|| Lilac’s POV ||

The moment I stepped into Elara’s apartment, the weight of their stares hit me like a tidal wave. Elara, Madeline, Astrid, and Alexander— all four of them were there, their expressions a mix of worry, curiosity, and something else I couldn’t quite place. It was three in the morning, and the air was thick with tension.

“Goddess, look at you,” Elara said, her voice a mix of concern and exasperation as she took in my disheveled appearance.

I leaned against the door, my legs trembling beneath me.

“I know it’s wrong, okay? I know I shouldn’t have. But I can’t. I can’t stay away from him. Being with Alaric doesn’t feel wrong,” I said, my voice breaking as the words spilled out.

Elara didn’t hesitate. She crossed the room in two strides and pulled me into a tight hug. I clung to her, my fingers digging into her shoulders as I tried to steady myself.

“I think you should sit down first. We need to tell you something,” Astrid said, her tone unusually serious.

I let Elara guide me to the couch, my body sinking into the cushions as if it had forgotten how to hold itself up. Elara handed me a glass of water, and I took it with shaky hands, the cool liquid doing little to calm the storm inside me.

Madeline sat across from me, her eyes locked on mine.

“Lilac, I need to ask you something. Have you slept with Alaric?” she asked, her voice calm but firm.

I hesitated, my cheeks burning with shame.

“Yes,” I mumbled, my voice barely audible.

“When? I need to know the exact time,” she pressed, her tone leaving no room for evasion.

“I’m sorry… I really couldn’t control myself,” I said, my voice trembling.

“That’s not why I’m asking you. This is important,” Madeline said, her expression unreadable.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.

“Think carefully. When was it?” Astrid chimed in, her eyes narrowing as she leaned forward.

“I don’t know exactly. His pack was around thirty minutes from the brunch place. So, around noon or just past noon, maybe. And then in the evening…” I trailed off, my voice faltering as the memories of the day flooded back.

“Are you sure?” Madeline asked, her eyes wide with something I couldn’t quite place.

“Why are you asking?” I demanded, my voice rising in frustration.

Madeline exchanged a glance with Alexander before standing up.

“Well, when you… cheat on your soulmate, they feel pain,” she said, her voice steady but tinged with sadness.

Before I could process her words, she turned to Astrid and kissed her— a simple peck on the lips. Astrid’s eyes widened in shock, and she pulled back, yelling, “What the hell?”

But that wasn’t what caught our attention. Alexander growled, clutching his stomach as he doubled over in pain. His face contorted, and it was clear he was in agony.

Madeline rushed to his side, her hands cupping his face as she kissed his cheeks.

“I’m sorry, babe. Are you okay?” she asked, her voice filled with guilt.

“Don’t pull this stunt again,” Alexander growled, pulling her closer. His glare shifted to Astrid, who raised her hands in defense.

“Don’t look at me! I’m not into this,” Astrid said, her voice laced with indignation.

Madeline turned back to me, her expression serious. “So, like you can see, the pain is unbearable when a mate cheats on the other.”

My stomach dropped.

“Oh, Goddess! Elias… he must be in tremendous pain!” I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth as the realization hit me. Tears streamed down my face as the guilt threatened to consume me. What had I done?

“No, he didn’t,” Astrid said, her voice cutting through my panic.

“What?” I stared at her, my mind struggling to process her words.

“Alexander and I were in a meeting with him during lunch. Which matches your timeline,” Madeline explained.

“I don’t understand,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

“We don’t either. You’re soulmates. You supposed to have only him in your eyes, and that’s clearly not the case. On top of that, he didn’t feel the pain he should have,” Astrid said, her tone filled with confusion.

“Maybe he felt the pain but covered it up,” I mumbled, though even as I said it, I knew it didn’t make sense.

“Not possible,” Alexander said, his voice firm.

“Are you sure he’s your mate? I mean, did you confirm this with your wolf?” Astrid asked, her brow furrowed.

“Yes, she did. She said ‘mate,’” I replied, my voice trembling.

"Also, she said not to trust him. That's why when we were having lunch on the other day, I didn't talk about the plan about miracle pills," I told them

“There’s definitely something that’s not right. Mates trust each other blindly,” Madeline said, her tone thoughtful.

“I know, but my wolf…” I trailed off, unable to explain the truth about Runa’s absence.

“Yeah, especially your wolf. Like if Alex and I are fighting, she’ll always take his side,” Madeline said, her voice softening.

“That’s because I’m always right, and your wolf is more reasonable than you,” Alexander teased, though his tone was gentle.

“That’s not the point. No matter what you do, your wolf will always want to be with your mate. There’s no denying it,” Madeline added.

I held my head in my hands, the weight of their words pressing down on me. My wolf was dormant. Was that why I didn’t feel the bond? What could I do? I was supposed to mate with my soulmate to save her, but the thought of being with Elias repulsed me. I felt relieved when he was away.
