Elara’s words hung in the air. I did as she said, the sound of the reporters’ voices filling the room.

“Mr. Blackwood, what do you have to say about Kael Reventhorn?” one reporter asked, their microphone thrust toward Dad.

“Mr. Blackwood, do you think Kael is trying to harm your family?” another chimed in, their tone accusatory.

Dad’s expression remained calm, his voice steady as he replied. “I don’t think Kael is trying to harm my family, but his actions have surely caused pain to my daughter. But his actions towards my son is still under questions.”

My breath caught in my throat, my eyes widening as I realized what was happening. The room fell silent, the weight of Dad’s words hanging in the air.

“Do you still support the Reventhorns for the election?” another reporter asked, their question cutting through the tension.

“I can’t comment until the investigation is done,” dad said.

“Alpha Asher, what is your view on this?”

“Is Kael still being considered as the next king by the council?”

The questions came rapid-fire, each one more pointed than the last. The reporters were relentless, their voices overlapping as they pressed for answers. I sat frozen, my heart pounding as I watched the scene unfold.

Then, Alexander stepped forward, his presence commanding as he addressed the crowd. “Multiple things were discussed today during the council meeting,” he began, his voice calm but firm. “Kael’s behavior was suspicious and wrong, so the Alpha King himself has ordered an investigation into the situation. We cannot comment further until the results come out. As for the Blackwoods, they are the Royal Beta family of this kingdom. They have served the throne for generations, and their sweat and blood have made these walls secure for us all to sleep. We should never question their integrity.”

The room erupted into murmurs, the reporters scribbling furiously in their notebooks. I stared at the screen, my mind reeling. Kael was being investigated. His actions had been called out publicly. And Dad… Dad had defended me, had stood up for our family.

I blinked, pulling myself out of my daze.

“And thanks to you, I got a breaking news story, again!” she added, her tone gleeful.

“Congratulations,” I huffed, though a small smile tugged at my lips. Elara’s excitement was contagious, and despite the gravity of the situation, I couldn’t help but feel a flicker of satisfaction. I knew my name were dragged there too, but Kael’s were sinking in the mud.

“Come on, girly, this is big,” Elara said, her voice softening. “Also, looks like you have a new admirer.”

My cheeks warmed at her words, and I glanced at Ezra, who was smirking at me from his seat.

“Sure she does,” he chimed in, his tone teasing. “Someone’s asked for her permission to court her.”

“Really? Alexander Stone?? Wow!” Elara’s voice was practically a squeal, and I could picture her bouncing with excitement on the other end of the line.

"Yeah, the alpha himself," Ezra added.

“Shut up, you two!” I groaned, burying my face in my hands. My cheeks were burning now, and I could feel the weight of Mom’s teasing gaze on me.

I sighed, dropping my hands and looking at her. “It’s nothing, Elara. Just… I don't know why he thought it's a good idea... It’s not a big deal.”

“Not a big deal?” Ezra echoed, his smirk widening. “The guy practically declared his intentions out in open.”

“Ezra,” I warned, shooting him a glare. But he just laughed, clearly enjoying my discomfort.

“Okay, okay,” Elara said, her voice still filled with amusement. “I’ll let you go. But we’re talking about this later, Lil. You can’t keep something like this from me.”

“Fine,” I muttered, though I knew I’d probably regret it later. “Bye, Elara.”

I hung up the phone, setting it down on the coffee table with a sigh. The room was quiet for a moment, the weight of the news settling over us.

“Well, you should think about him at least,” mom said, her tone gentle but firm.

“Mom, please,” I said, my voice pleading. I couldn’t handle this conversation right now. My mind was already a whirlwind of emotions, and the last thing I needed was Mom playing matchmaker.

Ezra, who had been lurking nearby, couldn’t resist chiming in.

“I think it’s a great idea,” he said, his grin widening.

I shot him a glare, but he just laughed, clearly enjoying himself.

“I’ll be in my room,” I said, turning on my heel and walking away before they could say anything else.

“Sweetpea,” Mom called from behind.

I turned to see her and Ezra grinning at me. Mom stood by him, smiling as well.

“I’m proud of you,” she said, her voice filled with warmth.

I smiled, my heart swelling with love and gratitude. “Thanks, Mom,” I said softly before retreating to my room.
