Carter

When I got to Buck’s shop, I was seeing red. Amber had warned me, but the other shit coming through the grapevine had me livid. The anti-outsider propaganda they had been spewing had me feral. Briar wasn’t some tourist trying to stake a claim. She belonged here, and I had full intentions of shutting them down.

I strode into the office.

“Carter,” Buck addressed me, standing up and coming out from behind the desk. Buck was a burly tattooed man in his late 40s. He wasn’t responsible for Miranda and other crew’s actions, but it was his job to rein them in. I closed my eyes, I didn’t want to have to do this… however, it was necessary for her protection.

“You need to call off Miranda before she goes too far, or her and your other bitches get a very painful lesson.”

Buck chuckled darkly. “You have a lot of nerve coming here making threats, Gamma.” 

I growled and flexed my fingers urging my claws to stay put.

“That’s Beta, to you.”

“You're only a Beta out of necessity, we all know it. You don’t have the backbone to do what’s really necessary.”

“Don’t test that theory Buck, or you're gonna find yourself on your back, showing your belly.”

“Bet that pretty Alpha-stinking-reject you’re protecting likes it best that way. It’s the only proper place for a whore.”

“Watch your fucking mouth,” I snarled, the only thing keeping my claws in now was not showing my hand entirely; my reaction already a slip. “I’m doing my job, as requested, whatever it looks like to anyone else is not my concern,” I bit out.

“What I don’t get is why she’s allowed to shack up in Jake’s place, we don’t let outsiders stay, especially another Alpha’s trash. There’s got to be a reason he’s allowing her to stay. But why?”

I couldn’t let myself get baited anymore than I had, so I held my ground and bit back the possessive protectiveness running hot in my veins. Usually, this kind of bullshit didn’t bother me, I could take the jabs. What I struggled with right now were the jabs at Briar.

“That is not your concern. What you should be worried about is keeping Miranda on a leash. I’m not putting up with your crew’s bullshit. Leave Briar alone, she's off limits. Why is none of your fucking buisness.”

Buck chuckled. “Is this coming from my Alpha or his piss poor choice of a Beta? I must know.”

“Both,” I snarled, stepping closer to him. All the pent up need for protectiveness was amplified. I set loose the full force of my dominance at Buck as I stepped into his space. His eyes bugged as he fought the order to submit, his skin rippling with the urge to shift. I pressed harder, extending the limits of my dominance, and finding more to shove at him.

“Fuck,” Buck groaned, as his knees buckled. He collapsed to his knees. I shoved him with my booted foot, and he fell backwards.

“As I promised, you’ve been warned. You or any of your crew fuck with Briar and they get a lesson in what it means to go against me, and I’ll let him deal with you because your not worth my time. You're a mate beating, cheating piece of shit stain we don’t need around here. So I won’t mind handing you your ass if the situation calls for it, so be my guest; try me Buck, have it your way. But one hair on that woman’s pretty blonde head gets harmed and I’ll gut you. So you'd best put your crew on a leash before I do it myself.”

“You're choosing an outsider over pack.” he accused, finally finding his voice.

“No, I’m doing the job I was born to do. It doesn't matter if someone came before me, it’s mine now, and I aim to be the best I can be at it. So you can suck it up, follow the rules, and keep your crew in line, or you can suffer the consequences.” 

Each crew of riders had a head; Buck was the head of his crew. The job of the head was to coordinate and discipline his riders if need be. In the event of an attack, that head was their leader. The thing with Buck’s crew was that they were a wild card and didn’t coordinate with the other crews; they thought they were better. As a Beta, I often joined group crew rides for fun. Being Beta meant I didn’t have my own crew to manage and I loved having time with all the pack’s protectors, however, it had been a given since the Miranda situation. They didn’t offer and they could go fuck themselves if they thought I’d accept.

I stepped away as the door opened and Kain and Rider stepped in.

“What the fuck!” Kain said, seeing his leader sprawled on the floor. I pulled back my aura as Domino and Miranda followed. 

They were too late to come to their leader’s aide. Pathetic. Lucky for them, maybe. I shook my head pushing past them. Miranda grabbed my arm, “Carter, what’s this about?” I shook her off and kept walking. Her eyes glaring at my back with the rest of their crew. I may have broken a few rules today, but they didn’t need to know that. I’d tell on myself before word got out.

I took out my phone and typed a message to him.

Carter: Miranda was starting to brew trouble. Rumors are she had it out for my new charge. I can’t put the puzzle pieces together if she’s being tormented by Buck’s crew because Miranda is trying to mark territory that never belonged to her. So I paid Buck a visit and shut it down. I’ll let you make your own assumptions, but whatever was to come of it would have been a thorn in both of our sides. I’ll take whatever punishment you see fit if you feel I’ve overstepped my bounds.

Him: I’ll handle it this time, but if you think your charge is someone you want to vouch for as a permanent resident, she’s going to have to fight her own battles. I understand you feel she is in a vulnerable situation, at some point she’s going to have to prove herself worthy. A wolfless wolf is just a human, they won’t survive the pecking order. I’m giving you 6 months, Carter. That’s generous. If she’s not showing at least signs of emerging by then, you will be running her out.

Carter: I suspect she will emerge in time. I have a plan.

Him: You are not to neglect your other duties, pursuing this, manage your new pet on your own time.

Carter: Understood.
