His Abandoned Luna Chapter 89
|| Lilac’s POV ||
The morning sun cast a golden glow over the council building, its towering structure a testament to the power and history of the werewolf packs. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine and earth, a reminder of the wildness that still lingered even in the heart of the city. I stood at the entrance, my heart pounding in my chest as I took in the sight of the grand marble steps leading up to the imposing double doors. Today was a pivotal day, and the weight of it pressed heavily on my shoulders.
Alexander, Madeline, and Astrid were already inside, their presence a small comfort amidst the tension that had been building since dawn. I took a deep breath and stepped into the building, the cool interior a stark contrast to the warmth outside. The hallway was bustling with activity, alphas and their entourages moving about with purpose. My eyes scanned the room until I found them near a large window, their heads close together in quiet conversation.
“Lilac!” Astrid’s voice rang out, her golden hair catching the sunlight as she waved me over. “You are finally here!”
I forced a smile and joined them, my nerves still on edge. “Yeah, I am sorry. I was a bit occupied.”
Alexander gave me a nod, his expression serious but calm. “We were just going over the strategy for the election. We need to be prepared for anything.”
“Agreed,” I said, glancing around the room. “Any updates on the alphas who’ve submitted their recommendations?”
“Not yet,” Madeline replied, her voice steady. “But we’re hopeful. We’ve got four so far, and if your mystery alpha shows up, we’ll have the fifth.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at me. “Speaking of which, who is this fifth alpha? You’ve been vague about it.”
I hesitated, my gaze flickering toward the entrance. “You’ll see when he shows up.”
Alexander’s expression didn’t change, but I could see the doubt in his eyes. He didn’t press further, though, and we fell into a discussion about the upcoming election. The conversation was tense but focused, each of us contributing ideas and strategies. Astrid suggested reaching out to smaller packs for support, while Madeline emphasized the importance of presenting a united front. Alexander listened intently, his sharp mind already calculating the best moves.
As the minutes ticked by, I kept glancing at the entrance, my anxiety growing with each passing second. Where was he? I pulled out my phone and sent a quick text.
'Are you on your way?'
No reply.
I tried again, 'The council is about to start. Please tell me you’re coming.'
Still nothing.
My heart sank. Had he changed his mind? Had something happened? I couldn’t shake the feeling of disappointment that settled in my chest. I had been so sure he would come for me.
“Lilac,” Alexander’s voice broke through my thoughts. “Is your mystery alpha still coming?”
I forced a smile, though it felt brittle. “He’ll be here. He promised.”
Alexander’s eyes searched mine, but he didn’t push further. Instead, he turned back to the others, continuing the discussion. I tried to focus, but my mind kept drifting back to Alaric. Why wasn’t he answering? Had I misjudged him?
Just as the tension in the room reached its peak, the doors swung open, and a hush fell over the crowd. My heart leapt as I saw him— Alaric, his presence commanding attention even in a room full of alphas, but only when he wanted it. He strode in with an air of confidence, his sharp eyes scanning the room until they landed on me. A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips, and I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
“There he is,” I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Alaric?” Alexander’s voice was filled with surprise, his eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of the man who had just entered.
“Alaric as in Alaric Reventhorn?” Astrid’s eyes widened, her voice tinged with disbelief.
“Yeah, the one and only,” I replied, a small smile playing on my lips despite the judgmental looks from the others.
“Lilac, are you sure he’s the right choice?” Madeline asked, her tone cautious.
“Besides, is he even an alpha? I didn’t know that,” Astrid added, her brow furrowed in thought.
“He’s the alpha of the Blood Moon pack,” Alexander confirmed, his voice low. His eyes were unreadable, but I could sense the unease in him. I knew no one trusted Alaric. The rumors surrounding him were enough to make anyone wary.
“Yeah, that’s correct,” I said, my voice firm despite the doubt in the air.
“Well, despite the rumors, he’s quite handsome. I wonder if he’s single,” Astrid commented, her tone light but her eyes sharp as they flicked toward me. My cheeks flushed, and I quickly looked away.
“He is. And he has quite a bit of presence as well,” Madeline added, her gaze thoughtful.
“He does, but only when he wants to be seen,” Alexander said, his voice tight. “He was at the party at my pack, but no one noticed him except for my father and me. And now, everyone notices him. It’s as if people only see him when he wants them to.”
Alaric did had his own mysterious ways! I didn’t even know he was an alpha until he told me. Whatever it was, he could make my stomach flip with just one gaze.
“Interesting,” Astrid hummed, her eyes narrowing as she watched Alaric approach.
