Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 89

6 min 2 views

This turn of events was completely unexpected for Scarlett. She immediately turned her head, and though she didn't speak, her eyes were filled with curiosity.

"The matter is still under investigation," Sebastian said, unwilling to reveal more details.

Scarlett frowned. If her mouth hadn't been in pain, she would have cursed at him.

Just then, the hospital room door was suddenly pushed open. Even before the person appeared, their voice preceded them.

"Scarlett! Scarlett!"

From that energetic call, Scarlett immediately knew who it was. She quickly looked toward the doorway, and sure enough, Chris's face appeared a moment later.

"Scarlett!" Chris still had a travel pillow around his neck, and his hair was disheveled, clearly not having been groomed.

Scarlett immediately realized he must have rushed over right after landing from his international competition.

But she hadn't sent him any message, and no one around her would have contacted Chris—how did he know?

Despite her questions, Scarlett was happy to see Chris at this moment. Unable to smile broadly due to her injuries, she managed a small smile and gestured for him to sit down.

"What happened? I heard someone from the Seymour family did this to you. Who was it?" Chris demanded before his backside even touched the chair. "Was it Brianna?"

Scarlett shook her head, glancing at the ignored Sebastian.

Chris followed her gaze. Upon seeing Sebastian, his expression immediately turned unpleasant and awkward. "You did this?"

"Did you forget to bring your brain back from the competition?" Sebastian frowned, responding coldly.

"I know it wasn't you," Chris said reluctantly, his mouth twisted in a grimace.

He understood Sebastian—a man as silent as stone, always carrying himself with superiority. Hitting women was something he simply wouldn't do.

But Chris also understood Scarlett. Though they maintained some formality in their interactions, they genuinely knew each other well.

"Then you know who hit her. Tell me, who was it?"

Sebastian looked Chris up and down, warning him leisurely, "Mr. Wright, you would do well to rein in this habit of meddling in others' affairs."

Chris merely snorted coldly, clearly not taking Sebastian's words seriously.

Chris brought news three days later. By then, the swelling on Scarlett's face had subsided considerably. Though she still couldn't open her mouth wide, she could eat normally.

When Chris arrived, Scarlett was eating pudding made by Libbie.

"Adele is dead!" Chris announced as soon as he entered.

Scarlett already knew this and wasn't surprised. She only asked, "What exactly happened? Was it really suicide?"

She recalled Irene's words from that day.

Chris's expression grew troubled. "It's hard to say. There's not much information available, and my second brother told me not to dig any deeper."

At the mention of Shawn, Scarlett paused, then followed up, "Speaking of which, since I can't follow up on the project, is Shawn upset with me?"

Chris hadn't expected this question. He frowned. "Shawn is angry? No, not at all."

"I sent him a message a few days ago, telling him I couldn't follow the project for a while, but he never replied," Scarlett explained, finishing her pudding and placing it on the bedside table.

Chris waved dismissively. "How could he be? Remember when I came to see you before, right after I landed?"

Scarlett nodded, indicating for him to continue.

"It was actually him who told me about your injury. He specifically asked me to come check on you."

Hearing this, Scarlett was shocked. "Shawn asked you to check on me?"

Chris nodded. Seeing Scarlett's surprised expression, he couldn't help but laugh. "He has very good sources. Except for information from the Howard family, he can find out almost anything else."

Scarlett was still surprised, but thinking about it, she realized it made sense. Shawn was the bureau chief—it was natural that he would be aware of significant events in Sovereign City.

"By the way, there's something I need to tell you," Chris said, frowning as he looked at Scarlett, hesitation in his eyes.

Scarlett tilted her head questioningly.

Chris glanced around. "Has Sebastian been visiting you recently?"

Scarlett didn't understand why he was bringing up Sebastian. She frowned and shook her head.

Since that day when she woke up and saw him, only Libbie and Mark had come to visit. Sebastian was nowhere to be seen.

"His engagement ceremony with Edith has been moved up."

Chris's words caused Scarlett to freeze. "Moved up?"

Knowing this news might hurt Scarlett, Chris continued nonetheless. "Yes. I heard he requested it himself. The Seymour family agreed to keep Adele's death quiet so they could proceed with the engagement sooner."

Scarlett felt as if needles were piercing her chest. She took a deep breath. "How soon?"

"It's happening in the next couple of days. Our family has already received an invitation." Chris reached into his bag and pulled out a pristine invitation.

Scarlett took it. It was indeed for the engagement ceremony between the Howard and Seymour families.

Opening it, she saw Sebastian and Edith's names written inside. The craftsmanship was luxurious and refined, very much in the Howard family's style.

Was he really that impatient?

This thought flashed through Scarlett's mind as she raised her hand to touch her cheek.

The slight stinging reminded her of everything she had endured at the Seymour Villa. And Sebastian was so eager to get engaged to someone from a family like that?

Scarlett's heart sank inch by inch. She unconsciously fidgeted with the invitation, biting her lip repeatedly.

"Don't cry. He's not worth it." Even as a fellow member of a prominent family, Chris felt Sebastian was being too cruel.

He handed her a tissue. Scarlett took it but didn't wipe her tears, just clutching it in her hand. "Will you go?"

"Of course. These kinds of events require attendance." Chris nodded, though his reluctance was evident.

Scarlett lowered her eyes, looking at the date on the invitation. It wasonly two days away.

That evening, Scarlett received a text message from Edith.

It contained updated information about the engagement ceremony, ending with cute, playful text insisting that Scarlett must attend.

Scarlett frowned and immediately blocked her. Then she lay in bed watching TV. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and she decided to block Sebastian as well.

By coincidence, just as she blocked him, Sebastian sent her a message: [Discharge tomorrow.]

The message showed as failed to send the moment it was sent.

Sebastian had never encountered this situation before. He tried sending another message, but it also failed to deliver.

He pulled over to the side of the road and called her, but the call showed as "in use."

That night, the silver-black Bentley parked in the hospital garage.

When Sebastian entered the room, a TV drama was playing, and Scarlett was already asleep. He walked over, took the phone from her hand, examined it briefly, and removed himself from her blacklist.

Meanwhile, at the mall entrance, Edith angrily stamped her foot as she watched Mark park the car and walk toward her. "Where's Seb?"

"Mr. Howard had something to attend to. I'll escort you back, Ms. Seymour," Mark smiled.

Edith was displeased. "Doesn't he know we're about to get engaged?"

Mark's smile didn't reach his eyes. "That's something everyone in Sovereign City knows."
