Her CEO Stalker and Her Second Chance Mate Chapter 162
Lana
“You doing okay over there princess?” Briar called back. We were trudging through the trees after hiding our bikes inside the treeline. Apparently Mr. Alphahole had no sense of being snuck up on because he had nobody checking the perimeter. Mazzie called it a stupid bullshit city wolf move. While Briar insisted she would take her advantages where she could get them.
“I’m good.” I called but in the back of my mind I wondered why I had even come. I wasn’t a fighter, in my little Alaskan town I was expected to be the alphas chosen. A bride and mate, I was expected to salt fish, skin kills, and sleep with whomever the alpha warranted we needed alliances with or friendships that they wanted closer to family. I grew up with that culture, we didn’t have issues like these, true mates were so rare that we didn’t even have stories about them. Natives that weren’t shifters didn’t even practice the wife swap anymore; it was a non issue. I just didn’t want to spend the rest of my life processing animals. Now here I was wondering what I could even do to help.
I caught up with Brair, Mazzie just out of earshot.
“How am I supposed to help? I’m not a fighter, you both know it.” Briar hooked her arm with mine forcing me to keep pace. She pulled her phone out. She had been texting someone when we ditched the bikes. I didn’t know what she was up to. I assumed it was Misty.
“You're not going in Lan, take this,” she said, pressing the phone into my hand. Just stay close enough if Misty calls. I get it, the rest you will understand soon, make sure we have the witnesses,” Briar said, pushing my hand that now held her phone away. We had gotten another message from Creedon and while it caused Briar to just, I don’t know, fall into this quiet calm. She had become a predator moving towards its prey. If it were me…I wouldn’t cross her. At some point, karma had to swoop in and destroy this asshole and …Briar right now was a force to be reckoned with. She let me go, taking a few steps away from me. We could see the house through the tangle of trees. Her hair mostly loose now from the ride and the trek through the woods. A breeze blew against her, her eyes closing as it rushed past. I took in the beauty of that moment as she stood like an avenging valkyrie, Carter's hat against her back and her honey blonde hair lifting on the wind.
She was resolved in her love and I feared she would do anything to save him. In that moment I glanced at Mazzie the same moment her eyes landed on me. That look told me everything. If she tried to sacrifice herself for him she would step in. Carter and Mazzie were something deeper than siblings. Their bond had been created long before I showed up and Mazzie was loyal to a fault. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I watched Briar, Mazzie doing the same.
“Let’s get closer, I need to see he's alive,” Briar’s voice was but a whisper. We both followed as she moved deeper into the trees until we came up on a spot where if we pressed closer we could see Carter strung up.
“You two get some rest, tonight is going to be an even longer night,” Briar told us, motioning into the woods behind us.
“You’re the one that needs rest,” Mazzie chastised.
“If he's not getting any nor will I,” she said stilling as he came into view before the trees. Thankfully the wind was blowing towards us so our scent drifted away from the men surrounding him. However it also brought the scent of Carter's blood to our noses. With Briar’s wolf so close to the surface, I was sure she could scent her mate. I watched her face as her steps paused and she stiffened, tears rolled down her face as she kept walking. She sat down and pulled her knees to her chest and sobbed. I sat beside her pulling her close. We had talked about this on the way here. We had to wait till nightfall, when we could surprise them. This wait was going to be torture.
Mazzie crouched in front of her. “We’re going to get him back Briar, come hell or high water. I just need you to breathe right now and keep your wolf from controlling you by your emotions. I know she wants to go tear everyone of them to hell, but we need back up and they are on their way. Briar nodded but sunset was far too long away.
That's when Carter's screams ripped through the world.
