Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 243

The caregiver's warning didn't catch Adeline's attention. Though she didn't move closer, she remained standing by the lake, refusing to leave.

Adeline was certain the man she'd just seen was Michael, and he definitely seemed to be wearing hospital clothing.

But how could Michael possibly be in Eldoria's psychiatric hospital?

At first, Adeline thought she'd been seeing things.

It wasn't until she returned to the main building that Adeline spotted the psychiatric hospital's entrance from her room window.

The rehabilitation center and psychiatric hospital were built practically side by side, sharing the same plot of land split down the middle.

The room Adeline was staying in was in the main building's dormitory section. Being close to the entrance and positioned at just the right angle, she had a clear view of the psychiatric hospital's gate.

A black SUV was parked outside the psychiatric hospital right now. The distance was too great for her to make out the license plate.

However, not all the details were unclear.

A man stepped out of the vehicle and stood respectfully by the entrance, waiting.

Someone emerged from the main gate, and the person waiting immediately approached them.

Adeline craned her neck, trying to uncover more truth about what was happening from this vantage point.

After several attempts, Adeline finally managed to see more.

Michael was among the group at the gate.

The person who'd gotten out of the car was Mark. As for who could command Mark's complete respect, there was only one possibility.

Adeline watched that tall figure, already certain of his identity—Sebastian.

But this only brought more confusion. Why would he and Michael be here? And why was Michael wearing hospital clothes?

No one was around to answer these questions.

Down at the psychiatric hospital entrance, Sebastian had finished speaking with Michael, and the two said their goodbyes.

After getting in the car, the vehicle made a U-turn at the intersection ahead. As they passed the rehabilitation center, Mark instinctively glanced over.

Then he looked in the rearview mirror, studying Sebastian's expression before finally speaking. "Mr. Howard, aren't you worried Ms. Morgan might see something?"

The two hospitals were so close together, and Michael would be staying here for about six months. There was no telling when Adeline might spot him, and when that happened, the lie about Michael recovering abroad would completely fall apart.

Hearing this, Sebastian remained calm, his fingers lightly tapping the armrest.

"So what if she sees?"

This rhetorical question immediately put Mark at ease. Right—even if she found out, Adeline had no way to tell the outside world.

Her connections to the outside were almost completely severed. She was limited to making just one phone call per day.

Under these circumstances, it would be nearly impossible for Adeline to spread word about what she'd witnessed.

...

Calvessa, Vesperia, Hotel Caelstra.

On a beautifully sunny afternoon, Benjamin was in an unusually good mood, setting out afternoon tea by the floor-to-ceiling windows in his study.

Kevin wasn't present.

Only his phone sat on the nearby coffee table, speaker turned on.

"So you're saying Mr. Cooper just wants me to know about my background?" Scarlett's voice through the phone carried a hint of confusion, as if such a simple motive seemed fragile as a soap bubble.

Benjamin nodded, taking a sip of his tea, his voice unusually relaxed. "Of course. I'm well aware of the torture you'd face if your identity were exposed."

Pain and helplessness flickered in his eyes as he spoke.

"Besides, even if I did expose your identity, those people wouldn't stop their siege against me."

This statement struck Scarlett as odd, prompting her to ask immediately, "Why not?"

"Because of evidence, Ms. Seymour," Benjamin spoke cheerfully, holding a cookie and gently waving it. "You have to understand—once their siege against me begins, I'll be surrounded by evidence of every crime they've committed against me."

Hearing this, Scarlett's heart clenched, as if she could already foresee the consequences of her exposure.

Benjamin's words didn't stop despite her discomfort.

"What's more, they never let anyone who opposes them go free." Benjamin bit down hard on the cookie, hatred in his eyes, but he bit so forcefully that he cut his teeth and drew blood.

He frowned, quickly setting down the cookie and listening slowly to the voice on the other end.

"Who exactly are they?"

This was Scarlett's biggest concern.

In the current situation, while she was hidden in the shadows, so were they. She couldn't even be sure if they'd infiltrated her current residence.

Benjamin wasn't surprised by this question at all.

His tone remained natural as he sighed softly. "Them? There are far too many of them."

This answer caught Scarlett off guard—she hadn't expected such a response.

Too many people?

Could this involve more than just one organization or faction?

"You know about Eldoria's Jewish community?" Benjamin deliberately lowered his voice when he reached this point.

Of course, Scarlett knew, so she responded affirmatively.

"They're a pack of hyenas who'll gnaw on any piece of meat they find. They're the ones who've been eyeing Mr. Seymour's inheritance all these years."

Benjamin made no effort to hide his displeasure with the Jewish community.

Scarlett blinked, never having imagined she'd be facing an entire ethnic group in this matter.

But soon, Benjamin's explanation completely shattered any remaining hope she might have harbored.

"Eldoria's Jewish community doesn't just refer to Jewish people." Benjamin pursed his lips, taking a deep breath before exhaling heavily. "There are also businessmen and politicians who'll sell themselves out for a few scraps, offering their services to those Jews."

Though Scarlett wasn't clear on the specifics of what might happen, she quickly understood that to survive, her background had to remain completely hidden.

This was also the first time she felt genuinely grateful for Sebastian's overprotectiveness.

Thinking of Teddy and the others stationed around the house, Scarlett felt secure.

"There are many useful things in the bank's safety deposit box, but too many people are watching that place. There's no way I could retrieve them."

Benjamin sighed helplessly.

Though Scarlett was curious about what was inside, Benjamin's words made it clear that those items were a hot potato—trying to retrieve them could very well mean death.

Her curiosity quickly faded.

"But Mr. Cooper, how did you know I was Mr. Wesley Seymour's descendant?"

In all the time since learning about her background, Scarlett had never gotten a paternity test. Everyone who'd mentioned this seemed to have already accepted her as Wesley's descendant.

"You look too much like him." Benjamin sighed softly, leaning back slightly as he recalled a photograph he'd seen in his youth.

That Lumaria man had been devastatingly beautiful.
