I tried to brush the sneers off, it was all a big joke to them. They had no idea of what had transpired or that their alpha was involved in trying to take me out. Briar had told me about his visit. I sent him a text message simply explaining that her ex came after me in order to get to her but the threat was dealt with. However, now I had to recover from the wolfsbane. He never responded. That information hadn’t leaked out to the pack. In fact the details were strangely quiet. The hope was that he didn’t know we knew. For all anyone that guessed knew, I had been out on an assignment; which was rare, but I had somehow returned to the pack in such a bad state that I had been MIA for two weeks. 

I was sitting at my desk rummaging through paperwork when I heard a knock at the door.

“Come in,” I said, not able to halt the groan in my voice. Who was coming to mock me now? The door opened, only to let Briar breeze in. My mood immediately lifted to a happy state. I smiled at her and her two bags of take out until I realized they were from my sister’s diner. That mood deflated. I gave her a questioning look.

“You saw my sister? How did that go?” I asked as she began taking boxes out of a bag and setting them on the desk. 

“I think she will be regretting her choices," she said, coming around the desk. I grabbed her and pulled her into my lap. She laughed, settling back into me and pulling my face down to hers. I kissed her deeply, having been starved for her all day. One hand protectively resting on her lower belly. That’s when the door opened and my eyes shot to it with a deep growl. The Chief had entered, jaw dropped at the sight of us in such an intimate embrace. I growled again, spiking Briar’s arousal as she kissed me needily; her lips never leaving mine.

“Shit, sorry Carter.” he said, a file in hand. That’s when Briar chose to break away and acknowledge the man in the room. My wolf had surged possessively forward. My mate’s wolf I could sense skimming the surface of her being enough that Chief would surely notice.  She was displaying herself on purpose. I should have realized it by the outfit and make up she was wearing when she walked in that she meant business coming in here tonight. She laced her fingers into my hair playing with it absentmindedly as the chief gawked at us.

“Ehh Chief, meet Briar, my mate. Briar, meet chief,” I introduced them. The old man’s jaw dropped.

“Uhh,” he stammered, before sniffing the air. “You’re one of us,” he said, eyes wide in shock. 

Briar to her credit just grinned, letting a fang out. 

“Right, umm sorry to interrupt but this file needs to be managed first thing tomorrow. He said handing it to me, I took it and sat it on the far side of the desk away from the take out containers.

“I’ll take care of it in the morning. We were just about to eat dinner before we headed home.”

“I need to go see my father tomorrow,” she said, and I wondered why she said that in front of the Chief.

“You gonna be ok on your own or do you need me to come?” I asked, knowing what he had offered her. We had talked about that. I let Chief overhear, on purpose. Briar revealed nothing without purpose. So I played along.

‘What are you up to?’ I asked Briar via mindlink.

‘Spreading rumors,’ she responded.

“I’ll be fine,” she insisted.

“Newly mated and already heading out of town?” Chief asked. He probably didn’t realize he said it out loud.

“No, he lives here,” she said as she shifted in my lap to grab and open a container. The scent of food had me drooling. 

“Oh, who’s your father?” Chief asked probing curiously.

“My uncle’s brother. I just met him recently myself,” she said, scooping up a large forkful of steaming fries and cheese curds smothered in gravy. She offered it to me and I took it willingly, ignoring the chief as she grinned at me. I wanted to fill my mouth and let her control this conversation. The Chief’s brows wrinkled as he contemplated but he didn’t ask further on the matter. Briar, I and our small circle of confidants were the only pack members that knew the truth.

“Well I’ll let you two get back to your meal,” Chief said, walking out and shutting the door behind him. We were both quiet as his footsteps retreated down the hall.

“Are you really going to see him all alone?”

“Depends on what I find out in the stuff I took from the safety deposit box,” she let me know before taking her own bite and groaning. “I had to rescue my mate and put a few bugs in everyone else’s ears,” she said grinning.

I smiled at her. My mate was smart and I pulled her in for another kiss.
