|| Lilac’s POV ||

“Maybe I can help you,” Madeline said, her voice breaking through my thoughts. She exchanged a glance with Alexander.

Astrid continued, “the Moonvale pack has a myth. Some werewolves— she-wolves— can read and share memories after finding their soulmates. I’d always heard of it growing up, but I never met anyone who could actually do it. The pack members thought it was just a myth… until Madeline found her soulmate.”

“You mean to say you could read my mind?” I asked, my voice tinged with disbelief.

“Not really, just your memories. My wolf could sense everything your wolf did, and maybe we can find out why the bond is… weird between you two,” Madeline explained.

“Give it a try,” Elara whispered, her voice filled with encouragement.

“Yeah, she might find something that you haven’t realized yet,” Astrid added.

“Okay,” I said, my voice trembling.

Madeline sat beside me, her hands reaching for mine.

“I want you to imagine that evening as vividly as possible,” she said, her voice calm but firm.

I closed my eyes, my mind racing back to that evening. The pull I felt toward Alaric, the stranger’s hand on my shoulder, Runa’s voice saying “mate.” I focused on every detail, every sensation, every emotion.

Suddenly, Madeline gasped, and her eyes changed color, the rims turning silver as she stared at me.

“Hello, Lilac,” a different voice said, deep and resonant. “I’m Maya, Madeline’s wolf.”

“Hello,” I said, my voice trembling.

“I see what you’ve seen. Your wolf seems to be weakened somehow. I can only feel her memories vaguely,” Maya said.

“I know,” I admitted.

“She did say ‘mate.’ But…” Maya trailed off, her voice filled with uncertainty.

“But?” I asked, my heart pounding.

“Let me show you something,” Maya said, and suddenly, I was pulled into Madeline’s memories. The overwhelming scent of mint filled my nostrils as Alexander closed in. All I wanted was to hug him, kiss him, and… oh, Goddess. These were Madeline’s sensations, her thoughts, her bond.

I had never felt that way toward Elias, but I felt it toward Alaric.

“I see it now,” I said, my voice trembling as I was pulled back into the present.

“Now you understand the difference,” Maya said.

“Yes,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.

“What is it? What difference?” Astrid asked, her voice filled with curiosity.

“Her wolf said ‘mate’ when she met Elias, but I don’t sense her having any pull toward him,” Maya explained.

“Is that because my wolf is weak?” I asked.

“No. It doesn’t matter. In that case, she should get stronger while you’re around him. But it seems to have the reverse effect on your wolf,” Maya said.

“You’re right,” I admitted.

“There could be two things. One, she’ll only gain her strength, and you’ll feel the complete bond once you complete mating,” Maya said.

“I thought of this too, but the idea of being with him… it just repulses me,” I said, my voice filled with honesty.

“Then the second possibility might be true. Probably Elias isn’t your fated one,” Maya said, her words sending a shockwave through the room.

“But Runa said ‘mate,’ and Elias claimed the same,” I said, my voice trembling.

“Yes, but probably Runa didn’t say those words for him,” Maya replied.

“No way,” Elara gasped.

“And if that’s the case, then you’re in danger. Someone’s purposefully weakening your wolf so that you can’t get out of this mate situation. And Elias is a danger to all of us,” Maya confirmed.

My head was spinning, but the second possibility made more sense to me.

“Then why wouldn’t anyone else claim her as their mate? Her wolf clearly sensed the bond,” Astrid asked.

“Yes, she did. Unfortunately, I don’t have all the answers,” Maya replied.

“This is bad,” Alexander said, his voice filled with worry.

“We have to find out if Elias is your mate or not. It seems like there’s not much pull from your side. We have to see if it’s the same from his side,” Madeline said.

“Just reject him and get over with it,” Elara said.

“No, I can’t. He’s not just a warrior anymore— he’s a council member. If I reject him without justification, it’ll bring disaster for all of us. Kael and Cassandra will use this to dig our graves,” I said.

“You’re right. You have to take measured steps here. This is a very sensitive topic,” Astrid said.

“Goddess, what do I do?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“For starters, you could see if Elias has the true bond or not,” Maya said.

“I can’t help you beyond this,” Maya said as she retreated, and Madeline inhaled sharply, collapsing onto the couch. Alexander was by her side in an instant.

“Is she okay?” I asked, my voice filled with concern.

“This is the side effect,” Astrid said.

“Thanks, Madeline,” I whispered.

“Not a problem,” she said, her voice faint but filled with warmth.

“You’re amazing,” I said.

“Well, you did great too,” she replied.

“I didn’t do anything,” I said, confused.

“You see, I can read memories. So, whatever you feel, I feel. If you tampered with memories, that’s what I’d see. You put a pretty clear picture out there,” she explained.

“I see,” I said, my voice trembling.

“But we have bigger problems now. Is Elias really your mate? We need to find out,” Elara said.

I thought of him as a good person, but the doubts were growing.

“Well, she’ll feel better if he isn’t,” Astrid said playfully.

“Yeah, she can go running back to her Alaric then,” Elara teased, and everyone giggled.
