The nausea was building up, I blamed the pregnancy as the culprit. The kitchen was clean now and Lana followed me around talking but I couldn’t fully hear her, my mind distracted by the presence of my wolf unhappy with Carter’s absence, anxiety prickled under my skin. The wolf’s uneasiness grated through me as we made our rounds in the livingroom righting pillows while Mazzie peeked out of the closed curtains. Carter never closed them but when he left Mazzie had made her rounds around the house blocking out the world from the inside out. The impending doom I felt cut me from the world, sat heavily with me, but I couldn’t stay still.

I glanced at Mazzie as her eyes glassed over, my heart thrumming in my chest. I didn’t recognize it for what it was but the wolf did. Mazzie shot into movement and a chill washed over me before a few moments later I found myself on my knees screaming his name from my lips. Mazzie’s and my eyes locked as Lana bent to react to my sudden hysteria.

“Do you still feel him?” Mazzie barked. Tears leaked from my eyes, and it took me a moment for me to understand what she ment before I closed my eyes praying he was still there. The bond was still intact but his side was vacant.

“Yes, but its like the dead end of a phone call,” I tried to discribe. Mazzie cursed as I looked to Lana who pulled me up off the floor. I focused on my breathing but the nausea rose in me as I ran for the downstairs bathroom and emptied my dinner into the toilet. Lana was behind me grabbing my hair up as I glanced up to Mazzie as I finished hurling my guts out.

“I think they took him,”  she said softly as my heart hammered wildly in my chest.

“What do you mean?” I stammered, forcing myself to my feet.

“He went to Jake’s place to clean up a bit before he went to town. He said they were there and then he cut me off. Undeniable rage bubbled up inside me.

“What do we do now?” Lana asked.

Mazzie’s eyes shifted from mine to hers. There was real fear there, but also absolution. Carter had given her one job and that was protecting me. I felt a growl escape my lips.

“We wait, or we get you the fuck out of here. What's going to be Alpha?”

I blinked as emotions collided through me. Not just that she chose to value me in that sense, but she had unceremoniously pledged herself to me. I didn’t understand it but the wolf did as she roiled under my skin.

“I’m not going anywhere without him,” I snarled, surprising myself. Mazzie just nodded as Rosie looked up at me expectantly and Tucker padded into the room. I patted her head, “I’m going to get Daddy back,” I promised and she just sat at my feet looking up at me with those concerned eyes.

“If you can feel him he's still alive,” Lana murmured in explanation.

“They are going to use him as bait, I should just take you far away from here,” Mazzie informed me, followed by a string of curses. She was warring with her promises and her loyalty.  “It's what Carter would want.” she pressed.

“Fuck that, sounds like a croc of shit,” I told her lifting my phone from my pocket to my ear.

Misty picked up on the second ring.

“Whats up?” she asked a loud drone in the background.

“They took him,” was all I explained before a string of curses left her lips.

“Is he worth it?” she asked.

“Absolutely,” was my only answer.

“Stay where you are, we are coming”, she promised. I didn't want her in a ten foot pole of my problems.

“Cricket,”I said, my voice breaking.

“She is with my sister in Nebraska, I’ll stay off the radar, and out of town, I promise,” she urged. My heart cracked. She wasn’t backing down. I couldn’t talk her out of this I realized. It was then that my brain went into hyperdrive. If she wasn’t going to back out of this, guilt rushed me. For my mate, I would use anything I could get.

“Can you track him?” I asked.

“Give me a moment,” she said, her fingers typing wildly over keys in the background.

“Yes, as long as his cell has a signal, he's moving north. My eyes met Mazzie’s. She cursed again.

“He is going to flay me if he survives this, " she pointed out as I ducked into the closet below the stairs.

“I’m going after my mate, you can tag along or not,” I said, coming out with ole Betty strapped to my back and two guns lashed to my thighs. Lana and Mazzie’s eyes met, something passing between them before they nodded at each other.

“Now tell me everything I should know about killing werewolves,” I said while checking that my knife was in my boot; it had become a habit.
