|| Lilac's POV ||

Elias and Alexander exchanged polite handshakes, their conversation stiff and formal. Astrid and Elara arrived shortly after, their laughter cutting through the tension like a knife.

“Sorry we’re late,” Astrid said, her cheeks flushed from the cold.

“Look at you,” Elara teased, pulling me into a hug. “You’ve forgotten all about us after finding your mate. No texts, no calls, no meetups.”

“A lot’s been happening,” I said, my smile strained.

“And you need to tell us the entire story,” Astrid giggled, linking her arm with mine.

We walked into the restaurant, the memories hitting me like a tidal wave. The server recognized me immediately, bowing slightly as we passed. Her eyes lingered on me, filled with a quiet respect that made my chest ache. She acted as if I were still their Luna—his Luna.

As we sat down, the weight of it all pressed down on me, suffocating and inescapable. The past and the present collided, leaving me caught in the middle, torn between what was and what could be. And as much as I tried to focus on the conversation, my mind kept drifting back to Alaric, to the life I’d lost, and the future I wasn’t sure I wanted.

The world around me felt like it was spinning too fast, the weight of my thoughts pressing down on me like a suffocating blanket.

Focus, Lilac

! I scolded myself, my nails digging into the palms of my hands as I tried to ground myself. My life— no, all our lives— were hanging by a thread. If Kael won the election, it wouldn’t just be me who suffered. Elara, Mom, Dad, Ezra… and Alaric. They would all pay the price. The thought of Alaric in danger sent a sharp pang through my chest, a reminder of how deeply I still cared for him, despite everything.

“I don’t know if a Luna ceremony will work,” Astrid said, her voice cutting through my spiraling thoughts. “I mean, people will say you’re mimicking Kael.”

We were seated around the table at the restaurant, the remnants of our meal scattered between us. Madeline had suggested setting up a Luna ceremony to counter Kael’s growing influence, but the idea felt hollow, like putting a bandage on a gaping wound.

“I agree,” Elara chimed in, her brow furrowed in thought. “We need something big, something explosive. Something that will shake the foundations of Kael’s campaign.”

Madeline sighed, frustration etched into every line of her face. “Things are always going Kael’s way these days. It’s like the Goddess has blessed him personally.”

I bit my tongue, resisting the urge to correct her. It wasn’t the Goddess. It was Kael’s mother, pulling strings behind the scenes, manipulating events to ensure her son’s victory. And I hadn’t been around to disrupt their plans. The guilt of that weighed heavily on me.

“We could reopen the accusations he put on Alaric,” Astrid suggested, her eyes narrowing as she leaned forward. “I’m sure he was hiding something.”

Elara shook her head, her expression worried. “It might backfire. Kael’s too clever. He’ll twist it to make us look desperate.”

Their eyes flicked to me discreetly, gauging my reaction. I felt the weight of their expectations, the unspoken question hanging in the air.

What do you think, Lilac?

My mind raced, searching for a solution. And then it hit me—a memory from my past life. The Miracle Pills. Kael had introduced them to the market, claiming they were a revolutionary breakthrough. But they were a failure, a dangerous one at that. He’d twisted the results, bribed council members, and made them look like a success. If things were following the same timeline, he’d soon hold another conference to introduce a new version of the pills.

“Actually, I have an idea,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me.

But before I could continue, I heard her.

Runa.

‘Don’t trust.’ Just two words.

Her voice was faint, barely a whisper in my mind, but it sent a jolt through me.

'Runa! Oh, Goddess… thank God you’re back. I need help, Runa!' I cried internally, relief and desperation flooding my thoughts. But her presence was fleeting, fading as quickly as it had appeared.

‘No, don’t go… who are you talking about?’ I asked quickly, my heart pounding.

My mind raced. Everyone at this table was a trusted ally. Alexander and Madeline wouldn’t betray me since they were running in the election. Astrid was Madeline’s closest friend, and Elara was mine. That left Elias. My mate.

‘Elias?’ I asked in my head, my stomach twisting with unease.

Runa didn’t reply, but I heard a faint howl, as if she were saying 'yes.'

‘Runa!’ I called for her, but she was already gone, her presence slipping away like smoke.

Come on, Runa! You’ve got to be kidding me! First, you said ‘mate’ and disappeared, leaving me to deal with this man, and now you’re asking me not to trust him? What game are you playing?

My mind was already a tangled mess, and the last thing I needed was this cryptic warning.

“Earth to Lilac,” Elara said, squeezing my arm. “We’re waiting.”

I glanced around the table, my eyes lingering on Elias for a moment too long. I couldn’t trust him. Runa had used what little strength she had left to warn me. There had to be a reason.

“Forget it. It won’t work,” I said, my voice tight.

“Hey, are you okay?” Elias asked, his brow furrowed with concern.

“Yeah,” I replied, forcing a smile that didn’t reach my eyes.
