Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 62

5 min 2 views

Scarlett recognized the man only when she heard the name "Chris"—he was from the Wright family. That explained his familiar appearance.

The Wright family had three sons: Chris, the youngest, and his twin older brothers who had gone into politics and business respectively. The one in politics, the elder brother, was Shawn Wright.

"Mr. Wright," Scarlett acknowledged politely.

"Chris mentioned you'd started working at Orion's company. What a coincidence to meet you on my first visit," Shawn said as they shook hands. His palm was broad, completely enveloping hers.

The sensation reminded her of Sebastian, whose hands were similarly large, though more fine-boned and pale—the hands of a privileged gentleman.

Shawn's were different: substantial and grounding, conveying a sense of stability.

His pleasant manner and gentle voice drew a genuine smile from Scarlett. "It is quite a coincidence."

After exchanging pleasantries, they turned to business matters.

"Let's continue in my office where it's more spacious," Scarlett suggested, uncomfortable with the crowded space.

No one objected—who wouldn't prefer discussing business comfortably seated on sofas? The entire group relocated to her office.

This was still the preliminary phase of the project, but with political factors involved, the discussions required careful consideration. By the time they concluded, it was already five in the afternoon.

As director, Scarlett personally escorted Shawn's group downstairs.

"Ms. Seymour, you're remarkably accomplished for someone so young," remarked the middle-aged man who had earlier questioned her presence. His eyes now crinkled with warmth that seemed somewhat ingratiating to Scarlett.

"You're fortunate to have caught Mr. Wright's attention," another person commented with a slight smile.

Scarlett laughed softly, looking toward Shawn, who as bureau chief held the highest position among the visitors. "Mr. Wright, you're too kind."

Throughout the day, he had shown her considerable respect, nodding approvingly at all her proposals. Scarlett understood he was extending this courtesy because of Chris.

"I just trust your capabilities," Shawn maintained his gracious tone.

As the group exited the building amid light conversation, they encountered Chris and Dennis approaching.

The two young men were about to call out to Scarlett when they noticed Shawn. They hesitated briefly before stepping forward.

"Shawn," they greeted in unison, with formal respect.

Shawn acknowledged them with a nod. "Not practicing your driving today?"

Chris glanced at Scarlett. "We made dinner plans with Scarlett."

Dennis, not being close to Shawn, simply nodded along with Chris's explanation.

"Is that so?" Shawn tilted his head toward Scarlett.

Though unfamiliar with the Wright family dynamics, Scarlett could tell Chris was lying. As his friend, she naturally played along.

"Yes, we're celebrating my new job," she smiled.

Hearing this, Shawn nodded, his eyes sweeping over the two young men who avoided his gaze. He didn't press the matter. "Alright, don't stay out too late."

After this simple familial admonition, Shawn led his subordinates to their cars.

Only after watching the taillights disappear did Chris exhale deeply, looking like he'd narrowly escaped disaster.

Scarlett found his reaction amusing. "Is Shawn really that intimidating?"

Chris shook his head emphatically. "You don't understand. Shawn is just like my father—a smiling killer!"

He spoke with such conviction that Scarlett assumed he was exaggerating.

"Are we really going to dinner? I need to get my bag from upstairs," she said.

"Let's go together."

"We should invite Orion and make him pay."

Chatting, they headed back inside.

On the right side of the building, just as at noon, a discreet black sedan was parked at the curb.

Mark approached the rear window and spoke quietly, "Ms. Seymour has gone back inside with Mr. Wright and the others."

Sebastian glanced in that direction, then looked away, his tone flat. "Let's go."

The vehicle promptly left the vicinity.

As Scarlett's group waited for the elevator, a few employees from the general office emerged, greeting her enthusiastically before noticing her companions.

"Ms. Seymour, not heading home yet?"

Dennis was Orion's cousin, and Chris was Dennis's close friend. Both were frequent visitors to the MRK Building, so the employees recognized them immediately.

"Mr. Wright, Mr. Wilson," they greeted respectfully.

Chris and Dennis merely nodded, barely glancing at them as they continued their conversation with Scarlett and entered the elevator.

"Scarlett, what would you like for dinner? There's this great place that serves home-style cooking..."

The elevator doors closed, cutting off their voices.

The employees exchanged glances. One sighed, "She must be a wealthy heiress slumming it in the corporate world."

That evening's dinner didn't include Orion, who was currently pursuing a new romantic interest. When informed of their plans, he simply tossed a credit card their way.

"Consider it compensation for my absence."

Scarlett felt somewhat embarrassed, but her two companions had no such qualms. They enjoyed a hearty meal at Dennis's recommended restaurant.

By the time Scarlett returned to her hotel room at nine, it was empty. After her evening routine, she was ready for bed when she noticed a photo on her Instagram feed—one posted with obvious intent to show off.

It was a group photo featuring Sebastian and Edith standing close together.

Edith wore a bright pink evening gown that did her dull complexion no favors, though this wasn't apparent in the heavily edited photo.

Sebastian wore his usual expressionless face—if Edith were cropped out, it could have passed for a business conference memento.

The caption read simply: [Family gathering.]

Scarlett didn't frown, even feeling relieved at not having to attend such events. Reflecting on Sebastian's words earlier that day, she realized he had probably been concerned she might cause a scene after seeing such photos.

Edith rarely posted on social media, so her intent with this post was obvious.

After her confrontation with George, Scarlett had decided to protect herself by keeping her distance from Sebastian.

If she couldn't even handle the Seymour family as an ant beneath their notice, how could she possibly stand against the Howard family?
