Her CEO Stalker and Her Second Chance Mate Chapter 127
Briar
I chose a loose tee and a pair of board shorts, before I braided my hair back in a messy french braid. When I was done I grabbed what was left of last night's tequila, my knife and the pack of a handful of cigarettes. I went out on the front porch leaning the shot gun beside me as I sat. I stared into the night for a long while. The sense that eyes were on me kept me watchful but as I sat there attentively watching the dark nothing happened. I took a swig of liquor, setting it on the table before I lit a cigarette. I stared into the darkness as I dialed Misty.
“Adeilade?” she answered.
“Hey,” I meant for the word to be more cheery but it came out with the heaviness I felt in my heart.
“Why are you back at your place?” she asked tentatively and the background noise of the TV faded as she moved to a quieter place in the house. She must have been watching the cameras.
I paused before I decided how much to tell her.
“There’s too many secrets, Carter isn’t who I thought he was. I don’t know if he's one of the good guys or one of the bad ones anymore.”
“What did he do?” she asked, appalled. I heard a door open then close and some whispers that I couldn’t make out but it was clear Beck was in the room.
“He didn’t do anything, I just learned some things I need to think about. Shit Mist, my head is a mess right now. I wish you were here.”
“I may not be there but I’m always here. That being said, I should tell you…”
“Tell me what?”
“The piece of shit has been talking to someone in your new area code. The conversations are short so I can’t pinpoint the other number. You need to be careful.”
I groaned.
“Way to kick a bitch when she's down,” I said sarcastically as I put the cigarette out.
“Sorry,” she said. “Do I need to come castrate a certain sheriff?
I snorted. “No, I might like those parts too much if we get past this,” I pointed out.
“Oh,” she said, surprised. She knew I hadn’t been with anyone else besides the force Creedon had taken on me.
“I’ll let you know if I change my mind though, it's definitely a possibility.” more whispers on her end.
“Whats he saying?”
“He’s ready to castrate Carter for fucking things up if you’d like,” she told me. There was some rustling.
“Out…girl talk…I’m serious.” more rustling. Beck grumbled something I couldn’t make out. A door opened and closed in the background. “I swear he's worse than a mother hen,” she complained and I could imagine her rolling her eyes. “Spill Ads, you two were getting along just fine a few days ago—she cleared her throat—those training sessions, the way he looks at you, I thought you found your white night.”
“You’ve been spying on me?”
“Duh, I wouldn’t be your bestie if I wasn’t checking in.” she pointed out.
I sighed. “This town isn’t what it seems, apparently, or so I’ve been told.”
“By who?”
“Some guy with a god complex, anyway, all the shit he spewed, I can’t look at Carter the same, he was paid to watch me.”
The line went deadly quiet.
When Misty came back her voice was tight.
“Do you want to run?”
“No, I have too much to find out here, Jake and my father came from here and I want to know what's going on. Not to mention the dickwad with a god complex seemed to hint I needed to figure out these secrets sooner than later. So I’m working from home now and going through Jake’s stuff.
“I’m sorry you are going through this, Carter, I thought he was a real one…the way he looked at you…shit the way you looked at each other…and those work out sessions, god they were hot,”
“You’ve been spying on me.” I accused.
“Guilty, but back to what I asked.”
“I don’t know anymore, my head is a mess right now, he said some things beforehand that make me want to believe he's one of the good guys but I don’t know if my heart can handle this.”
“What does you’re gut say?” She asked.
“I don’t know, I feel I owe it to both of us to hear him out but I need some time, I’m going to focus on going through Jake’s stuff right now, I am set up to work from home so my distractions will be minimal.”
“I don’t like you being alone right now, it's too risky.”
“Lana is insistent on keeping me company, and you can keep an eye on the cameras,” I explained as a movement caught my attention and the wolf that had visited weeks ago emerged from the shadows. Something in my chest eased and I felt immediately better.
“Hah, seems I have company,” I let Misty know. I could hear her fingers typing in the background as she opened up the camera feed.
“Shit! Adielade go inside!”
“No, he's fine” I insisted as the wolf sat on his haunches and watched me.
“You're crazy, that's a wild animal,” she argued.
I shrugged to myself. He may be a wild animal but I didn’t fear him.
“I’ll call you if anything else happens,” I promised. “Give Cricket my love,”
“Will do, but go inside or I’m going to be staring that thing down through this screen until I know you are safe.” she urged.
“Fine!” I said collecting my things and going inside. I grabbed Carter’s hoodie and pulled it on his scent engulfing me. That felt good. I was so fucking pathetic, I thought as I trailed down the hallway flicking off the lights and sliding into my bed.
