“Briar!” I yelled, with all the strength I had left, watching horrified as I pulled on my restraints. The warning came too late, she had already seen it for what it was. One heartbeat Briar stood as a strong determined woman facing her most hated demon, the next she had launched herself at Creedon. It played out before me as if it was slow motion. Dread washing over me. I watched the softness of her features become angles, sharpening in one heartbeat and the next she had sprouted silver fur, body and limbs reshaping as tatters of clothes fell to the ground. That dread was replaced instantly with wonder as a rush coursed through the bond; completing her link to me.

My beautiful resilient mate didn’t falter. Her lunge seamless, as if the wolf’s mind and body were her own. Her jaw opened in a snarl. He leapt towards her, both flying through the air. Her head angled as her sharp fangs sank into Creedon’s mangy brindle wolf’s throat. He yelped and struggled trying to get a hold of her with his teeth. His claws cutting into her shoulder as he attempted to push her off and break free. Her response was to shake him viciously, and in doing so she ripped open his jugular. Red blood coating her silver maw. A guttural sound from Creedon was suddenly cut off, his powerful body falling limp. She shook him again, refusing to let go of her kill, not believing he was already dead. I sagged in relief. She had done it. 

I watched Lana tentatively jog up to Briar as Mazzie still kept her guns trained on Creedon’s men along with the witnesses who edged the treeline. Nobody was willing to accept that they would be compliant after Briar’s fair victory. Thankfully Creedon backing off on the wolfsbane had restored some of my senses.

“It’s done Briar, you did it,” Lana tried to sooth her. She snarled at Lana in warning when Creedon’s body jerked post mortem, just his nervous system’s reaction to the brain shutting down. She shook him wildly again for good measure. Chest heaving heavily when she finished before her eyes looked up to see Lana’s face.

“You did it girly, he can’t touch you anymore. You’re free,” she promised. She stood there staring at her for the longest of moments before her humanity sunk in. Her eyes met mine. 

‘Carter!’ her voice skimmed across my mind. Her fangs released from Creedon’s neck and she ran on four paws, barreling towards me.

‘I’m okay,’ I tried to ease the flood of emotions, content we had this now, the ability to hear each other. Lana in human form was hot on her tail, with Jake’s jacket in her hand. Briar’s body morphed, shifting from wolf to woman mid stride. Her naked body glistening with sweat in the cool night’s breeze. In just a few breaths her hands were cupping my face searching my eyes the moment she reached me.

“Carter!”

“You are some bad ass wolf,” I murmured to her as I relished the tingling feel of her hands on my skin.

She shook her head at my response, not caring how amazing I thought she was. Lana draped Jake’s jacket over her shoulders.

I smiled at her, I was barely aware of Mazzie taking the knife Creedon had used to mutilate me, until she began to cut me down, Briar put herself under my shoulder to support me. 

“I have the most amazing mate,” I told her before I coughed.

“Shut up,” She told me, wanting me to save my strength. I chuckled at the irony of it all. Mazzie finished cutting the ties to my feet as Briar held me up. Lana had taken up the other side but I hadn’t really noticed until Mazzie took her place.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

My eyes raised to see a woman clad in a black pencil skirt and blazer, crisp white blouse shamelessly unbuttoned too far.

Briar growled but cut it off quickly.
