“You’re the ‘human’ woman that  everyone has been talking about?”

I shrugged.

“I suppose you’re newly shifted so you wouldn’t know. Werewolf babies grow fast the first few weeks, then they fall into the normal growth range for humans. There is just more to the anatomy that works itself out in the beginning,” he informed me. I just nodded taking in that information. I doubted I could find a what to expect when you are expecting werewolf addition. He lifted my shirt and placed the cold device on my lower belly. I held my breath and it seemed like Lana and Mazzie were doing the same as he moved it around before he nodded. He popped the ear pieces out.

“The baby is doing fine,” he said with a warm smile and offering the stethoscope to Lana who eagerly put them in her ears. If  I sat up  I would move the placement the Doctor had on the endpiece so I just watched her, stone still and watched her face light up. Her eyes met mine as she grinned. Just then a sound hurdled into my mind, like a fan circling. My eyes widened as I gaped at her. Carter stirred but didn’t wake his arm reaching for me, so I gripped his hand.

Lana passed them to Mazzie who took a turn, and the sound faded from my mind.

“I have never been a true pack member of Divide, just a tolerated guest, but I know who my alpha is, I choose you,” she said out loud. My jaw dropped as I stared at her before my eyes shot to the Doctor, would he tell my father?

To his credit he just smiled and zipped his finger over his lips.

“I claim doctor patient confidentiality on this one,” he said with a laugh. Mazzie looked at me blinking, rare emotion ghosting across her face.

“I’m so happy for you two,” she said with tears in her eyes.

The Doctor took some tubing and needles from his bag, he hooked up Carter first, clamping the tubes before coming over to me. I practically shoved my arm in his face and he chuckled before prepping the spot and inserting the needle and taping it down.

“We can do this once a day until he is improving on his own, you need to make sure you are eating properly, and I suggest cleaning the wounds daily, but the best thing you can do for him is physical touch, skin to skin. A mate’s presence will lure his wolf to the surface and once he is ready to shift, he should do so. It will speed along the process.

When the Dr had finished he unhooked us and left. Mazzie and Lana shooed me into the downstairs shower, forcing me to leave Carter, I scoured myself clean. In the moment, in the wolf’s eyes, killing had been easy, I found I didn’t regret it. Creedon had sealed his fate with me the second he laid hands on me. In retrospect, a small part of me thanked him for getting me here, to Divide, to Carter, and my family; to discovering long buried truths. I let the heaviness of it all wash away with his blood. I’d plant a hideous tree in his honor and that would be all the thanks I would be willing to give him. Now I had to deal with his pack and company on top of Uncle Jakes and my father. Those thoughts melted away when I thought about the little souls I was harboring in my womb. I would do it all for them. The door opened and I almost slipped as I was coming out of my thoughts.

The curtain moved and my wolf surfaced. The fabric was yanked back to reveal Lana with a grin.

“Oh, sorry did I scare you?” she said apologeticlly.

I splashed the shower spray at her.

“I almost wolfed out on you! It’s not funny,” I protested reaching over and turning the water off. She handed me a towel.

“Relax hot mama, I just came to tell you Mazzie went to get food for the fridge and take out for tonight, it’s late but Doctor’s orders. Now go get your naked ass in bed with your mate so he dreams of fucking you so he gets better faster,” she said with a teasing grin.

“Lana you’re insufferable,” I said though I had planned on just that. I doubted I could stay awake much longer. I was exhausted and starving for a change. Maybe I would take a nap until Mazzie got back. I grabbed another towel and dried my hair. How did she have so much pep for someone who had gotten just as little sleep as I did? I walked into the bedroom Carter was in, grinned at Lana and shut the door in her face.

“Awe, come on Briar I’ve seen it all already,” she complained.

“No more free shows. I’m taking a nap. Wake me up when the food gets here,” I said, before tossing my towel on the floor before climbing under the covers with Carter.

“Whatever,” Lana huffed but I didn’t miss her soft laugh as she walked down the hallway. I wanted some alone time with him to ease my mind that he would be okay, without the mother hens. I sat up on my elbow looking down at him. I brushed the hair out of his face. He looked a little less pale which gave me some relief but I peeked under the covers to see the worst wounds still seeping a bit. I brushed the hair out of his face and I found myself talking to him.

“I was so scared for you. I’m still scared. I don’t know what to do next. We are a team. I need you whole.”

I snuggled into his side carefully not wanting to cause him any more pain. Creedon hadn’t left much of his torso unmarred by the slice of his wolfsbane knife.

“You know, I never thought about finding love, I thought it was a fairy tale. After Creedon I swore I’d never fall for another man. Then you came along and I fought it so hard, the more I did the more I found I admired and respected you and the walls started to fall away. It was easy to love you. I know your past bothers you, the things he made you do. I’m sorry it took me so long to come to terms with how I felt, to forgive things I didn't understand. I want you to know that I chose you long before I knew anything.” I whispered, tracing my thumb along his jaw. “I just didn’t trust myself, let alone anything or anyone else. I know we have a long haul here to do what Jake asked. My heart knows that doing it will be worth it in the long run. Not just for this pack, but for our family,” I said before I tentatively kissed his lips, wishing he were awake to hear me. I went to pull away when a hand snaked into my hair and drew me back and he kissed me. Soft, slow and endearingly as our tongues explored, my eyes meeting his in the dim lamplight.

“I love you,” he said softly, his voice hoarse. I smiled at him.

“I love you too. Now rest before one of them comes busting in here and disturb the peace,” he grumbled.
