Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 47
Chris and his group were already walking toward Scarlett as she climbed out of the car with the help of a staff member.
"Scarlett!" Dennis couldn't hide his excitement, waving his arms enthusiastically. "You were amazing! One minute forty seconds for a non-professional!"
Chris, however, gave her a reproachful look. "You held back, didn't you?"
Scarlett shook her head as she removed her helmet. "No, I haven't raced in a long time. This performance is already quite good."
Orion approached with a smile. "I had no idea you had such talent. Looks like I've found quite a treasure."
Hearing this, Scarlett couldn't help but feel exasperated. "Mr. Watson, your words could easily be misinterpreted."
"What's wrong with that? Being linked romantically with you would be my honor, Honey." Orion paid no attention to Scarlett's warning and even blew her a kiss.
Even Dennis couldn't stand it anymore. "Orion, stop messing around. Scarlett isn't interested in you."
Scarlett wouldn't have dared to be so blunt, but she couldn't deny Dennis's words either. She could only laugh awkwardly.
After more light conversation, they left the racetrack to go for a meal together. Dennis had chosen a restaurant close to the track—a perfect spot for their gathering.
However, just as they entered the restaurant, before they could even find their seats, they heard an affected female voice from behind.
"Seb, why come all this way to eat at a place like this?"
Scarlett immediately frowned upon hearing that voice. The sickeningly sweet tone was unmistakably Edith's. She didn't need to turn around to know who had just entered.
Chris glanced back and looked troubled. He whispered to Scarlett, "Should we go somewhere else?"
Thanks to the morning's announcement, even Dennis had heard about the animosity between them. Being close to Chris, he often heard stories about Scarlett and didn't believe the Howard Group's announcement. Seeing Scarlett's expression darken, he could understand the tension.
Orion also looked back, but unlike the others, he turned his head completely. When his eyes met Sebastian's, he smiled directly at him.
Sebastian had spotted Scarlett immediately upon entering. She was surrounded by two men and accompanied by a boy who was nearly an adult.
Edith also noticed the four people ahead.
At first, she paid little attention, but gradually she found the woman in the middle familiar.
"Scarlett?" Edith's voice rang out behind them.
Annoyed, Scarlett pressed her lips together and turned around.
Edith was surprised to see Scarlett turn, not expecting to encounter her here. Her eyes scanned the people surrounding Scarlett.
Moving in the same social circles, Edith could identify most of them. Her gaze lingered briefly on Chris before shifting to Orion. She frowned, thinking Scarlett had been lucky enough to attract Chris, but now she had Orion as well.
Edith narrowed her eyes, her gaze circling Scarlett's pretty face, burning with jealousy.
But with Sebastian beside her, Edith could only cover her mouth and laugh lightly. "It really is Scarlett. How is it that every time I see you, you're with these wealthy young men? I hope you haven't lost your senses and taken up your mother's old profession?"
Scarlett's background wasn't exactly a secret in wealthy circles, largely thanks to Edith's gossip. Everyone understood what Edith was implying.
Scarlett's face hardened. "I wasn't aware of my mother's 'old profession.' Ms. Seymour, do you think you can say whatever you want without consequences?"
Edith just smiled, contempt in her eyes. "Everyone knows your mother came from a hostess club background. Like mother, like daughter, otherwise how else would you..."
She left her sentence unfinished, but her eyes swept meaningfully over the men beside Scarlett.
Her implication was even clearer now.
Dennis immediately darkened, about to speak, but Chris beat him to it.
"Mr. Howard, please control your fiancée. Making such baseless accusations—she should be careful not to bite her tongue!"
Sebastian, however, looked at Scarlett.
She stood coldly behind Chris, with Orion at her side.
His gaze lingered on their close arms, his voice cooling. "Baseless? It doesn't look that way to me."
Edith's eyes brightened, and she raised her chin triumphantly, the perfect picture of petty victory.
Scarlett froze, looking sharply at Sebastian.
But Sebastian, who had been staring at her just a moment ago, now averted his gaze, as if his previous attention had been merely Scarlett's imagination.
She looked at him, her heart constricting. She pressed her lips together and turned away. "Let's go."
Chris nodded immediately.
As they headed for the exit, Edith, seeing Scarlett leaving, became even more smug. "Scarlett, I advise you to have some self-respect. You're still a daughter of the Seymour family. Don't follow your mother's example and do something that would disgrace—"
Before she could finish, Scarlett lost control. She raised her hand and slapped Edith hard across the face!
The sharp sound was particularly jarring in the quiet space.
"My mother disgraced the family? Why don't you talk about David? If he couldn't control his urges, how could my mother have gotten pregnant!"
Scarlett gritted her teeth, her hand trembling.
Edith held her cheek. "You! You dare to hit me!"
"I certainly do!" Scarlett raised her hand to strike again, but Orion caught her around the waist.
"Seb!" Edith hadn't forgotten she was with Sebastian and immediately threw herself into his arms.
Sebastian's face had turned completely dark, his voice forced through clenched teeth. "Scarlett!"
"What?" Scarlett glared back at him.
Sebastian glanced at Orion's arm around her waist, his jaw tightening. "Apologize."
Scarlett scoffed, breaking free from Orion's hold, and turned to leave.
Seeing her go, Chris and Dennis quickly followed.
Orion, however, didn't immediately follow. Instead, he looked at Sebastian's dark face and offered advice, "Mr. Howard, you're losing more than you gain here."
As he spoke, he glanced meaningfully at Edith, who was still clinging to Sebastian.
Sebastian snorted coldly. "Mr. Watson, maybe you should mind your own business and not get involved in other people's messes."
Hearing this warning, Orion remained unfazed. He shrugged casually. "Well, Mr. Howard, you know me—I can't help but step in to clean up messes, especially if there are beautiful ladies involved."
With that and another smile, he turned to follow Scarlett and the others.
Still waiting for an apology, Edith began to play the victim again.
"Seb, I was hit," she said, on the verge of tears.
Sebastian frowned irritably. "I know. I'll make it right."
Hearing this promise, Edith smiled and embraced him again, despite his resistance. "I knew you'd always be good to me!"
