|| Lilac’s POV ||

Elara’s eyes narrowed, and before I could stop her, she reached over and pulled down the collar of my dress, checking for a mark on my neck.

“Did he mark you?” she demanded.

“No,” I said, pushing her hand away. “It’s not like that.”

“But now your mate is here,” Elara said, her voice firm. “So everything will slowly go away, Lilac.”

“I don’t know that,” I replied, my voice trembling.

Suddenly, Madeline giggled, her eyes glued to her phone. All of us turned to look at her, our expressions a mix of frustration and amusement.

“Come on, Maddy. Put the phone down,” Astrid said, exasperated.

“I can’t. I’m texting,” Madeline replied, her fingers still flying across the screen.

They were so much in love. Why didn’t I feel the same for Elias? The thought gnawed at me, a constant reminder of the disconnect between what I was supposed to feel and what I actually did.

“Madeline, we’re being serious here,” Astrid said, her tone sharper now.

“Goddess, I’m listening,” Madeline replied, finally looking up. “But I can’t stop texting him. You won’t understand.” Her eyes flicked to me for a second, and a mischievous smile touched her lips. “I’m sure you will now.”

“No, I don’t,” I admitted, my voice quiet but firm.

Madeline stared at me, her smile fading. “Sorry, what?”

"What am I supposed to understand?" I asked.

"The bond. the pull. Like I can't stay a moment without Alexander. It kills me, makes my wolf uneasy. I contantly keep asking for his touch, his smell his voice, his everything" Madeline said.

"And that's how you supposed to look when you have a mate. Always happy, talking about mate bond and all," Astrid said.

"You look like shit, as if you haven't slept in days. Your eyes are hollow and you surely have lost weight. Are you sure you found your mate and not lost one?" Elara asked.

“I don’t understand this,” I said, my voice breaking. “I don’t feel the way you do with Alexander. I don’t feel that pull, that… bond.”

Madeline’s expression softened, and she set her phone down, giving me her full attention.

“What don’t you feel?” she asked gently.

“I don’t feel anything toward Elias,” I said, my voice trembling. “He’s barely in my mind. I don’t even want him around. It sometimes suffocates me.”

The room fell silent, the weight of my words hanging in the air. Elara and Astrid exchanged worried glances, while Madeline’s eyes filled with sympathy.

“Lil, what’s wrong? Did he do something bad?” Elara asked, her voice soft.

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “He’s a good person. He grew up alone, and he has a lot of expectations from me. He wants to build a family with me.”

“And?” Astrid prompted.

“But I don’t want to,” I admitted, tears streaming down my face. “I know he’s my soulmate. I know I’m supposed to love him, think about him, feel the pull… but I don’t. I can’t forget him. He’s always there.”

“Lilac,” Elara whispered, pulling me into a hug.

“I tried,” I sobbed, my voice breaking. “I tried to forget him. But I can’t. He’s always in my mind, as if he’s stolen my soul, Elara. The only person I want to see is him.”

“Alaric,” I whispered, his name slipping out like a prayer.

Madeline’s eyes filled with tears, and she reached out to squeeze my hand.

“This shouldn’t be happening,” she said softly. “No matter how much love you have for someone, it goes away after you find your soulmate.”

“Then why isn’t that happening for me?” I asked, my voice desperate.

“Are you sure Alaric isn’t your soulmate?” Madeline asked, her eyes searching mine for answers.

“Yeah, I mean, I’ve heard some wolves may have multiple soulmates,” Astrid added, her tone thoughtful.

“But my wolf… she never…” I trailed off, my mind racing. Runa had only said the word “mate” once, when Elias arrived in my life. Could there be more to it?

“Okay, are you sure Elias is your mate?” Elara asked, her voice firm.

“Yeah, pretty much,” I replied, though even as I said it, doubt crept in.

“I mean, when you touch, do you feel the sparks?” Madeline asked.

“I do, but they’re faint,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

“That’s fine,” Elara said, her tone reassuring. “You don’t think too much. Maybe you just need some time.”

“Yeah, after everything you’ve been through… I don’t blame you,” Astrid added, her voice gentle.

“And we’ll dig around to find a solution for you, okay?” Madeline said, her smile warm and comforting.

“Thanks, guys,” I replied, feeling a small measure of relief after sharing my heart.

The evening unfolded in a blur of laughter, drinks, and the comforting glow of the television screen. Astrid’s penthouse was warm and inviting, the kind of place where you could forget the world outside, even if just for a little while. The scent of vanilla and lavender lingered in the air, mingling with the rich aroma of chocolate and wine. We were sprawled across the couch, bowls of half-eaten desserts scattered on the coffee table, and the remnants of our drinks glinting in the soft light.
