Her CEO Stalker and Her Second Chance Mate Chapter 179
Briar
The mountain scenery sped by as Lana drove, and I felt the sudden shift as we passed a point. We had exited the territory, and we had both instantly relaxed. I looked at her and she spared me a glance before turning her eyes back to the road. Something had been niggling at me. I didn’t know why, but from the instant Carter insisted on killing my father, my fear had been replaced by random, untested possibilities, ideas I didn’t want to put past just anyone. Lana, however, had admitted she was once a wolf with dominance and a high rank, but her trauma had weakened her. Dominance displays made her nervous, yet she was the first to approach me, with my fangs still sunk deep into Creedon’s neck.
“Random thought for 2000?”’
“What's up, mama?”
“If Carter can feel my emotions, and they affect his, why can't I use the same link between us to share my dominance if he is so set on taking on Clyde. I watched Lana blink before she paused to focus on a particularly windy bit of road.
She cleared her throat before she spoke.
“Where I come from, things are very different; it's why Mazzie and I seem so unconventional. In my world, it's not so reputed,” she said carefully.
“Lana, I don’t look down on you,” I found myself saying.
“That's not what I am trying to say,” she backpeddled, easing the car around the next curve in the road. “My pack still adheres to old traditions, in sharing when it benefits the pack or an ally. However, some things are reserved for our mate. If a Luna holds more dominance to her alpha, she can choose to share it. I haven’t seen it done, but there are stories. Your bond with Carter is strong, and I think if you work at it you could make it happen.”
“Tell me more,” I said intrigued..
A few hours later we had the contents of Jake's safety deposit box in Lana’s trunk and she handed me the keys still in the happy place after receiving the energy healing tattoo.
“You can do it,” she insisted. “Let’s test it first, once he shifts you ease it into him see if he responds. I just nodded, starting the car and heading home eager to be back with Carter. Yet at the same time as the territory line washed over me it just felt wrong. The land wasn’t the issue, it felt like home. The problem was that it was my father’s domain. Being a wolf was not all rainbows and unicorns. I may be the unicorn but what I needed right now was direction.
When we got back to the house Lana followed me inside. I was still thinking about what she said when I got a text from Carter.
Carter:I miss you, these assholes are testing my patience. Everything that happened seems to have been swept under the rug. All they know is that I smell of you and they keep trying to get a rise out of me that I’m whipped by a human. I don’t know how much you want me to say. So I’m just taking it but my wolf is about to sink his claws into someone.
I showed Lana the message and she rolled her eyes.
“That department is full of idiot assholes,” she said with a snarl. She wasn’t hiding her wolf from me anymore and I felt privileged for that.
“So do I leave him or rescue him?” I asked, confused at what to do with this information.
“I don’t know, but you can’t leave him hanging and I think this will open all the doors,” she let me know.
She was right, however opening those doors would happen eventually anyway. I swore and jogged up the stairs. I had to look the part and all that jazz. We would address the contents of the safety deposit box when we could sit down with it together.
I was dressed in a denim skirt over black distressed leggings, my boots and a chunky off the shoulder cowl-necked sweater. Most of my online clothing orders had come in. Right now I was thankful for it. I pulled up to Carter’s sister’s diner and dismounted my bike. I was going to set a lot of things straight tonight.
The bell on the door rang as I pushed my way inside. My eyes met hers almost immediately. She stepped away from the server she was talking to, her eyes narrowed on me.
“Can I help you with something Briar?”
“Yeah a few things, food for one.” I said and she rolled her eyes but produced her notepad from her apron pocket either way.
“Here or to go,” she asked tersely.
“To go, I’m bringing Carter dinner,” I said, testing the waters.
“I told Carter what I told you, he hasn’t spoken to me since,” she admitted.
“Well, maybe you should have asked him what he wanted.”
Her eyes widened, she looked me up and down before she sniffed the air, her eyes widened. I flicked my hair over my shoulder exposing the faint scars on my neck from his bite.
I gave her a smug smirk as realization dawned on her.
“Now sister in law you and I need to have a chat, but this isn’t the time or place. Carter and I have been through hell the last few weeks, I expect to go through a few more hells over the coming weeks. I don’t have the patience to chat with you right now. But how about that order?” I asked holding my ground and not taking my eyes off her.
Stunned, she nodded, walking over to the kitchen, passing my order along. I turned to walk outside and wait.
“Briar,” she said tentatively. I stopped moving but didn’t turn to her.
Her voice was just a whisper so only I could hear her.
“Clyde told me just before I spoke to you that Carter was getting in over his head with you, that if he didn’t back off, there would be repercussions. I was only looking out for my brother. I didn’t consider any other possibilities. I should have. Carter was clearly different from you; now I know why. I shouldn’t have questioned it.”
I snorted. “You need to tell my mate that, not me,” I murmured softly before exiting the diner. I leaned against my bike and took out my phone, needing a distraction. I had planted a seed of truth with his sister. It was up to her if she chose to reach out.
