|| Lilac's POV ||

As we left the council room, I glanced back at Alaric one last time. He was standing with Marcus, his expression dark but determined. Our eyes met, and for a moment, I felt a surge of hope. We would get through this. Together.

As we stepped out, reporters came to us, rushing.

'Mr Blackwood, have you seen the interview?'

'Mr. Blackwood, what are your thoughts?'

'Miss Blackwood, who's side are you now?'

'Miss Blackwood are you planning to forgive Kael?'

'Miss Blackwood, what is your relationship with Alaric?'

"No comments," dad guided me away from the entire press.

The car ride home was tense, the silence heavy with unspoken words. I sat in the backseat, my phone in hand as I scrolled through the headlines. Kael’s interview had gone viral, and the public was eating it up. The accusations against Alaric were spreading like wildfire, and the Alpha Council was under pressure to take action.

“Alpha King’s Son Accuses Brother of Torture and Betrayal”

“Kael Reventhorn Steps Down from Election, Exposes Family Secrets”

“Alaric Reventhorn: Hero or Villain?”

"Lilac Blackwood: Whose Side Is She On?”

I tossed the phone aside, my jaw clenched. This was worse than I had anticipated. Kael’s lies had struck a chord with the public, and the damage was spreading fast. My mind raced as I tried to come up with a plan. Things were turning in Kael’s favor again, and I couldn’t let that happen.

The Goddess’s words echoed in my mind, “If you fail to find your mate and rise to the throne, everyone will die.” Was this the start of it? The thought sent a chill down my spine.

“Lilac,” my father’s voice broke through my thoughts. “You need to stay out of this. It’s too dangerous.”

I turned to him, my eyes filled with determination. “Dad, Kael is lying! He is doing all this to win the election.”

My father sighed, his expression weary. “I know, but this isn’t your fight. Let the Reventhorns handle their own business.”

“Alaric is innocent,” I said, my voice firm.

"I said, you will stay away and that's final," he replied in a firm voice, but I could see the worry in his eyes. He knew I was right, but he was scared for me. And I couldn’t blame him. Kael and Cassandra were dangerous, and they wouldn’t hesitate to hurt me if it meant getting what they wanted. And with Runa's situation, I was defenseless.

The car sped down the winding road, the city fading into vast farmlands as we left the capital behind. The tension in the car was palpable, my father’s hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror every few seconds. My mind raced, trying to piece together a plan, a counterattack, anything that could stop Kael and Coco from destroying everything we had worked for. But the more I thought, the more hopeless it seemed. Kael’s lies had spread like wildfire, and the public was eating it up. Even the Alpha King’s reputation was at stake.

“Dad,” I said, my voice trembling as I glanced out the window. “Do you think Cassandra was behind this? Did she push Kael to do this?”

My father’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he focused on the road. “It’s possible. Cassandra’s always been cunning. But right now, we need to focus on getting home safely.”

I nodded, but the unease in my chest only grew. Something felt off. The road was too quiet, the farmlands too still. My eyes drifted to the side mirror, and that’s when I saw it— a black SUV trailing us, its headlights cutting through the fading daylight.

“Dad,” I said, my voice low but urgent. “There’s a car behind us. I think they’re following us.”

My father’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror again, his expression grim. “I know. They’ve been there for a while now.”

My heart skipped a beat. “What do we do?”

“Hold still,” he said, his voice calm but firm. He pressed down on the accelerator, the car lurching forward as the speedometer climbed. The farmlands blurred past us, the wind whipping through the open windows. But no matter how fast we went, the SUV kept pace.

“Two in the truck, four in the SUV,” my father said, his voice steady despite the tension in the air. “Six of them. They’re not here for a friendly chat.”

I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms.

What do they want?

I thought, my mind racing. But I didn’t voice the question aloud. My father was already on edge, and I didn’t want to add to his worry.

The truth was, I felt defenseless. My wolf was dormant, silent, leaving me vulnerable. I couldn’t shift, couldn’t fight. I was a liability, and the thought made my chest tighten with fear. But I couldn’t tell my father. He already had enough to worry about. I had to stay strong, even if I felt anything but it.

“Dad,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “If something happens… if things go wrong… you should run. Don’t worry about me.”

My father glanced at me, his expression softening for a moment. “Don’t talk like that, sweetpea. First, I will always protect you. Second, I am the royal beta. I think, I can handle a few rogues."

"But dad..." I trailed off.

"Don't worry. We’ll get through this. Together.” He assured again.

I nodded, but the fear in my chest was suffocating. My wolf’s absence was a constant ache, a reminder of how powerless I was. I couldn’t defend myself or my father. All I could do was hope we made it to the woods, where the guards patrolled during the day.

But as we entered the forest, my heart sank. A truck was blocking the road, its headlights blinding us as we approached. My father cursed under his breath, swerving to avoid it, but the SUV behind us slammed into the back of our car, sending us spinning.
