|| Lilac’s POV ||

Elara’s words were meant to comfort me, but they only deepened the ache in my chest. What if my mate existed but didn’t want to find me? What if I was destined to be alone, to live a life without the connection I had always dreamed of? The thought was unbearable, and I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes, threatening to spill over.

I turned away from Elara, my gaze drifting to the grand hall around us. The room was alive with music and laughter, the dancers swirling in a kaleidoscope of color and movement. The red moon’s light filtered through the tall windows, casting an eerie glow over the scene. It was beautiful, magical even, but for me, it felt like a cruel reminder of what I had lost— and what I might never find.

I couldn’t stay here any longer. The walls seemed to close in around me, the noise and the laughter suffocating. I needed air, space, something to clear my mind. Without a word to Elara, I turned and walked away, my steps quick and purposeful as I made my way to the doors leading outside.

The crisp night air hit me like a wave, cooling my flushed skin and filling my lungs. I took a deep breath, the scent of pinewoods and earth filling my senses. It was familiar, comforting, and yet it stirred something deep within me, a memory I had tried to bury. My heart sank as the scent registered, its sharp, woodsy aroma reminding me so much of Alaric’s.

I didn’t know why, but my legs carried me forward, away from the grand hall and toward the woods that bordered the estate. The red moon hung high in the sky, its light guiding my path as if it had a will of its own. The gravel crunched beneath my heels, the sound echoing in the stillness of the night. My mind was a whirlwind of emotions, but my body moved on its own, drawn by something I couldn’t explain.

And then I saw him.

Alaric.

His back was to me, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the moonlight. He stood at the edge of the woods, his posture tense, his hands clenched at his sides. Even from a distance, I could recognize him— his presence, his energy, the way he carried himself. It was unmistakable.

“Alaric!” My voice called out his name before I could stop myself, the sound breaking the silence of the night.

He turned slowly, his grey eyes locking onto mine. The mask he had worn earlier was gone, and his face was bare, his expression unreadable. For a moment, neither of us spoke, the air between us thick with tension.

“I meant nothing to you, isn’t that right?” His voice was cold, sharp, cutting through the stillness like a blade. “I kept texting you, kept waiting for you by your window, and you just ignored my presence. Is this what you wanted?”

His words hit me like a punch to the gut, each one carrying a weight of pain and accusation. I felt my breath catch, my chest tightening as I struggled to find the words to respond.

“I only wanted to find my soulmate,” I said, my voice trembling. “What’s wrong with that?”

Alaric’s eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing as he took a step closer. “A soulmate,” he repeated, his tone bitter. “So you can have a happy life with him?” He paused, his voice softening but no less painful. “And what about me? Was there nothing in your heart?”

“It’s not that…” I tried to reason, but the words caught in my throat. How could I explain everything to him? How could I tell him about the Moon Goddess’s vision, about my dormant wolf, about the fear that had driven me to push him away?

“The bond we shared,” he continued, his voice rising with emotion, “what about that, Lilac? It was easy for you to throw everything away, wasn’t it? Was I just a rebound for my brother?”

His words were like a knife twisting in my chest, each one reopening wounds I had tried to ignore. I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore, the pain and guilt spilling over as I stared at him. Staying away from him had been torture, but hearing his accusations was even worse.

“Enough, Alaric,” I said, my voice breaking as I pressed my hand to his lips to silence him. “You know you mean a lot to me.”

He chuckled, the sound hollow and devoid of humor. “Is that why you’re here, looking for a mate?”

I couldn’t answer him.

"Answer me, Lilac. Did I ever mean anything to you? Even maybe, just for a fleeting second?" His voice was dark with sadness.

No words came out of my lips. A lump formed on my throat.

His stormy grey eyes studied me for a second before a bitter laugh escaped his lips, "so that's your answer, huh! I was just an idiot."

I didn’t know what came over me, but at that moment, I couldn’t bear the distance between us any longer. I stood on my tiptoes, my hands gripping the front of his suit, and pressed my lips to his in a desperate, fleeting kiss. His eyes widened in surprise, but he didn’t pull away.

When I broke the kiss, I looked up at him, my tears streaming down my face.

“Take me away, Alaric,” I begged, my voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t bear it anymore. Please, take me away.”

For a moment, he just stared at me, his grey eyes searching mine. Then, without a word, he took my hand and led me into the woods, the red moon lighting our path as we disappeared into the night.
