anxiety coursed through the bond. He didn’t want to face this but we didn’t have time to ease into it. I snatched the last one bypassing the several in front of it.

I opened it and let out a gasp, Carter just hugged me tighter. He didn’t want to know. I slammed the file shut, my heart racing. 

“If you don’t kill my father I will,” I let him know without telling him what I saw. I don’t think I would ever shake those prone images of a woman’s body torn to pieces on the side of the road. However, deep down somewhere in my blood I knew Clyde was capable of this. It was why my mother ran, why Jake helped her, why he didn’t give a damn about her in the long run.

He may have ‘loved’ her once but he had let hate over her dismissal from his life due to his own actions consume him. She had found out who he really was and ran in order to protect the unborn child, me. In doing so she had put herself unknowing in a position that took her from anything she held dear. Rage coursed through me. Carter’s hold tightened on me. No doubt thinking the truth would cause me to walk away from it all. However, in reality it just made me want to get this fucker who had ruined both of our lives on his knees.

I turned in Carter’s arms, he sobbed into my chest and I held him.

“Do you want to cull this fucker as bad as I do?” I asked.

He nodded into my chest, his absolution clear through the bond we shared.

My fingers stopped soothing through his hair as I yanked it back forcing him to look back up at me.

“Then get it together mate, we all have parts to play in his destruction,” I hissed. I poured my strength into him as he blinked up at me. His eyelashes fluttered before I found his wolf staring back at me.

“We need you,” I told him and a deep growl emanated from Carter’s chest before his wolf winked out. I had his attention at least.

I wrapped myself around Carter and pulled us both down onto the bed. He was understandably inconsolable right now. Where I raged, he brooded. I was the daughter of a monster. I’d prove it one way or another. He let my mother die, that was one thing. Forcing my mate to unknowingly take part in his sick games was another. I’d destroy him for that alone.

“I’m going to fucking kill him,” Carter’s voice finally broke his silence.

“Hold tight my love, you will,” I murmured my absolution that he would do just that. “I want to know every despicable deed he did before we finish him,” I hissed. “I want this pack to know who their alpha really is, it will bring them to our side.”

Carter just nodded and his complacency worried me. I had until we brought it all to light to have Carter strong and seeing clearly. Right now he simply blamed himself and that most certainly wouldn’t do.
