Carter

Lana woke us a few hours later Briar and I were curled close together and she groaned at the knock on the door. My body protested as Briar stirred and pulled away, however her skin still touched mine beneath the blankets.

“Pizza is here!” Lana announced and opened the door. Mazzie followed her in with several boxes as Briar sat up pulling the covers up to her chest. This was going to be awkward. Lana took a box from Mazzie and plopped down at the foot of the bed as Briar helped me sit up. Mazzie passed us each a pie and took her place in the chair next to Briar’s side of the bed with her own box. The smell had me salivating before Briar flipped back the lid for me before doing the same to her own.

We both matched Lana as we began downing our food.

“Slow down, you two or you will make yourselves sick,” Mazzie warned before leisurely taking a bite of her pizza. She was right but I was ravenous. Days without eating was making me borderline delirious and when I glanced over at Briar I realized one of us might be feeding off the other but I wasn’t sure which one. She had shifted for the first time, and I had no idea when she ate last and…she was pregnant, I let that sink in, she had risked herself and the baby to save me. I was never letting that happen again. Alpha or not Briar was my mate and I would protect her. I offered her the remainder of my slice to try and she passed me hers. I smiled though my exhaustion was heavy. 

“So what are we doing about Clyde?” Mazzie asked, between mouthfuls.

“Nothing for now, let him think we don’t know he tried to get rid of Carter alongside me. I want to see how he plays this,” Briar said, unbothered before picking up another and looping the cheese that stretched on her finger.

“Why?” Lana asked the question we all wanted to know.

Briar held her finger up as she chased her next bite and swallowed.

“Because Carter needs time to heal, and we need time to get to the bottom of the things Jake found out,” she said.

“He wanted me to prove myself. I did. Let’s see what he does with that. He either tries to push us out or allows us to get closer. Once Carter is on his feet we need to get whatever he left out of the safety deposit box. Once he sees the footage he will know who became my allies, he will be watching all of us, so that trip will have to look normal. Lana and I will go on a ‘girls day’ and maybe Misty can help us find out any missing pieces. After that we will decide how to move forward. One thing is clear though, Clyde is a crap individual, he may have had my Uncle killed and tried to do the same to my mate, if that’s so, then we can’t allow this world to suffer his presence,” she surmised before continuing her meal.

“Clyde is my kill,” I said, and everyone paused to look at me. I looked at Briar. “For one he is your father, for two he threatened us both, not to mention he most likely had my mentor and my mates true father figure killed. He has threatened my family. I’m sorry Briar, you may be more dominant but my pregnant mate is not putting herself at risk again. You want to play detective fine, you want to get close to him and see what else you can dig up. I’m okay with that. But this fight is mine. I’ve done some horrendous things under his orders. This fight is mine, I’m not trying to belittle you. Your strength and dominance has been proven, but I’m not risking you and our child. You shouldn’t have to take out your own father, and with Clyde it’s personal for me. I want to know where all these people we ran out of town went.”

Briar studied me.

“Then you best have your ass to rights when it’s time,” Briar said, not even bothering to Look at me as she bit into another slice.

“Carter, you’re a …” Mazzie started to protest but I cut her off.

“Low ranking Beta yeah, I know. I get it but I know I won’t let dominance stop me from protecting my mate, my family, and my pack. I’ve seen a new side of my wolf emerge lately. I know I can take him.” I promised them all. Mazzie looked at me doubtfully, Lana just seemed thoughtful.
