Let Me Go, Mr. Howard Chapter 37
Early the next morning.
Scarlett was awakened by the sound of Sebastian getting up. She lifted her head from beneath the covers, saw Sebastian standing by the bed getting dressed, then closed her eyes and flopped back down, silently cursing her bad luck.
Sebastian, oblivious to her thoughts, saw she was about to go back to sleep and bent down to touch her cheek with the back of his hand. "Not going to work?"
Scarlett ground her back teeth. What work? She was just running errands for Edith! Sebastian really couldn't stand to see her have any peace.
Though she was cursing internally, she replied, "Yes, I'm getting up now."
"I'll drive you." Sebastian was already fully dressed. Seeing that Scarlett was getting up, he sat in the nearby armchair to wait.
They'd been in this situation before—after spending the night together, they would go to the office together. But to avoid complications, Scarlett would always get out a short distance from the company.
"No need," Scarlett immediately refused. "I'm not as precious as you. The bus is good enough for me." The formal language and archaic phrasing were pure sarcasm.
Sebastian frowned, staring at Scarlett, but she didn't even give him a glance as she got out of bed and disappeared into the bathroom.
When Scarlett emerged, Sebastian was no longer in the room. Though this was what she had wanted, seeing the empty room still left her feeling somewhat dejected.
There was a bus stop across from the hotel. When Scarlett arrived near the company on the bus, she happened to see Sebastian's car turning into the underground garage.
Through the lowered window, she clearly saw Edith's face. She was smiling broadly and artificially, and Sebastian was driving.
Watching this, Scarlett felt a flicker of understanding. So that's why Sebastian had suddenly left—to pick up Edith.
At the company, Edith and Sebastian emerged from the elevator together. People passing by the entrance bowed slightly. "Mr. Howard, Ms. Seymour."
Although the marriage alliance between the Seymour and Howard families had been confirmed, with Edith chosen as the bride, they weren't actually married yet. So no matter how much Edith acted as Sebastian's wife, others would only address her as "Ms. Seymour."
Edith pressed her lips together, dissatisfied with being called "Ms. Seymour," but seeing the envious glances directed her way, she felt smug again.
"Hello, everyone," she said, always mindful of her public image, smiling warmly.
Sebastian escorted Edith to her office door and, completely ignoring her attempts to make him stay, checked the time on his watch. "I have matters to attend to," he said flatly.
Edith pressed her lips together, somewhat displeased. "It's Wednesday. Surely you're not that busy?"
Sebastian didn't respond, just looked at her. At this point, Edith would have been a fool to insist further. She could only smile and say, "I wasn't thinking. Go ahead with your work."
Watching Sebastian leave, Edith's lips were pressed together, clearly unhappy. But the surrounding employees quickly gathered around her.
"Ms. Seymour, truly worthy of being the future CEO's wife! Mr. Howard drove you in today, didn't he?"
Edith immediately brightened, her pride mixed with showing off. "Of course. I merely mentioned that my car was broken, and he immediately came to pick me up."
"Wow! Indeed, only Ms. Seymour could receive such treatment!"
"Exactly! There was a lady before, supposedly from a family with long-standing ties to the Howards, who never received such treatment!"
Meanwhile, Scarlett followed the crowd into the elevator. Being beautiful and a recent subject of office gossip, she couldn't help but notice people glancing at her.
Though there was no ill intent in their gazes, the way they stared at her like some curiosity made Scarlett press her lips together uncomfortably.
The design department was on the seventeenth floor. She had barely managed to endure until the elevator doors opened when she encountered Edith.
"Well, if it isn't Scarlett! Why so disheveled?" Edith held a fruit tea, her smile exaggerated and cutting.
Scarlett looked down to straighten her rumpled clothes, then glanced up at Edith without responding.
But Edith wouldn't let her off so easily. "Oh, I forgot—your circumstances have changed."
Previously, Scarlett had been the design department manager. Now, with someone else in that position and Scarlett demoted, she naturally couldn't use the management elevator anymore.
"Yes, I can't compare to you, Ms. Seymour," Scarlett said with a slight snort, thinking of the scene she had witnessed earlier.
Edith raised an eyebrow, looking Scarlett up and down. "By the way, there's a gathering at home tonight. Scarlett, make sure you dress appropriately. We wouldn't want people gossiping."
Her words and gesture clearly implied that Scarlett's current outfit was inappropriate. The people beside Edith immediately looked at Scarlett's attire. It was just a standard business suit, but Scarlett's figure was so good that it appeared somewhat provocative.
Scarlett flipped her hair. "I'm busy."
Edith's face darkened, but mindful of those around her, she could only smile sweetly and hint, "Is that so? Dad mentioned he wanted to give you something."
Hearing this, Scarlett immediately looked at her. There was only one thing she cared about that David had—the jewels her mother had left behind.
Even knowing this was merely a threat, Scarlett could only force a smile. "Fine, I understand."
Edith snorted, having delivered her message, and turned to leave.
Scarlett had barely sat down at her desk when she received a message on her phone from Sebastian: [Where are you?]
Expressionless, Scarlett took a photo of her workstation and replied, [What can I do for you, Mr. Howard?]
There was no further response. Scarlett refreshed a few times, then tossed her phone aside and picked up the proposal she had received that morning.
Though no longer the manager, she was still doing a manager's work. As for Edith, she was a manager in name only.
The staff had quickly realized after a few days under Edith that she was a pampered young lady who knew nothing, so they had started bringing their work to Scarlett for review.
After work, Scarlett took a taxi to the Seymour Villa, which meant Mark arrived at her office only to find it empty. He only saw Tom organizing files in the office. "Where is Ms. Seymour?"
Tom glanced at him. "She left."
Mark nodded, texting as he walked out. When Sebastian received the message, Edith tried to look, but he moved away.
After reading it, Sebastian put his phone away, his expression unchanged.
Edith pressed her lips together. "Who was that?"
"Mark," Sebastian replied.
"What did he say?" Edith persisted.
At this, Sebastian fell silent and looked at her, causing her to immediately back down.
When Scarlett arrived at the Seymour Villa, she got out of the car and spotted Chris. Surprised, she called out, "Chris?"
The man ahead heard her voice and turned around. Seeing Scarlett, he smiled immediately. "Scarlett! I was just worried about not knowing anyone here."
As he spoke, he turned and walked toward Scarlett, and they stood side by side. Behind Scarlett, Sebastian's car arrived.
Chris glanced back at Sebastian and Edith getting out of the car. "After all, some people are better not knowing."
