His Abandoned Luna Chapter 121
|| Lilac’s POV ||
Together, we dragged the unconscious men into the bushes, hiding them from view.
“I’ve mindlinked my beta,” Alexander said. “He’ll take them away.”
“Good,” I replied, my mind racing. “You stay with Madeline and give them a good scene. The moon is full, and the air is crisp. You know what I mean.”
Alexander nodded, pulling Madeline closer. He kissed her deeply, his arms wrapping around her protectively. I stayed nearby, keeping watch, my senses on high alert.
Soon, we heard footsteps approaching. Alexander’s beta arrived, his expression grim as he hauled the unconscious men away. Moments later, the rustling of leaves signaled the arrival of the reporters.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding. We had made it in time.
As the reporters emerged from the shadows, their cameras flashing, Alexander and Madeline were ready. They stood together, their arms wrapped around each other, their faces glowing with happiness. The reporters snapped photos, their voices filled with excitement as they captured the perfect shot.
I stayed in the background, my heart still racing. The danger had passed, but the unease lingered. Coco’s plan had been thwarted, but I knew this wasn’t the end. She would try again, and I had to be ready.
I slipped back into the grand hall, my heart still racing from the confrontation in the garden. The opulent room was alive with music, laughter, and the clinking of glasses, but the tension in my chest refused to ease. I smoothed out my dress, the soft fabric of my muted pink gown brushing against my skin as I tried to compose myself. The night was far from over, and I couldn’t afford to let my guard down.
As I stepped further into the room, my eyes instinctively sought out Alaric. He stood near the edge of the crowd, his tall frame commanding attention even in a room full of alphas and dignitaries. Our eyes met, and for a moment, the noise around me faded into the background. His gaze was intense, filled with unspoken questions. Are you okay? his eyes seemed to ask.
I gave him a small smile, a silent reassurance that I was fine. There was an invisible connection between us, something that went beyond words. We didn’t need to speak to understand each other. A single look was enough— a glance that conveyed trust, concern, and something deeper, something I wasn’t ready to name.
I was lost in his eyes when a familiar voice cut through the moment, sharp and saccharine. “There you are!”
Coco.
I turned to face her, my smile fading as I forced myself to remain calm. What did she want now? Her presence was like a dark cloud, casting a shadow over the room.
“Handsome, isn’t he?” Coco chuckled, her eyes flicking toward Alaric. Her tone was light, but there was a venomous edge to her words.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I replied, my voice steady despite the unease coiling in my stomach.
Coco leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Be honest, Lilac. The Reventhorn brothers are quite handsome. The only difference is, only one brother will rise to be the alpha king. And I wondered which one that might be! ”
I chuckled, though there was no humor in it. “I don’t think that’s on his wishlist. But are you worried about Kael?”
Coco’s smile widened, her eyes gleaming with malice.
“Maybe. A toast?” she said, handing me a glass of wine.
I hesitated, my fingers tightening around the stem of the glass. What was she up to now? Poison? Drugs? My mind raced with possibilities, but I couldn’t refuse without drawing attention.
“Don’t be worried, Lilac,” Coco said, her voice loud enough for the people around us to hear. “I’m not going to poison you at my Luna ceremony. I’m only wishing you good luck.”
The onlookers smiled, their curious eyes on us. I forced a smile, raising the glass. “Thanks.”
I took a small sip, my eyes never leaving hers. If something was wrong, at least everyone would know she had given me the wine.
“To your new future,” I said, raising my glass.
Coco’s smile didn’t waver.
“To your new life of love and happiness,” she replied, her tone dripping with something I couldn’t quite place. What was she up to now?
We both took small sips, and she walked away, her laughter trailing behind her like a warning.
“What’s going on with her? This is the second time in a row she has shown up,” Elara said, appearing at my side. Her brow was furrowed, her eyes following Coco’s retreating figure.
“No idea,” I replied, my voice low.
Astrid joined us, her expression thoughtful. “Something doesn’t fit. I can’t pinpoint what, but… something is wrong.”
“I hear you,” Elara said, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’ve got the same feeling. My wolf is restless as well.”
I nodded, my eyes scanning the room. “Relax and keep your eyes open. We’ll figure it out.”
Just then, Madeline and Alexander walked into the hall, their arms linked. Madeline looked better now, her color returning and her smile genuine. But I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. My eyes darted to Coco, who stood across the room, her lips curling into a smirk.
Thank the Goddess her plan failed, I thought. Maybe she doesn’t know it yet.
“Where have you two been?” Astrid asked, her tone teasing but her eyes sharp.
Alexander smiled, his arm tightening around Madeline. “Well, it’s a nice evening. We went for a walk.”
Madeline leaned into him, her smile soft but steady.
“All good?” I asked, my voice gentle.
“Yeah… thanks,” she replied, her gratitude clear in her eyes.
