Briar

Rage coursed through my blood as it rang in my ears. Carter’s swollen steel blue eyes were locked on mine as my words rang through the night air. Several large men turned to find Mazzie and me in the center of the deck as they had been distracted, all leaning over the banister watching the “show”. I had Ole Betty pointing straight at Creedon, too bad I couldn’t use the gun, and skipped to the part where I saved my mate. I had to do this right; being new to this world could have had me ruin this opportunity to completely dismantle his empire. Thanks to Mazzie and Lana, I wouldn’t be making any mistakes. Carter’s capture just moved things forward faster than I had anticipated, and I wasn’t sure I was ready, but I’d make do. As if in answer to my self doubt the wolf inside me surged to the surface, prickling under my skin as Creedon spun to see me standing there spattered in blood, jaw set and determined wearing a face that he didn’t expect, Creedon never knew who I really was, the person Carter embraced and adored lent only disgust to the man I had rejected. I gave him a mocking grin with my black cherry painted lips.

“I see they have turned you into a heathen just like the rest of these mutts,” Creedon sneered in disgust.

I ignored Mazzie’s growl at the slight.

“I’ll beat that nonsense out of you soon enough,” he spat.

“Briar, get the fuck out of here, don’t worry about me,” Carter begged. My eyes landed on his for a moment, and I shook my head. Not a fucking chance, his head fell resigned that I wasn’t walking away from this.

“I’ve always been a heathen, you just never took the time to get to know me,” I said simply.

“Put the gun down, Addy, you don’t know what you're doing with that thing. You're gonna hurt yourself.”

I pointed the barrel down a smidge and pulled the trigger. The slug hit the ground at Creedon’s feet; grass and dirt flying. I was already reloading from the pouch of ammo strapped to my hip as Mazzie kept the surrounding men off me. He jumped back, eyes widening. Look who's worried now.

“Like I said, you don’t know me,” I reminded him, my voice steady, the gun already aimed right at him.

“Back your dogs off,” I ordered. He waved his hand, and the crowd of men moved away from him and Carter, the ones on the deck filed down the steps, joining the others. I started down the stairs, gun still trained on him as Mazzie with her two pistols backed me, ensuring nobody dared jump my back as she moved with me. I watched the intelligence in Creedon's eyes measure me as he shifted gears.

“Take it back, Addy, come back with me, and you will want for nothing. Be the Queen of my empire. Had I known what you were, who you were to me…”

“You can’t take back what you did to me,” I snarled at him, my voice hoarse as tears leaked out of the corners of my eyes.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I read your proposals after everything. I underestimated you. I’ll support any venture you pass across my desk going forward, no questions asked. I should have realized the brilliance of your ideas.”

My arms relaxed just a smidge. I had wanted this once, to become someone I wasn’t just to make it happen.

“I’ll even let you keep your new toy, locked up, of course, but he will live.” Creedon offered.

Carter could live; we could make it out of this. I eased my trigger finger off. He won’t let me keep my baby, though.

“It’s too late for that,” I said flatly, regaining my grip on Ole Betty. I was now only a few feet from him. I could just pull the trigger, and it would all be over. I fought with myself. I had to do this right.

“Be realistic, Addy, there are only two of you and three dozen men ready to take you out the instant you pull the trigger.

“Maybe two dozen, now,” I said with a shrug.

“What did you do, Addy?” he growled.

“Put them down for a nap; they were in my way,” I said unapologetically.

He shook his head in disbelief.

“You have ambition, I’ll give you that, but you will never make it out of here alive, nor will your precious Sheriff or your friend there,” Creedon warned. I wanted to pull the trigger so badly. A few more steps and I had the barrel pressed into his chest. I stifled the pure rage coursing through me as the wolf roiled under my skin. Creedon noticed.

“I hate you,” I snarled.

“Good, I like it when you hate me, it means I get to hurt you,” he purred and the next moment he moved so fast it was but a blur of motion. The next millisecond he had grabbed my arm wrenching it as he yanked my back to his front, Ole Betty falling to the ground. She had gotten me this far, the shot gun had done her job. I had let it happen.

“Let her go!” Carter yelled, yanking at his restraints. I forced my eyes away, unable to afford the distraction.

Creedon laughed. “Your mine now Addy,” he purred against my neck and inhaled. I felt him stiffen. I knew just what he was smelling.

“You fucking slut! You let him impregnate you!”he snarled. “Nothing a doctor can’t fix though.”

“Who says it’s his?” I tried to argue. I knew it was fruitless.

“Ignorant bitch,” he growled. “His scent is so ingrained in you I can taste it,” he hissed. Tears leaked from my eyes.

“Don’t cry, Addy, I’ll be doing you a favor; you are better than this poor excuse for a beta. You’re mine. You are of Alpha blood. Bare me a child or two, and I’ll let you keep him as a pet, then you can fuck him all you want.” He tried to lure me in with promises he had no intention of keeping. A life I could never subject Carter too. I forced my body to go lax in his arms and he loosened his grip just enough. Satisfied with my mock surrender, he grinned into my hair.

“Seems like you are finally seeing sense,” he growled, in contentment, before he pressed his lips to my neck. I forced the shudder of repulsion down, along with the impending anxiety attack; I was about to have at being this close in proximity to my rapist. I thought I might suffocate, surrounded by air. I forced a deep breath; it was now or never.

In one quick move, I lifted my foot, and the knife slid from my boot into my open hand. Fast as lightning, I was propelled by my wolf’s strength and agility. Whirling, I sliced him across the middle, as my other arm knocked his grasping hands away. The movement ended. I was in a half crunch on defense, my eyes meeting his enraged ones as a red bloom spread across the lower half of his crisp white shirt. Had I dug deeper, his guts would have been falling out.

“I could have killed you more than once now, but I have a better option. I challenge you, Creedon MacAlister.”
