Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 113
Scarlett wanted to get out of the car immediately, but it had already started moving. Unless she jumped out, there was no escape.
Fortunately, when they passed 3A Skylake Road, they spotted Tiffany and her group at the intersection and stopped to talk.
"Where are you taking Ms. Seymour, Mr. Howard?" Tiffany asked. She knew Sebastian looked after Scarlett, so seeing them together didn't seem strange to her.
Sebastian glanced at Scarlett, whose face clearly showed her desire to escape. Amusement flickered in his eyes. "Grandfather's birthday is next week. I'm taking her to choose a gift."
This was naturally on Tiffany's calendar as well. She nodded with a smile and asked, "Where are you planning to go?"
"There's an auction at the Moonstone Assembly Club."
Hearing this, Tiffany's eyes brightened. "If you don't mind, could you take Sylvia along? It's time she made her debut."
Making a debut meant presenting a gift independently, signifying that someone had reached a certain level of maturity.
Sebastian didn't mind helping the Myers family. The two families had good relations, and since Sylvia was an only daughter, their paths would increasingly cross in the future.
Noticing Scarlett's sudden interest, Sebastian smiled slightly. "Sure. It's my pleasure."
"That's perfect. I'll leave her to you then," Tiffany smiled, calling for someone to fetch Sylvia.
She seemed to have forgotten Sebastian's previous cancellation.
Sylvia appeared quickly, looking somewhat reluctant. When she first saw Sebastian sitting in the Alphard, she couldn't help sighing, but still greeted him politely. "Bash."
Sebastian looked at her, his eyes clear. "Syl."
Sylvia couldn't shake the feeling that Sebastian disliked hearing her call him by that nickname. She secretly stuck out her tongue—if he didn't like it, well, she didn't want to use it either!
Only when she got in the car and saw Scarlett did her face light up. "Scar!"
Their relationship had grown closer, even progressing to using nicknames.
The car left Skylake Road but turned onto a bridge at a fork five miles away.
More familiar with the route, Sylvia frowned slightly. "This isn't the way to the Moonstone Assembly Club, is it?"
"We're going to Eaglecrest Hill first," Scarlett explained, leaning close to her.
"To pick up Adeline?" Sylvia pouted, not looking particularly happy.
Scarlett was curious but didn't dare ask with Sebastian present.
---
At Sunset Lake Villa, Adeline was already waiting. Seeing the Alphard approach, she smiled and walked to the roadside.
The electric gate opened automatically.
"Sebi!" Adeline called out as soon as she saw Sebastian.
As the car stopped, Scarlett held her breath. She saw a hand reach into the car—slightly plump, clearly a woman's hand.
Beside her, Sylvia made a small scoffing sound.
Scarlett glanced at her, but quickly looked back at Sylvia's prompting.
Sebastian took the hand and helped Adeline into the car.
"Thank you, Sebi," Adeline said with a smile. But when she looked up and saw the two women in the back, her smile faltered. "Oh, Scarlett and Sylvia are here too."
Scarlett nodded. "Hello, Ms. Morgan."
Sylvia was more casual, grinning broadly. "Hi, Adeline!"
Her naturally sweet voice was deliberately pitched higher, making it sickeningly sweet.
Adeline smiled and took the seat next to Sebastian.
With everyone finally present, the car descended from the mountain road, joined the main road, and headed east toward the city.
At the Moonstone Assembly Club, they arrived early for the auction and went to a waiting room to rest.
"Scarlett, are you also here to choose a gift for Mr. George Howard?" Adeline asked gently after sitting down.
Scarlett nodded. "And you, Ms. Morgan?"
"Of course. Though Sebi also said he wanted to choose some gifts for me," Adeline replied with a sweet smile.
Scarlett found that smile somewhat painful to look at. As she watched Adeline, she couldn't help thinking about how she had lived as this woman's replacement for five years. The thought filled her with sadness.
Just then, Sylvia stood up, pulling Scarlett with her.
"Come with me to the restroom. Excuse us for a moment, Adeline," she said with a smile.
Adeline nodded, watching them leave.
As Scarlett walked out of the waiting room, she heard Adeline's voice behind her.
"Sebi, what items are in this auction?"
Once they were far enough away, Sylvia complained, "So annoying. Why couldn't she just stay abroad?"
She was clearly referring to Adeline.
Scarlett didn't understand. "What do you mean? You don't like her?"
Sylvia looked puzzled by the question.
"Haven't you met her when you were younger?"
Scarlett shook her head. Not only had she never met Adeline, she'd never even heard of her.
"Are you really a Seymour?" Sylvia pouted suspiciously, but quickly waved it off. "She always acts one way to your face and another behind your back. Only Bash likes her."
Scarlett frowned, thinking Adeline sounded increasingly like Edith.
If that was the case, why hadn't Sebastian chosen Edith as a replacement?
"I can't stand her. When we were kids at a banquet, she broke a porcelain vase and blamed it on me! My grandfather gave me such a scolding because of her!"
Sylvia became agitated just recalling the incident.
Listening to this, Scarlett thought Adeline sounded even more like Edith.
"Seriously, what's wrong with Bash? What does he see in her? Is he blind or something?" Sylvia snorted as she washed her hands. "Looks like she's planning to attend George's birthday celebration."
"Isn't is natural? She's the Morgan family's daughter, right?" Scarlett wasn't familiar with the old affairs, only knowing that the Morgan family was gone.
Sylvia gave a derisive laugh. "What Morgan family daughter? She's nobody. If Bash wasn't protecting her, who would even call her Ms. Morgan?"
Scarlett fell silent, listening to Sylvia's explanation.
"The Morgan family committed some crime ten years ago. Almost the entire family went to prison except for Adeline. They say Bash begged George to spare her. But as soon as she was safe, she fled abroad, abandoning Bash."
"I suppose she's lucky that after all these years, Bash still can't forget her," Sylvia sighed with a shake of her head.
She seemed to think Sebastian deserved better.
Scarlett listened, feeling a dull ache in her heart.
So Sebastian's love had always been with Adeline, while she was merely a tool for his amusement.
She took a deep breath, mustering the strength to comfort Sylvia. "What can we do? We can't control who Bash likes."
To her surprise, Sylvia fixed her gaze on Scarlett's face.
"You're prettier than her, and kinder too. Plus, you're close to Bash. Surely you could win him over?"
Scarlett's heart skipped a beat at these words.
"What are you talking about?" She immediately objected, though her earlobes turned red.
Seeing this, Sylvia knew she'd struck a chord and smiled mischievously. "Bash was young and foolish back then. Surely he's smarter now."
