Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 202
Growing up as the illegitimate child of the Seymour family, Scarlett had constantly overheard adults talking about men who kept mistresses and fathered children out of wedlock. When adults discussed such matters, their words dripped with disdain, and those contemptuous, disgusted glances would inevitably fall on her.
Because of this, in her mind, only women who remained in their home country during pregnancy were legitimate. Otherwise, the child would be born a bastard.
Sebastian hadn't missed Scarlett's clenched fist, a sign of her nervousness. He took her hand, his touch gentle, but his response was jarringly calm. "No, you'll stay here, then follow Shane to Thalassia later."
Though his tone was meant to be reassuring, it only confirmed Scarlett's suspicions. He was indeed trying to pacify her so she would have the baby.
She instantly became agitated, but with Sebastian right beside her, she couldn't show it. She only withdrew her hand from his grip, her voice low. "When can I go back?"
Still cautiously testing the waters.
However, Sebastian didn't catch her meaning. His brow furrowed slightly, his fingertips brushing against each other as he genuinely considered her question.
Though the situation back home was nearly resolved, George showed no signs of backing down, and Michael's position remained unclear. If they returned now and faced attacks from three sides, even with Teddy's round-the-clock protection, accidents could still happen.
Scarlett's pregnancy was already precarious. If something else happened, it could mean losing both lives, or at the very least, the baby.
His thoughts stopped there. Sebastian's brow remained furrowed as he swiped the key card for the elevator and pressed the button for the fifteenth floor. His voice was steady and emotionless. "Once the baby is born and the paperwork is done, I'll naturally bring you back."
Hearing this, Scarlett felt as if an invisible hand had suddenly gripped her heart. Even her fingertips felt cold.
She slowly raised her eyes to Sebastian's profile, his features hard and unyielding, matching his current attitude. She opened her mouth, wanting to ask something, but the words caught in her throat. She knew asking would only invite more pain, so she lowered her head, her mouth hanging open, her eyes blinking rapidly as she silently sighed.
Silence fell in the elevator. Only the faint mechanical hum of the rising car filled their ears, monotonous and rhythmic, like an invisible thread pulling the tension in the air tighter and tighter.
The elevator reached the fifteenth floor. The doors opened.
The marble floor outside was polished to a mirror shine, but neither of the two people exiting the elevator paid any attention.
"Mr. Howard."
Finn approached from the distance. After a brief exchange of glances with the two guards stationed by the elevator doors, he immediately focused on the couple before him.
"Good. Where is the room?" Sebastian nodded slightly, casually handing the key card to Finn.
"This way, please follow me." Finn took the card, his expression unchanged as he led them toward the hospital room.
Scarlett lagged a step behind. She had been taking in the decor—the fifteenth floor was different from the others. It was lavish, with a subtle fragrance in the air that completely masked the smell of disinfectant.
From appearances alone, you would never connect this place to a hospital. If she hadn't just come up in the hospital elevator, Scarlett might have thought she was back at Hotel Caelstra.
That magnetic card really was a room key for a hospital room.
After swiping the card, they entered a spacious reception area with a floor-to-ceiling window behind the sofa.
Marco and the others were seated there. They stood up to greet the newcomers, but mainly addressed Sebastian.
Shane had little interest in Scarlett. When their eyes met, he merely nodded slightly. "Ms. Seymour."
Scarlett had no good impression of this backstabber, but out of politeness, she nodded back. "Mr. Wright."
Their interaction ended there.
"About that contract..." Shane immediately turned to discuss business with Sebastian.
Scarlett had never been interested in Sebastian's work, especially not when Shane was involved. She had no desire to listen, so she turned to enter the bedroom.
But the tall, blond, middle-aged man called out to her. "Ms. Seymour!"
Scarlett hadn't expected this foreigner to speak English so well. Slightly surprised, she turned back and sincerely remarked, "Your English is excellent."
Pleased by Scarlett's compliment, Marco smiled even more warmly. He tilted his head slightly in acknowledgment.
"If there's anything you find uncomfortable about your stay, you can tell me. I'll take care of everything." He extended his hand to shake Scarlett's.
Scarlett didn't respond immediately. After shaking hands and withdrawing hers, her gaze fell on his eyes. She was struck by how similar they were to Sebastian's, but she didn't mention it. She simply thanked him softly. "Thank you, Mr...."
She hesitated, unsure how to address him.
"Marco Russo," he promptly supplied, understanding her dilemma.
Scarlett noted the name. She had no particular interest in this foreign man, assuming he was someone Sebastian had brought to monitor her, just like Teddy. Because of this, she remained wary of Marco.
"Ms. Seymour, I know Sebastian is..." But Marco seemed oblivious to Scarlett's caution and continued chatting with her.
However, his conversation didn't last long. Marco had barely begun when someone approached. "Mr. Russo, we should go now."
The sudden voice startled Scarlett. She quickly turned to see Shane. He hadn't realized he'd frightened her and continued speaking to Marco. "Mr. Russo, the car has arrived. Whatever you want to tell Ms. Seymour can wait until we return."
Marco nodded, glancing toward the door. Only then did he notice Sebastian was no longer in the room. He raised an eyebrow. "Where's Sebastian?"
"He went to take a call."
Shane answered, then turned and headed toward the door first.
"This kid, leaving without saying a word? No wonder he can't catch a girl." A comment in Seraphine suddenly reached Scarlett's ears.
She immediately looked over, confusion in her eyes as she hadn't understood.
But Marco had no time to explain to Scarlett. He smiled kindly at her. "Ms. Seymour, we'll talk more later. I'll leave some men here. If you need anything, just tell them—they speak English."
He had noticed Scarlett's confusion when he spoke Seraphine and guessed her foreign language skills weren't very good, so he thoughtfully added this reminder.
Hearing this, Scarlett instinctively glanced at the bodyguards sitting on the sofa and nodded in agreement.
