His Abandoned Luna Chapter 98
|| Alaric’s Perspective ||
My blood boiled as I watched Kael and Cassandra from across the room. The way they had tried to twist the situation, to make Lilac the villain, made my wolf snarl beneath the surface. Hunter was clawing at the edges of my control, demanding retribution. I wanted to tear them apart, to make them pay for every ounce of pain they had caused Lilac. But I held back, barely. My fists clenched at my sides, my jaw tight as I fought to keep my composure.
Kael was an idiot, a puppet at most and Cassandra was a cunning bitch and a whore. She used to claim my mother was close to her. But it didn't even take a year after my mother's death, for her to spread her legs before my father. She did everything she could to torture me and push me away. I was just a child back then but she showed no mercy.
Alexander’s voice broke through the haze of my anger.
“Don’t make a scene. I know them well. Stay calm and they won't be able to push it any further. Let’s grab a drink,” he said, his tone calm but firm. He stepped closer, his presence a grounding force as he placed a hand on my shoulder and steered me away from the chaos.
I let him lead me, my eyes flicking back to Lilac one last time. She stood frozen, her expression a mix of surprise and confusion as she processed the Alpha King’s unexpected defense of her. I didn’t trust it. My father wasn’t a generous man. He didn’t do anything without a reason, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just another one of his games.
“She’ll be fine,” Alexander said, his voice pulling me back to the present. I glanced over to see Astrid and Madeline stepping in, their presence a comforting shield as they guided Lilac away from the crowd.
“Thanks,” I mumbled, though the word felt inadequate. Alexander had stepped in when I was on the verge of losing control, and for that, I was grateful.
We reached the bar, and Alexander ordered two old fashioneds without asking. I didn’t protest. I needed the drink more than I cared to admit. I took the glass he handed me and downed it in one go, the burn of the whiskey doing little to calm the storm inside me.
“So, what’s the deal here?” Alexander asked, his voice low but serious. He leaned against the bar, his eyes fixed on me.
“What deal?” I replied, playing dumb. I wasn’t in the mood to explain myself, but something in his tone made me pause.
“Don’t play dumb,” he said, his voice sharp. “You wrote my recommendation. What game are you playing? What deal did you make with Lilac?”
I studied him for a moment, trying to gauge his intentions. Was he asking out of concern for Lilac? The thought made me feel slightly better. She had good allies, people who genuinely cared for her. That was important.
“What makes you think I made a deal with her?” I asked, my tone neutral.
“Why else would you help me?” he countered, his voice firm.
He had a point. I wasn’t known for my generosity, especially when it came to politics. But this wasn’t about politics. This was about Lilac.
“What do you think I asked from her?” I smirked, curious to see where his mind would go.
Alexander paused, his brow furrowing as he considered the question. “I honestly can’t tell. Clearly, you two aren’t mates since Lilac is still looking for hers. But the way you two danced…” He trailed off, his expression thoughtful.
“I asked her to accompany me for the evening,” I said, deciding to give him a partial truth. “I thought it might push Kael just a little.”
Alexander’s eyes widened. “Was it your plan or hers?”
“Does it matter?” I replied, my tone light but my eyes hard.
“This could look bad on her,” he said, his voice tinged with concern.
“But it will improve my image,” I countered, turning to leave. Alexander cared for Lilac, and that was enough for me to trust him— for now.
|| Lilac’s Perspective ||
The moment Alaric and I danced felt like a dream, a fleeting escape from the chaos of the evening. For those few minutes, I felt alive, truly alive, in a way I hadn’t in years. But of course, Kael had to ruin it. He always did. The way he stormed onto the dance floor, his anger and jealousy on full display, shattered the fragile peace I had found in Alaric’s arms.
What surprised me most, though, was the Alpha King’s defense of me. He wasn’t known for his generosity, and his sudden support felt… off. What game was he playing? I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it, something I wasn’t seeing.
“Lilac, let’s get some food,” Astrid’s voice broke through my thoughts. She appeared at my side, her arm looping through mine as she pulled me away from the center of the room. Madeline and Elara joined us soon after, their presence a comforting shield against the lingering tension.
“Thanks,” I said, my voice soft as we retreated to a quieter corner.
The moment we were out of earshot, the three of them pounced.
“Okay, out with it,” Astrid said, her eyes narrowing as she studied me.
“What’s going on between you two?” Madeline added, her tone curious but firm.
The questions came one after another like a rapid fire!
